Use of liothyronine (T3) in hypothyroidism: Joint British Thyroid Association/Society for endocrinology consensus statement.

Persistent symptoms in patients treated for hypothyroidism are common. Despite more than 20 years of debate, the use of liothyronine for this indication remains controversial, as numerous randomised trials have failed to show a benefit of treatment regimens that combine liothyronine (T3) with levothyroxine over levothyroxine monotherapy. This consensus statement attempts to provide practical guidance to clinicians faced with patients who have persistent symptoms during thyroid hormone replacement therapy.

Predicting successful biologics tapering in patients with inflammatory arthritis: Secondary analyses based on the BIOlogical Dose OPTimisation (BIODOPT) trial.

Aims: To evaluate predictors for successful biologic tapering among patients with inflammatory arthritis using baseline characteristics from the BIODOPT trial.

Methods: Adult patients with rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis or axial spondyloarthritis on stable biologic dose and in low disease activity ≥12 months were enrolled. Participants were randomized (2:1) to disease activity-guided biologic tapering or continuation of baseline biologic.

Strain-tunable Berry curvature in quasi-two-dimensional chromium telluride.

Magnetic transition metal chalcogenides form an emerging platform for exploring spin-orbit driven Berry phase phenomena owing to the nontrivial interplay between topology and magnetism. Here we show that the anomalous Hall effect in pristine CrTe thin films manifests a unique temperature-dependent sign reversal at nonzero magnetization, resulting from the momentum-space Berry curvature as established by first-principles simulations. The sign change is strain tunable, enabled by the sharp and well-defined substrate/film interface in the quasi-two-dimensional CrTe epitaxial films, revealed by scanning transmission electron microscopy and depth-sensitive polarized neutron reflectometry.

Detection of boldenone in the urine of female horses-ex vivo formation versus administration.

Boldenone is an anabolic-androgenic steroid (AAS) that is prohibited in equine sports. However, in certain situations, it is endogenous, potentially formed by the microbes in urine. An approach to the differentiation based on the detection of the biomarkers Δ1-progesterone, 20(S)-hydroxy-Δ1-progesterone and 20(S)-hydroxyprogesterone was assessed, and their concentrations were monitored in the urine of untreated female horses (n = 291) alongside boldenone, boldienone, testosterone and androstenedione.

Identifying epileptogenic abnormalities through spatial clustering of MEG interictal band power.

Successful epilepsy surgery depends on localizing and resecting cerebral abnormalities and networks that generate seizures. Abnormalities, however, may be widely distributed across multiple discontiguous areas. We propose spatially constrained clusters as candidate areas for further investigation and potential resection.

A primary care delivered, technology supported lifestyle program for Type 2 Diabetes Management: An evaluation of changes in metabolic health, feasibility, and acceptability - A pilot interventional study protocol.

Background: Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) is associated with significant health complications and socioeconomic costs. Previous research conducted through an outpatient research facility demonstrated use of a low carbohydrate (LC) diet and exercise plan delivered in the format of an education book combined with use of real-time continuous glucose monitoring (RT-CGM) is an effective self-management intervention to improve weight and blood glucose management in patients with T2D. Primary health care remains the central access point for patient management of T2D, but General Practitioners (GPs) lack access to effective evidenced-based, self-management programs that can be prescribed to improve patient outcomes.

Partition of variation for predicting experimental power with a broiler chicken example.

A 1932 editorial in Poultry Science stated that sampling theory, or experimental power, could be useful for "the investigator to know how many … birds to put into each experimental pen." Nevertheless, in the past 90 yr, appropriate experimental power estimates have rarely been applied to research with poultry. To estimate the overall variation and appropriate use of resources with animals in pens, a nested analysis should be conducted.

Temporal stability of intracranial electroencephalographic abnormality maps for localizing epileptogenic tissue.

Objective: Identifying abnormalities on interictal intracranial electroencephalogram (iEEG), by comparing patient data to a normative map, has shown promise for the localization of epileptogenic tissue and prediction of outcome. The approach typically uses short interictal segments of approximately 1 min. However, the temporal stability of findings has not been established.

Star polymers have been gaining interest due to their tunable properties. They have been used as effective stabilizers for Pickering emulsions. Herein, star polymers were synthesized via activators regenerated by electron transfer (ARGET) atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP).

Preconception Management of Hyperthyroidism and Thyroid Status in Subsequent Pregnancy: A Population-Based Cohort Study.

Context: Optimal thyroid status in pregnancy is essential in reducing the risk of adverse outcomes. The management of hyperthyroidism in women of reproductive age poses unique challenges and it is unclear how preconception treatment strategies impact on thyroid status in subsequent pregnancy.

Objective: We aimed to determine trends in the management of hyperthyroidism before and during pregnancy and to assess the impact of different preconception treatment strategies on maternal thyroid status.

Efficacy of certolizumab pegol across baseline rheumatoid factor subgroups in patients with rheumatoid arthritis: Post-hoc analysis of clinical trials.

Aim: Certolizumab pegol (CZP), an Fc-free, PEGylated tumor necrosis factor inhibitor (TNFi), has shown rapid and sustained reduction in signs and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Elevated rheumatoid factor (RF) level has been associated with RA disease progression and poorer TNFi response. We assessed the efficacy of CZP in patients with early and established RA across baseline RF levels.

Incidence, prevalence, and co-occurrence of autoimmune disorders over time and by age, sex, and socioeconomic status: a population-based cohort study of 22 million individuals in the UK.

