Plasma glucose and insulin responses to oral glucose and insulin sensitivity by the euglycemic hyperinsulinemic clamp technique were investigated in 30 cystic fibrosis patients with normal fasting blood glucose levels and normal (N = 12), impaired (N = 12) or diabetic (N = 6) glucose tolerance, and in 12 control subjects. In a subgroup of 10 cystic fibrosis patients with non-diabetic glucose tolerance both oral glucose tolerance test and clamp were performed again 48-52 months later. Following oral glucose, glycemic responses were higher in cystic fibrosis patients than in controls, whereas insulin responses were reduced significantly only in the patients with diabetic glucose tolerance.

The effects of different extracellular Na+ and Ca2+ concentrations on histamine release from human basophils were investigated. Isosmotic replacement of extracellular Na+ either with choline+, a non-permeant Na+ analogue, or glucose significantly increased spontaneous and anti-IgE-induced histamine release. Basophils from 12 of 49 normal subjects, which were found not to release histamine upon challenge with an optimal dose of anti-IgE in a 135 mM NaCl buffer, were converted into releasing basophils when stimulation with anti-IgE was performed in a low-Na+ medium.

In this study we evaluated the release of some mediators of inflammatory reactions such as histamine (H), leukotriene B4 (LTB4), leukotriene C4 (LTC4) and prostaglandin D2 (PGD2) in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of 15 patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), eight with opportunistic infections of the central nervous system (CNS) and seven without HIV-related neurological pathology, and of 25 HIV-negative control subjects with other neurological diseases. The cerebrospinal LTB4 level was increased in all the AIDS patients (mean 348 pg/ml); the control group revealed normal levels of LTB4 in the CSF (mean 63.2 pg/ml).

Our study was intended to verify the efficacy and the side effects of intraluminal dilatation of the distal urinary tract with vascular balloon catheter in a group of patients with urethral stenosis. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the release of some potential mediators of allergic reactions, such as histamine, peptide leukotrienes (LTs), LTB4 and prostaglandin D2 (PGD2), in bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluids from 11 patients with respiratory allergy (eight with bronchial asthma and three with allergic rhinitis), who underwent specific endobronchial challenge. Histamine, peptide LT, and PGD2 levels in BAL fluids increased significantly after antigen stimulation both in patients with asthma and in patients with rhinitis. By contrast, LTB4 concentration was always below the limits of detection of the radioimmunoassay.
