In structured populations, the ecology of games may vary over neighborhoods. The effect of the ecological variations on population dynamics remains largely unknown. We here incorporate the ecological variations into the set-structured populations to explore the coevolutionary dynamics of the ecology and cooperation.

Identifying and Exploring the Impact Factors for Intraocular Pressure Prediction in Myopic Children with Atropine Control Utilizing Multivariate Adaptive Regression Splines.

Purpose: The treatment of childhood myopia often involves the use of topical atropine, which has been demonstrated to be effective in decelerating the progression of myopia. It is crucial to monitor intraocular pressure (IOP) to ensure the safety of topical atropine. This study aims to identify the optimal machine learning IOP-monitoring module and establish a precise baseline IOP as a clinical safety reference for atropine medication.

Relevance of genotype and clinical factors to risk for antituberculosis drug-induced liver injury.

The study analyzes the risk factors associated with antituberculosis drug-induced liver injury (ATB-DILI), and the relationship between ATB-DILI and gene polymorphisms. Out of the 324 included patients, 57 (17.59%) developed ATB-DILI.

N-acetyltransferase 2 genetic polymorphisms and anti-tuberculosis-drug-induced liver injury: a correlation study.

Considering the genetic characteristics of people with anti-tuberculosis (TB)-drug-induced liver injury (ATDILI), genetic factors and their consequences for treatment need to be studied. The correlation between N-acetyltransferase 2 (NAT2) genetic polymorphisms and ATDILI was analysed. In this study, the liver and coagulation functions of 120 patients with TB were monitored dynamically for at least 3 months.

Application of Nanosecond Pulsed Electric Field and Autofluorescence Lifetime Microscopy of FAD in Lung Cells.

Exposure of nanosecond pulsed electric fields (nsPEFs) to live cells is an increasing research interest in biology and medicine. Despite extensive studies, a question still remains as to how effects of application of nsPEF on intracellular functions are different between cancerous cells and normal cells and how the difference can be detected. Herein, we have presented an approach of autofluorescence lifetime (AFL) microscopy of flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD) to detect effects of application of nsPEF having 50 ns of a pulse width, nsPEF(50), on intracellular function in lung cancerous cells, A549 and H661, which show nsPEF(50)-induced apoptosis, and normal cells, MRC-5, in which the field effect is less or not induced.

Dynamics of immune responses are inconsistent when trauma patients are grouped by injury severity score and clinical outcomes.

The injury severity score (ISS) is used in daily practice to evaluate the severity of trauma patients; however, the score is not always consistent with the prognosis. After injury, systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) and compensatory anti-inflammatory response syndrome (CARS) are related to the prognosis of trauma patients. We aimed to evaluate the associations between the immune response and prognosis in trauma patients.

Evolutionary dynamics under partner preferences.

The fact that people often have preference rankings for their partners is a distinctive aspect of human behavior. Little is known, however, about how this talent as a powerful force shapes human behavioral traits, including those which should not have been favored by selection, such as cooperation in social dilemma situations. Here we propose a dynamic model in which network-structured individuals can switch their interaction partners within neighborhoods based on their preferences.

Gross Total Resection Promotes Subsequent Recovery and Further Enhancement of Impaired Natural Killer Cell Activity in Glioblastoma Patients.

Glioblastoma is the most common primary malignant brain tumor, and median survival is relatively short despite aggressive standard treatment. Natural killer (NK) cell dysfunction is strongly associated with tumor recurrence and metastasis but is unclear in glioblastoma. NK activity (NKA) represents NK cell-secreted interferon-γ (IFN-γ), which modulates immunity and inhibits cancer progression.

Methods: 1869 patients with type 2 diabetes were followed-up for a median of 9.5 years in a Diabetes Shared Care Program.

Evolutionary dynamics of zero-determinant strategies in repeated multiplayer games.

Several studies have confirmed the existence of zero-determinant (ZD) strategies in repeated social dilemmas since Press and Dyson's ingenious discovery of ZD strategies in iterated prisoner's dilemmas. However, less research studies evolutionary performance of multiplayer ZD strategies, especially from a theoretical perspective. Here, we use a state-clustering method to theoretically analyze evolutionary dynamics of two representative ZD strategies: generous ZD strategies and extortionate ZD strategies.

The role of growth hormone and IGF-1 in retinopathy: a prospective study of retinopathy in patients with acromegaly and impaired fasting glucose.

Aims: To investigate the effects of the growth hormone (GH)/insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) axis on the incidence and progression of retinopathy.

Methods: We enrolled 91 patients with acromegaly and 123 subjects with impaired fasting glucose (IFG) between 2008 and 2016 to examine the incidence and prevalence of retinopathy. Patients attended follow-ups in our clinics and underwent examinations according to the national guidelines for diabetes management.