Background: A rise in the incidence of some autoimmune disorders has been described. However, contemporary estimates of the overall incidence of autoimmune diseases and trends over time are scarce and inconsistent. We aimed to investigate the incidence and prevalence of 19 of the most common autoimmune diseases in the UK, assess trends over time, and by sex, age, socioeconomic status, season, and region, and we examine rates of co-occurrence among autoimmune diseases.

Atmospheric pressure predicts probability of departure for migratory songbirds.

Background: Weather can have both delayed and immediate impacts on animal populations, and species have evolved behavioral adaptions to respond to weather conditions. Weather has long been hypothesized to affect the timing and intensity of avian migration, and radar studies have demonstrated strong correlations between weather and broad-scale migration patterns. How weather affects individual decisions about the initiation of migratory flights, particularly at the beginning of migration, remains uncertain.

Songbirds initiate migratory flights synchronously relative to civil dusk.

Background: Each spring and fall billions of songbirds depart on nocturnal migrations across the globe. Theory suggests that songbirds should depart on migration shortly after sunset to maximize their potential for nightly flight duration or to time departure with the emergence of celestial cues needed for orientation and navigation. Although captive studies have found that songbirds depart during a narrow window of time after sunset, observational studies have found that wild birds depart later and more asynchronously relative to sunset than predicted.

Framework for Quality Assurance of Ultrahigh Dose Rate Clinical Trials Investigating FLASH Effects and Current Technology Gaps.

FLASH radiation therapy (FLASH-RT), delivered with ultrahigh dose rate (UHDR), may allow patients to be treated with less normal tissue toxicity for a given tumor dose compared with currently used conventional dose rate. Clinical trials are being carried out and are needed to test whether this improved therapeutic ratio can be achieved clinically. During the clinical trials, quality assurance and credentialing of equipment and participating sites, particularly pertaining to UHDR-specific aspects, will be crucial for the validity of the outcomes of such trials.

Highlight results, don't hide them: Enhance interpretation, reduce biases and improve reproducibility.

Most neuroimaging studies display results that represent only a tiny fraction of the collected data. While it is conventional to present "only the significant results" to the reader, here we suggest that this practice has several negative consequences for both reproducibility and understanding. This practice hides away most of the results of the dataset and leads to problems of selection bias and irreproducibility, both of which have been recognized as major issues in neuroimaging studies recently.

Genetic variation for rectal gland volatiles among recently collected isofemale lines and a domesticated strain of Queensland fruit fly, Bactrocera tryoni (Diptera: Tephritidae).

Divergence between populations in mating behaviour can function as a potent premating isolating mechanism and promote speciation. However, very few cases of inherited intraspecific variation in sexual signalling have been reported in tephritid fruit flies, despite them being a highly speciose family. We tested for such variation in one tephritid, the Queensland fruit fly, Bactrocera tryoni (Qfly).

Normative ranges of biventricular volumes and function in healthy term newborns.

Background: Cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) is increasingly used in newborns with congenital heart disease. However, reporting on ventricular volumes and mass is hindered by an absence of normative data in this population.

Design/methods: Healthy term (37-41 weeks gestation) newborns underwent non-sedated, free-breathing CMR within the first week of life using the 'feed and wrap' technique.

Repairing and Preventing Photooxidation of Few-Layer Black Phosphorus with β-Carotene.

Few-layer black phosphorus (FLBP), a technologically important 2D material, faces a major hurdle to consumer applications: spontaneous degradation under ambient conditions. Blocking the direct exposure of FLBP to the environment has remained the key strategy to enhance its stability, but this can also limit its utility. In this paper, a more ambitious approach to handling FLBP is reported where not only is FLBP oxidation blocked, but it is also repaired postoxidation.

Interictal MEG abnormalities to guide intracranial electrode implantation and predict surgical outcome.

Intracranial EEG (iEEG) is the gold standard technique for epileptogenic zone (EZ) localisation, but requires a preconceived hypothesis of the location of the epileptogenic tissue. This placement is guided by qualitative interpretations of seizure semiology, MRI, EEG and other imaging modalities, such as magnetoencephalography (MEG). Quantitative abnormality mapping using MEG has recently been shown to have potential clinical value.

Experience With the Routine Use of Electronic Patient-Reported Outcome Measures for Patients With Lung Cancer.

Purpose: The Christie NHS Foundation Trust launched their electronic patient-reported outcome measures (ePROMs) service in January 2019 in the routine clinical setting. The lung cancer questionnaires consist of 14 symptom items, adapted from the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events (version 5.0) and the EuroQol EQ-5D-5L quality-of-life (QoL) tool.

Normative brain mapping using scalp EEG and potential clinical application.

A normative electrographic activity map could be a powerful resource to understand normal brain function and identify abnormal activity. Here, we present a normative brain map using scalp EEG in terms of relative band power. In this exploratory study we investigate its temporal stability, its similarity to other imaging modalities, and explore a potential clinical application.

Complementary structural and functional abnormalities to localise epileptogenic tissue.

Background: When investigating suitability for epilepsy surgery, people with drug-refractory focal epilepsy may have intracranial EEG (iEEG) electrodes implanted to localise seizure onset. Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (dMRI) may be acquired to identify key white matter tracts for surgical avoidance. Here, we investigate whether structural connectivity abnormalities, inferred from dMRI, may be used in conjunction with functional iEEG abnormalities to aid localisation of the epileptogenic zone (EZ), improving surgical outcomes in epilepsy.
