Review of Factors Contributing to Nodular Goiter and Thyroid Carcinoma.

There is an increased incidence of thyroid nodules and cancer. In this article, the reasons for this increase are evaluated and discussed. The factors causing increases in the incidence of nodules are the same as those causing increases in thyroid cancer.

Demographic, clinical, laboratory, ultrasonographic, and cytological features of patients with Hashimoto's thyroiditis: results of a university hospital of 769 patients in Turkey.

We investigated the demographic and clinical features of patients with Hashimoto's thyroiditis who had been diagnosed and treated in Ege University, the main referral center in the Aegean region of Turkey. Medical records of patients who had been followed in the endocrinology clinic of Ege University were retrospectively evaluated. Patients who had been diagnosed as having any thyroid disorder were determined.

Increasing severity of cardiac autonomic neuropathy is associated with increasing prevalence of nephropathy, retinopathy, and peripheral neuropathy in Turkish type 2 diabetics.

Background: Cardiac autonomic neuropathy (CAN) is the most frequent and clinically important form of diabetic autonomic neuropathy. CAN is associated with increased frequency of other microvascular complications of diabetes mellitus (DM). In this study, we evaluated the prevalence diabetic nephropathy, retinopathy, and peripheral neuropathy, and measured gastric emptying time and bladder emptying time in type 2 diabetic patients with varying degrees of CAN.

Effects of bisphosphonates on lipid metabolism.

Objectives: Bisphosphonates are widely used for the treatment of metabolic bone disorders and their effects on lipid metabolism have also been investigated. Some studies reported that bisphosphonates have beneficial effects on serum cholesterol levels. In this study we aimed to assess the effects of bisphosphonates on lipid levels in hyperlipidemic patients who received bisphosphonates because of osteoporosis.

Does Chernobyl accident have any effect on thyroid cancers in Turkey? A retrospective review of thyroid cancers from 1982 to 2006.

Besides the genetic and environmental factors, radiation is an important aetiological cause in the occurrence of thyroid cancer (TC), particularly papillary carcinoma. Chernobyl disaster led to a dramatic increase in the frequency of TC in Eastern Europe. We aimed to determine the data of TC in our unit from 1982 to 2006 and whether Chernobyl disaster has a possible effect on TC distribution.

Assessment of insulin resistance in the idiopathic hirsutism.

Background: Idiopathic hirsutism (IH) is the second most common cause of hirsutism, after polycystic ovary syndrome and occurs in about 15% of hirsute women. There are not many studies showing whether patients with IH also have insulin resistance. In the present study, we aimed to investigate the insulin sensivity in IH with non-obese and changing hormone levels during the hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic clamp.

Thyroid hemiagenesis associated with Graves' disease and Graves' ophthalmopathy: case report.

Failure of embryologic development of a lobe of the thyroid gland is a rare anomaly. Usually, this condition is diagnosed when there are some other pathologic conditions in the gland and is often found when a patient presents with a thyroid nodule, which in reality is compensatory hypertrophy of the side that is present, therefore appearing as a nodule. A variety of pathological conditions occur in the remaining thyroid tissue in association with this rare anomaly such as adenoma, carcinoma, subacute thyroiditis, colloid nodule, Graves' disease, simple goiter, and Hashimoto thyroiditis.

Effect of weight loss on bone metabolism: comparison of vertical banded gastroplasty and medical intervention.

Background: We studied the effects of weight loss on bone metabolism.

Methods: 16 consecutive surgically-treated (14 female, 2 male) morbidly obese patients and 65 obese (53 male, 12 female) medically-treated patients were enrolled in an observational study. Surgical treatment for morbidly obese patients was vertical banded gastroplasty (VBG).

Effect of hypo- and hyperthyroidism on gastric myoelectrical activity.

Although hypo- and hyperthyroid patients have different symptoms in the gastrointestinal tract, the mechanism of thyroid action on the gut remains poorly understood. Thus the aim of this study was to investigate the effect of hypo- and hyperthyroidism on gastric myoelectrical activity, gastric emptying, dyspeptic symptoms. Twenty-two hyperthyroid (median age 45, 15 females) and 11 hypothyroid (median age 42, 10 females) patients were included into the study.

Effect of surgical weight loss on free radical and antioxidant balance: a preliminary report.

Background: This study observes the effect of surgical weight loss on free radical and antioxidant vitamin balance.

Patients And Methods: 22 consecutive morbidly obese patients undergoing vertical banded gastroplasty (VBG) were chosen for the study. Postoperative studies were done at 12 and 24 weeks.

Effects of insulin and sulphonylureas on insulin-like growth factor-I levels in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats.

Objective: Diabetes Mellitus is associated with decreased insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) levels and also, poor growth in diabetes is related with low circulating levels of IGF-I. Insulin acts via an increase of IGF-I synthesis on growth. We studied the effects of insulin and sulphonylureas on serum IGF-I levels and aimed to evaluate the restoration of IGF-I in different therapeutic strategies.

Familial occurrence of subacute thyroiditis.

Although subacute thyroiditis (de Quervain's thyroiditis) is presumed to be caused by a viral infection, only 2 familial occurrences of subacute thyroiditis have been reported in the literature. Typical and severe subacute thyroiditis was diagnosed in an older sister who was hospitalized for 8 days. During this period her younger sister nursed her.