Dynamics of cellular immune responses in recipients of renal allografts positive for hepatitis B surface antigen.

Background/purpose: Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg)-positive renal transplantation recipients must take lifelong immunosuppressants and nucleotide analogues (NAs). We investigated the cellular immune responses of HBsAg-positive renal transplantation recipients taking immunosuppressants and NAs.

Methods: Blood samples were collected from HBsAg-positive individuals with end-stage renal disease on the transplant waiting list (Group 1) and renal transplantation recipients taking immunosuppressants and NAs (Group 2) or immunosuppressants without NAs (Group 3).

Metronidazole-Induced Irreversible Optic Neuropathy.

Metronidazole-induced optic neuropathy is a rare complication. Most patients have excellent visual recovery. In this study, we report a patient who presented with a sudden onset of severe visual loss after a 1-week course of metronidazole.

Roles of autophagy in orthodontic tooth movement.

Introduction: Orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) relies on efficient remodeling of alveolar bone. While a well-controlled inflammatory response is essential during OTM, the mechanism regulating inflammation is unknown. Autophagy, a conserved catabolic pathway, has been shown to protect cells from excess inflammation in disease states.

Our research aims to analyze clinical data by using machine learning models to evaluate the effect of 19 important factors on intraocular pressure (IOP) in children with myopia treated with topical atropine.

A STROBE-compliant case-control study: Effects of cumulative doses of topical atropine on intraocular pressure and myopia progression.

Topical atropine has become a mainstream treatment of myopia throughout East and Southeast Asia, but it is uncertain whether long-term topical atropine therapy induces intraocular pressure (IOP) elevation and subsequent development of glaucoma. We then prospectively examined the effects of long-term atropine treatment on IOP.Our case series collected 186 myopic children who were younger than 16 years of age.

Dual activatable self-assembled nanotheranostics for bioimaging and photodynamic therapy.

Multifunctional nanosystems that can transport therapeutic and diagnostic agents into tumor sites and activate their respective functions via tumor-microenvironment recognition are highly desirable for clinical applications. We fabricated pH and redox dual-activatable self-assembled nanotheranostics (named as DA-SNs) via coordination-driven self-assembly of chlorin e6 (Ce6) disulfide-linked pH sensitive polymer ligand, poly (isobutylene-alt-maleic anhydride-graft-methoxy-poly (ethyleneglycol)-graft-imidazole-graft-Cystamine-Ce6) [PIMA-mPEG-API-SS-Ce6], and gadolinium ions (Gd). DA-SNs exhibited uniform particle size of ~48 nm, excellent stability, and inherent biosafety.

Hierarchical tumor acidity-responsive self-assembled magnetic nanotheranostics for bimodal bioimaging and photodynamic therapy.

Nanosized self-assemblies built from inorganic nanoparticles and polymer ligands have the potential to generate personalized theranostics systems for diagnostic imaging and cancer therapy. However, most of the theranostics systems suffer from poor targeting activity, insensitive diagnosis and drug leakage, leading to poor treatment results. In this study, a hierarchical tumor acidity-responsive magnetic nanobomb (termed HTAMN) was developed for photodynamic therapy and diagnostic imaging.

Rate of psychiatric disorders and associations with quality of life among community members following the Kaohsiung gas explosion: an 18-month cross-sectional follow-up study.

Objective: To conduct a follow-up on the rate and related risk factors of probable disaster-related psychiatric disorders such as depressive disorder (major depressive episode, MDE), stress disorders, post-traumatic (posttraumatic stress disorder, PTSD), and the quality of life of the survivors of a fossil gas explosion in Taiwan 18 months after the event.

Methods: A community-based survey of residents of a community that experienced a petrochemical gas explosion with cross-sectional assessments was conducted 18 months after the event. Two screening tools, including the Disaster-Related Psychological Screening Test (DRPST) and Short Form 12v2 (SF-12v2), were used to survey a representative sample of 388 participants.

Phenotype affinity mediated interactions can facilitate the evolution of cooperation.

We study the coevolutionary dynamics of the diversity of phenotype and the evolution of cooperation in the Prisoner's Dilemma. Rather than pre-assigning zero-or-one interaction rate, we diversify the rate of interaction by associating it with phenotypes. Individuals each carry a set of potentially expressible traits and expresses a number of such traits at a cost proportional to the number.

Evolution of joint cooperation under phenotypic variations.

Effects of phenotypic variation on the species-environment systems and the evolution of cooperation under prescribed phenotypic diversity have been well addressed respectively. Interspecies interactions in the context of evolvable phenotypic diversity remain largely unconsidered. We address the evolutionary dynamics by considering evolvable phenotypic variations under group interactions.
