Purpose: Studies on antihypertensive treatment are important, as hypertension remains the major risk factor for cardiovascular morbidity and premature death. However, antihypertensive medicines are also used for other conditions, and the use of these medicines as a proxy for a diagnosis of hypertension might lead to misclassification in pharmacoepidemiological studies. This study aimed to investigate to what extent people dispensed antihypertensive medicines have been diagnosed with hypertension.

: To improve hypoglycaemia management in primary care, more insight is needed into the opportunities to screen for hypoglycaemia risk and subsequent treatment modification using routinely available data. Our primary aim was to assess the number of diabetes patients with an estimated high risk of hypoglycaemia and describe the treatment changes in these patients using pharmacy dispensing data. Additionally, our aim was to investigate patient characteristics associated with such treatment changes.

Introduction: Patient engagement in pharmacovigilance (PEP) has been shown to improve information on adverse drug reactions (ADRs), which may not be found in reports from healthcare professionals. This review shows that there is paucity of information on PEP in lower-middle-income countries (LMICs), particularly Africa. It provides insights into PEP in high-income countries (HICs) compared with Africa to help identify the disparities and system challenges in Africa.

Background: Dispensing and prescribing antibiotics is inappropriate in many of the countries in the European Union, including Spain, and a threat to the population's health. To tackle the growth of antimicrobial resistance, the Happy Patient project was set up under the sponsorship of the European Commission.

Aim: O ascertain the characteristics of dispensing antibiotic therapy in Spanish community pharmacies.

Background: The final prescription check is a mandatory but time-consuming process in Dutch community pharmacies. A safer dispensing process may have made the final prescription check obsolete.

Objective: To describe the final prescription check in Dutch community pharmacies and explore pharmacists' attitudes towards changing this.

Background: Deprescribing of medication for cardiovascular risk factors and diabetes has been incorporated in clinical guidelines but proves to be difficult to implement in primary care. Training of healthcare providers is needed to enhance deprescribing in eligible patients. This study will examine the effects of a blended training program aimed at initiating and conducting constructive deprescribing consultations with patients.

Aims: The aims of this study were to measure the prevalence of polypharmacy and describe the prescribing of selected medications known for overuse in older people with polypharmacy in primary care.

Methods: This was a multinational retrospective cohort study across six countries: Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK. We used anonymized longitudinal patient-level information from general practice databases hosted by IQVIA.

Background: The daily work of community pharmacists includes dispensing antibiotics, but little is known about how this should be done to ensure quality use of antibiotics.

Objective: To define specific tasks of the community pharmacist when dispensing antibiotics and to assess to what extent these tasks can be implemented in practice in Europe.

Methods: A Delphi study with community pharmacist experts in the European Economic Area.

Previous studies report an association between maternal diabetes mellitus (MDM) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), often overlooking unmeasured confounders such as shared genetics and environmental factors. We therefore conducted a multinational cohort study with linked mother-child pairs data in Hong Kong, New Zealand, Taiwan, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden to evaluate associations between different MDM (any MDM, gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and pregestational diabetes mellitus (PGDM)) and ADHD using Cox proportional hazards regression. We included over 3.

Pharmaceutical residues end up in surface waters, impacting drinking water sources and contaminating the aquatic ecosystem. Pharmacists can play a role in reducing pharmaceutical residues, yet this is often not addressed in pharmacy undergraduate education. Therefore, we developed the educational module "Reducing Pharmaceuticals in Water" for pharmacy students; this was integrated in our pharmacy simulation game for third year Master of Pharmacy students at the University of Groningen.

Background: Medication errors (MEs) by caregivers at home are a cause of morbidity and mortality, shortly after discharge from the hospital.

Objectives: The objective of this study was to determine the rate and types of MEs at the homes of children discharged from a hospital in Ghana and to explore the factors associated with these errors.

Design: This was a cross-sectional study of infants and children discharged from the hospital to review medication administration practices.

Aim: Oxycodone is known to have numerous drug-drug interactions (DDIs) that can potentially decrease efficacy or lead to adverse drug reactions (ADRs). However, there is limited research on the frequency of DDIs associated with oxycodone, which is important in optimising pharmacovigilance and the need for additional research on certain DDIs. In this study, the frequency of pharmacologically and clinically relevant DDI perpetrators was studied in patients with cancer.

To date, the scientific literature on health variables for antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has been investigated throughout several systematic reviews, often with a focus on only one aspect of the One Health variables: human, animal, or environment. The aim of this umbrella review is to conduct a systematic synthesis of existing evidence on AMR in humans in the community from a One Health perspective. PubMed, EMBASE, and CINAHL were searched on "antibiotic resistance" and "systematic review" from inception until 25 March 2022 (PROSPERO: CRD42022316431).

Misconceptions and knowledge gaps about antibiotics contribute to inappropriate antibiotic use and antimicrobial resistance. This study aimed to identify and prioritize misconceptions and knowledge gaps about antibiotic use from a healthcare professionals' perspective. A modified Delphi study with a predefined list of statements, two questionnaire rounds, and an expert meeting was conducted.

Article Synopsis
  • This study examines trends in antibiotic usage among long-term care (LTC) residents using pharmacy medication records from 3459 residents over three years, from May 2016 to May 2019.
  • The results show that approximately 18.9% of residents used antibiotics monthly, with total antibiotic use slightly decreasing over time, but the number of days antibiotics were taken remained stable.
  • The findings highlight concerning levels of antibiotic use, which could contribute to antibiotic resistance, emphasizing the need for better treatment guidelines in LTC settings.

Arterial hypertension is a lifelong disease, which management is recognized as the most effective way to reduce cardiovascular mortality. Even though there is extensive evidence on the benefits of lifestyle modification and antihypertensive treatment, many patients with hypertension do not reach blood pressure targets. This paper aims to review the history of antihypertensive treatment of one patient and identify the drug related problems that occurred over the study period.

Recent studies raised concerns about the increasing use of gabapentinoids in different countries. With their potential for misuse and addiction, understanding the global consumption of gabapentinoids will offer us a platform to examine the need for any interventional policies. This longitudinal trend study utilised pharmaceutical sales data from 65 countries and regions across the world to evaluate the global trends in gabapentinoid consumption between 2008-2018.

Objective: To explore whether a mentalization-based communication training for pharmacy staff impacts their ability to elicit and recognize patients' implicit and explicit medication related needs and concerns.

Methods: A single-arm intervention pilot study was conducted, in which pre-post video-recordings of pharmacy counter-conversations on dispensed-medication (N = 50 and N = 34, respectively; pharmacy staff: N = 22) were coded. Outcome measures included: detecting needs and concerns, and implicitly and explicitly eliciting and recognizing them.
