Background: Patients who undergo pediatric living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) sometimes develop graft fibrosis. Recently, Mac-2 binding protein glycosylation-modified isomer (M2BPGi) was developed as a new marker of hepatic fibrosis progression. We performed this study to examine the relationship between serum M2BPGi levels and liver histologic findings in patients after LDLT for biliary atresia.

The COL4A1 (collagen Type 4 alpha1) pathogenic variant is associated with porencephaly and schizencephaly and accounts for approximately 20% of these patients. This gene variant leads to systemic microvasculopathy, which manifests as brain, ocular, renal, and muscular disorders. However, only a few patients with surgical interventions have been reported and the potential surgical risks are unknown.

Background: The appropriate timing of liver transplantation (LT) in patients with biliary atresia (BA) who survived with their native livers until adolescence remains controversial. The liver-spleen volume ratio (LSR) has been reported to be efficacious in predicting the prognosis of chronic liver disease. We investigated whether LSR could predict long-term native liver prognosis and serve as an indication for LT in patients with BA.

Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate prenatal predictors of mortality in fetuses with congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH).

Methods: A systematic literature search was performed to identify relevant observational studies that evaluated the ability of lung-to-head ratio (LHR), observed-to-expected LHR (o/e-LHR), observed-to-expected total fetal lung volume (o/e-TFLV), lung-to-thorax transverse area ratio (L/T ratio), intrathoracic herniation of the liver and the stomach, and side of diaphragmatic hernia, using a threshold for the prediction of mortality in fetuses with CDH. Study quality was assessed using the QUADAS-2 tool.

Macrophage-mediated xenogeneic rejection is a major immunological obstacle. We recently reported that membrane-type surfactant protein-D (SP-D) on swine endothelial cells (SECs) suppressed macrophage-mediated rejection. Similar to SP-D, the carbohydrate recognition domain of surfactant protein-A (SP-A) can induce inhibitory signals in effector cells.

Article Synopsis
  • Congenital pulmonary airway malformation is a rare lung condition found in infants, and this report highlights a specific case of a 1-year-old boy with this condition who underwent surgery.
  • The boy was diagnosed prenatally, and preoperative imaging showed a microcystic lesion in his right lung, leading to an elective thoracoscopic segmentectomy when he was 1 year and 4 months old.
  • The surgery successfully removed the affected lung tissue while preserving healthy portions, and the patient had no complications post-surgery, with the histological analysis confirming the diagnosis of stocker type 2 malformation.
