Facing hierarchy: a qualitative study of residents' experiences in an obstetrical simulation scenario.

Background: Residents in surgical specialties face a steep hierarchy when managing medical crises. Hierarchy can negatively impact patient safety when team members are reluctant to speak up. Yet, simulation has scarcely been previously utilized to qualitatively explore the way residents in surgical specialities navigate this challenge.

Three Sides to Every Story: Preparing Patient and Family Storytellers, Facilitators, and Audiences.

Background: There is a growing recognition that patient engagement is necessary for the cultivation of patient- and family-centered care (PFCC) in the hospital setting. Acting on the emerging understanding that hearing stories from our patients gives valuable insight about our ability to provide compassionate PFCC, we developed an educational patient experience curriculum at our acute care teaching hospital.

Objectives: To understand the benefits and consequences of patient storytelling and to explore the impact of our curriculum on participants.

Beyond catharsis: the nuanced emotion of patient storytellers in an educational role.

Context: As health care organisations seek to cultivate patient and family-centred care, patient storytelling has emerged as a valued educational resource. However, repeatedly harnessing patient perspectives to educate health care professionals may have consequences. We need robust insight into what it means to be a patient storyteller in order to ensure ethical and appropriate engagement with patients as an educational resource.
