The adsorption of the radical α,ɣ-bisdiphenylene-β-phenylallyl (BDPA) molecule to the Cu(100) surface was studied using scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM), scanning tunnelling spectroscopy (STS), and density functional theory (DFT) calculations accounting for dispersion forces. BDPA on Cu(100) was observed to align preferentially along directions due to weak Cu-C chemisorption between fluorenyl carbons with the underlying copper atoms. The curved shape of the BDPA molecule on Cu(100) can be ascribed to the lack of molecular orbital character on the phenyl substituent.

However, realizations of such great potential are stymied by perturbations, such as temperature and local fields imposed by impurities and defects, that can render a promising quantum state uncontrollable. Here, we report room-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy observation of interaction between Rashba states and topological surface states, which manifests local electronic structure along step edges controllable by the layer thickness of thin films.

This multicentre, open-label study investigated safety, tolerability, and efficacy of long-term weekly prophylactic marstacimab treatment in participants with severe haemophilia A and B, with or without inhibitors. Adult participants were enrolled from a previous phase Ib/II study or de novo and assigned to one of two subcutaneous (SC) marstacimab doses: once-weekly 300 mg or a 300-mg loading dose followed by once-weekly 150-mg doses, for up to 365 days.

For HPB, which forms non-covalent 2D monolayers at room temperature, a thermally induced transition of the monolayer's structure could be achieved by moderate annealing, which is likely driven by π-bond formation. It is found that the dibrominated carbon positions of TPTP do not guide the coupling if the growth occurs on a substrate at temperatures that are sufficient to initiate C-H bond activation.

The laterally extended chevron GNRs grown on Au(111) exhibit a bandgap of about 2.2 eV, which is considerably smaller than the values reported for chevron GNRs in similar studies.

The ink synthesis is based on a simple wet chemical reaction and the inkjet printing protocol is a facile step by step method. The inkjet printed thin films have been characterized by X-ray diffraction, optical absorption spectroscopy, photoluminescent spectroscopy, and electronic transport measurements.

The crystal structure and bonding environment are consistent with CsPbBr perovskite quantum dots. The current-voltage (I-V) and capacitance-voltage (C-V) transport measurements indicate that the photo-carrier drift lifetime can exceed 1 ms for some printed perovskite films.

Aquatic risk from chemical mixtures in an agricultural landscape was evaluated prospectively in 2 exposure scenario case studies: at field scale for a program of 13 plant-protection products applied annually for 20 yr and at a watershed scale for a mixed land-use scenario over 30 yr with 12 plant-protection products and 2 veterinary pharmaceuticals used for beef cattle. Risk quotients were calculated from regulatory exposure models with typical real-world use patterns and regulatory acceptable concentrations for individual chemicals.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFAtomically precise graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) of two types, chevron GNRs and N = 7 straight armchair GNRs (7-AGNRs), have been synthesized through a direct contact transfer (DCT) of molecular precursors on Au(111) and gradual annealing. This method provides an alternative to the conventional approach for the deposition of molecules on surfaces by sublimation and simplifies preparation of dense monolayer films of GNRs. The DCT method allows deposition of molecules on a surface in their original state and then studying their gradual transformation to polymers to GNRs by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) upon annealing.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFAtomically precise chevron graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) have been synthesized on Cu(111) substrates by the surface-assisted coupling of 6,11-dibromo-1,2,3,4-tetraphenyltriphenylene (CBrH) and thermal cyclodehydrogenation of the resulting polymer. The GNRs form on Cu(111) epitaxially along the 〈112〉 crystallographic directions, which was found to be in agreement with the computational results, and at lower temperatures than on Au(111). This work demonstrates that the substrate plays an important role in the on-surface synthesis of GNRs and can result in new assembly modes of GNR structures.

While there is great interest in incorporating symptomatology, little is known about how patient reported symptoms are associated with future exacerbations and exacerbation-related costs.
Methods: The mMRC and CAT were mailed to a randomly selected sample of 4,000 Medicare members aged >40 years, diagnosed with COPD (≥2 encounters with International Classification of Dis eases-9th Edition Clinical Modification: 491.
Titanium trisulfide (TiS3) is a promising layered semiconductor material. Several-mm-long TiS3 whiskers can be conveniently grown by the direct reaction of titanium and sulfur. In this study, we exfoliated these whiskers using the adhesive tape approach and fabricated few-layered TiS3 field-effect transistors (FETs).

Despite its simplicity, widespread use in recent trials and overall prognostic value, the 6-MWD has often been criticized over the past several years and pleas from several PAH experts have emerged from the literature to find alternative endpoints that would be more reliable in reflecting the pulmonary vascular resistance as well as cardiac status in PAH and their response to therapy. A meeting of PAH experts and representatives from regulatory agencies and pharmaceutical companies was convened in early 2012 to discuss the validity of current as well as emerging valuable endpoints.

Background/aim: There are few data regarding insulin levels in the lungs during diabetes therapy with inhaled insulin. We examined the disposition of inhaled human insulin (Exubera(®) [EXU] human insulin [recombinant DNA origin], Pfizer, New York, NY) in the lungs by measuring trough insulin levels in bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid after 12 weeks of EXU treatment.
Methods: After a 4-week run-in period of subcutaneous insulin therapy, 24 subjects with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) and 26 with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) continued their basal insulin regimen and received premeal subcutaneous (SC) insulin for 13 weeks, followed by 12 weeks of premeal EXU.

The purpose of this phase 2, multicentre, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, 12-week dose-ranging study was to assess the efficacy, safety, and tolerability of the dipeptidyl peptidase-IV (DPP-IV) inhibitor PF-734200 in adult subjects with type 2 diabetes who were on a stable dose of metformin. Men and women with inadequate glycaemic control with metformin as their sole diabetes medication were randomized to placebo or PF-734200 2 mg, 5 mg, 10 mg, or 20 mg every day. A population subset underwent mixed meal tolerance tests (MMTT) at baseline and week 12.

Here we describe a method for enzymatically isolating human cells from fungiform papillae obtained by biopsy and maintaining them in culture for more than 7 passages (7 months) without loss of viability and while retaining many of the functional properties of acutely isolated taste cells. Cells in these cultures exhibited increases in intracellular calcium when stimulated with perceptually appropriate concentrations of several taste stimuli, indicating that at least some of the native signaling pathways were present.

Background: In gnathostomes, chemosensory receptors (CR) expressed in olfactory epithelia are encoded by evolutionarily dynamic gene families encoding odorant receptors (OR), trace amine-associated receptors (TAAR), V1Rs and V2Rs. A limited number of OR-like sequences have been found in invertebrate chordate genomes. Whether these gene families arose in basal or advanced vertebrates has not been resolved because these families have not been examined systematically in agnathan genomes.
