Context: The growth of osteopathic medicine in the United States has led to a vibrant expansion of the profession internationally. Canadian students represent the majority of international applicants and matriculants to US colleges of osteopathic medicine (COMs); however, to our knowledge, no studies have explored this population.

Objective: To gain a better understanding of Canadian students attending US colleges of osteopathic medicine by examining their residency training preference, visa preference, intent to practice in the United States or Canada, receptiveness to incorporating osteopathic manipulative medicine into practice, specialty preference, estimated debt incurred, and effect of debt on specialty choice.

Background: Doctors of osteopathic medicine (DO) are one of the fastest growing segments of health care professionals in the United States. Although Canada has taken significant leaps in the acknowledgment of US trained DOs, there continues to be a lack of understanding of the profession by Canadian trained physicians. In this article, we provide a brief overview of osteopathic medical education and training in the United States.

Use of composite restorations continues to increase, tempered by more potential problems when placed in posterior dentition. Thus, it is essential to understand how these materials function under stress-bearing clinical conditions. Because mastication is difficult to replicate in the laboratory, cyclic loading is frequently used within in vitro evaluations but often employs traditional fatigue testing, which typically does not simulate occlusal loading because higher stresses and loading frequencies are used, so failure mechanisms may be different.

Classical trajectory calculations using the MERCURY/VENUS code have been carried out on the H+O(2) reactive system using the DMBE-IV potential energy surface. The vibrational quantum number and the temperature were selected over the ranges nu=0 to 15, and T=300 to 10 000 K, respectively. All other variables were averaged.

Well-rounded instruction in occupational medicine as part of family medicine residency training is feasible through a program that balances a longitudinal curriculum of monthly occupational and environmental medicine (OEM) lectures, community-based OEM patient care, and worksite assessment. Such training would help equip family medicine residents to integrate occupational medicine into their practices, which, in light of a shortage of board-certified practitioners in OEM, would help fill community needs. The Intern-Resident Training Committee of Carson City Hospital in rural Michigan established both learner and institutional goals and objectives for such a program of instruction.

Objective: To assess whether weight cycling has adverse effects on blood lipids or blood pressure.

Design: Cohort study, six years of follow-up, comparing net change in blood lipids and blood pressure among weight cyclers and non-cyclers.

Subjects: Men (n = 4353), age 35-57 y, at high risk for heart disease because of smoking, high blood pressure, and elevated cholesterol concentration in the Multiple Risk Factor Intervention Trial (MRFIT)--a 22-site, multi-center collaborative primary prevention trial conducted in the US, 1973-1983.

This study was performed to determine if a simulated legal deposition increases emergency medicine (EM) residents' knowledge, self-confidence, and understanding of a legal deposition. This prospective study included a convenience sample of EM 1-3 residents. A knowledge and a self-assessment pretest were given, followed by a didactic session moderated by local attorneys, followed by knowledge and a self-assessment posttest.

The studies reported here were directed toward ascertaining in a variety of organisms whether or not any of the three lobes of the pituitary gland affected thyroid activity. We documented a thyroid stimulating action of the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland extract that was not shared in by either the intermediate or posterior lobes. Pilocarpine first depressed the stimulating action of the pituitary extract but, after the fifth injection, it accentuated the response of the thyroid gland to the pituitary extract.

In a prospective study using a cutoff value of 140 pg/mL, serum estradiol 17-beta assay had a sensitivity of 83% and a specificity of 100% in differentiating ectopic pregnancy (6 patients) from normal pregnancy with threatened abortion proceeding to viability (7 patients). In differentiating threatened abortion from spontaneous abortion (9 patients), the estradiol assay had a sensitivity of 88.9% and a specificity of 100%.

Delirium tremens was first identified as being due to long-term excessive alcohol intake in 1813, but is now known to be associated with abrupt withdrawal of alcohol in chronically habituated persons. Recent publications quote an anticipated mortality rate of 15% to 20%. Our experience in the past 20 years has not confirmed that rate.

Gender and dietary saturated fat remain two strong predictors of coronary heart disease susceptibility. In a retrospective meta-analysis of five studies, we analyzed the impact of gender and diet composition on lipoprotein change, or 'response' (delta) in 63 normolipidemic subjects fed two contrasting, metabolically controlled diets. One diet had a low polyunsaturated to saturated fatty acid ratio (low P:S) and the second, a high P:S ratio in a crossover design.

Most of the medical care expenses paid by an entire company are generated by a small percentage of employees. The most expensive employee may have costs 100 to 500 times as much as the typical employee. Instead of comparing average costs, it makes sense to investigate whether employees with unhealthy behaviors are more prone to extreme costs.

The costs associated with health risks have become a primary focus in the field of health promotion. Unfortunately, the nature and quality of medical cost data are not ideal for simple comparisons of health risk groups. Most health promotion professionals have had little or no training on how to interpret cost data and are thus unaware of the limitations and problems inherent in cost comparisons.

Bilateral destruction of the rat ventromedial hypothalamus (VMH) produces a syndrome characterized by hyperphagia and obesity. In the present study we examined whether grafts of fetal hypothalamus could reverse the effects of this lesion. Three groups of adult rats received bilateral electrolytic lesions of the VMH.
