Tetraploid/near-tetraploid acute promyelocytic leukaemia with double (15;17) translocation.

A 57-year-old man presented with intermittent fever and bleeding following dental surgery. Peripheral smear and bone marrow aspirate exhibited unusually large and bizarre-looking abnormal cells which were found to be myeloblasts with aberrant CD56 and CD2 expression on immunophenotyping. Fluorescence in situ hybridization analysis revealed an extra RARA gene rearrangement.

Practice and performance of lupus anticoagulant tests: A single centre experience.

Introduction: Lupus anticoagulant (LA) is a well-known risk factor for thrombosis. Correct diagnosis of LA is essential in patient management with anticoagulation. The objectives of this study were to document the clinical and laboratory characteristics of patients tested for LA and to evaluate existing LA testing methods in our laboratory with the aim of improving the performance of LA test interpretation and reporting.

A new complex translocation (8;22;21)(q22;q12;q22) in RUNX1/RUNX1T1 acute myeloid leukaemia.

Introduction: Acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) with t(8;21)(q22;q22) producing RUNX1-RUNX1T1 rearrangement is a distinct sub-type which is usually associated with a favourable clinical outcome. Variant forms of t(8;21) are rare. Herein we describe a novel variant of t(8;21) AML in a 25-year-old pregnant woman who presented with intermittent fever.

Spontaneous presacral haematoma mimicking rectal malignancy--an unusual consequence of anticoagulation.

An 81-year-old man on warfarin was admitted to hospital after 3 days of constipation, straining and mild rectal bleeding. A large, boggy mass was felt posteriorly on direct rectal examination. Investigations revealed a normocytic anaemia and a supratherapeutic international normalised ratio (INR).

Perceptions of risk factors of cardiovascular disease and cardiac rehabilitation: a cross-sectional study targeting the Chinese population in the Midlands, UK.

Objectives: To find out and explore the knowledge and opinion of Chinese people on cardiovascular disease and awareness of cardiac rehabilitation.

Design: A cross-sectional study using 14-item bilingual (Chinese and English) questionnaires that include information on demographics, health status, cardiovascular disease related knowledge and perception, and awareness and understanding of the cardiac rehabilitation programme.

Setting: Chinese community groups in the Midlands, UK from January to April 2008.
