Interpretation time for screening mammography as a function of the number of computer-aided detection marks.

Computer-aided detection (CAD) alerts radiologists to findings potentially associated with breast cancer but is notorious for creating false-positive marks. Although a previous paper found that radiologists took more time to interpret mammograms with more CAD marks, our impression was that this was not true in actual interpretation. We hypothesized that radiologists would selectively disregard these marks when present in larger numbers.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a rare neoplasm of secretory epithelium that most commonly occurs in the fifth and sixth decades of life. It is characterized by high recurrence rates and poor response to chemotherapy, In the orbit, ACC usually presents as a lacrimal gland mass. We describe the rare case of a 70-year-old woman who presented with pain during mastication and bilateral facial numbness in the cranial nerve V2 distribution.

An early surgical training module for compartment pressure measurement.

Background: We test a novel simulated teaching module's ability to educate junior residents in the assessment of compartment syndrome (CS) and compartment pressure measurement (CPM).

Methods: Twenty-two postgraduate year 1 and postgraduate year 2 surgical residents received a 2-hour didactic and practical teaching module on CS assessment and CPM using a simulated model. A structured teaching session by a postgraduate year 5 surgical resident was assessed by carefully constructed pretest, post-test, and delayed retention tests and a practical testing session by 2 board-certified general surgeons.

Lack of association between Press Ganey emergency department patient satisfaction scores and emergency department administration of analgesic medications.

Study Objective: We explore the relationship between Press Ganey emergency department (ED) patient satisfaction scores and ED administration of analgesic medications, including amount of opioid analgesics received, among patients who completed a patient satisfaction survey.

Methods: We conducted a secondary data analysis of Press Ganey ED patient satisfaction surveys from patients discharged from 2 academic, urban EDs October 2009 to September 2011. We matched survey responses to data on opioid and nonopioid analgesics administered in the ED, demographic characteristics, and temporal factors from the ED electronic medical records.
