Acoustically induced dressed states of long-lived erbium ions in a crystal are demonstrated. These states are formed by rapid modulation of two-level systems via strain induced by surface acoustic waves whose frequencies exceed the optical linewidth of the ion ensemble. Multiple sidebands and the reduction of their intensities appearing near the surface are evidence of a strong interaction between the acoustic waves and the ions.

Precise spectroscopy of the hyperfine level system of Er-doped YSiO was achieved in the frequency domain. By using an optical frequency comb to stabilize the light source frequency to an accuracy on the order of hertz on a long-term scale, Allan deviation < 10 Hz was achieved for an integration time of 180 s. As a result, spectral hole-burning experiments yielded a more accurate hole spectrum with a narrow homogeneous linewidth.

Strain-mediated interaction between phonons and telecom photons is demonstrated using excited states of erbium ions embedded in a mechanical resonator. Owing to the extremely long-lived nature of rare-earth ions, the dissipation rate of the optical resonance falls below that of the mechanical one. Thus, a "reversed dissipation regime" is achieved in the optical frequency region.

Article Synopsis
  • Thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA) is a serious complication of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) that can negatively impact pregnancy.
  • A case study of a 30-year-old pregnant woman with SLE showed that her condition did not improve with standard treatments, leading to the use of plasma exchange (PE) therapy.
  • While PE helped improve her blood-related symptoms, unfortunately, fetal death occurred at 23 weeks, indicating that while PE can be beneficial, it may not prevent pregnancy loss in these cases.

We have epitaxially grown high-quality single-crystal rare-earth oxide thin films, including GdO and erbium-incorporated (ErGd)O, on silicon-on-insulator substrate, and investigated their optical properties when embedded in horizontal slot waveguides. (ErGd)O with an erbium concentration in the mid-10 cm range shows well-resolved Stark-split photoluminescence emission peaks in the telecommunications band and a photoluminescence lifetime-concentration product as large as 2.67×10 s·cm at room-temperature.

Objective: The CHOKAI and STONE scores are clinical prediction rules to predict ureteral stones in patients presenting with renal colic. Both systems contribute to reducing diagnostic radiation exposure; however, few studies have compared the two scoring systems. Therefore, we aimed to compare these systems and assess their diagnostic accuracy for ureteral stones.

Plasma exchange (PEX) can be an effective treatment in anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody-associated vasculitis with severe renal damage; however, it is still controversial. Among cases of newly diagnosed AAV with rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis at our department from 2008 onward, 11 patients who received PEX (seven cases for severe renal damage [R-PEX] and four cases for lung hemorrhage [L-PEX]) were retrospectively analyzed. All cases of R-PEX were dependent on hemodialysis at the beginning of PEX and all received seven sessions of PEX (50 mL/kg or 1.

Telecom-band single nanowire lasers made by the bottom-up vapor-liquid-solid approach, which is technologically important in optical fiber communication systems, still remain challenging. Here, we report telecom-band single nanowire lasers operating at room temperature based on multi-quantum-disk InP/InAs heterostructure nanowires. Transmission electron microscopy studies show that highly uniform multi-quantum-disk InP/InAs structure is grown in InP nanowires by self-catalyzed vapor-liquid-solid mode using indium particle catalysts.

Understanding anatomical structures and biological functions based on gene expression is critical in a systemic approach to address the complexity of the mammalian brain, where >25 000 genes are expressed in a precise manner. Co-expressed genes are thought to regulate cell type- or region-specific brain functions. Thus, well-designed data acquisition and visualization systems for profiling combinatorial gene expression in relation to anatomical structures are crucial.

We numerically and experimentally investigate strain-induced coupling between dark and bright excitons and its dynamic control using a gallium arsenide (GaAs) micromechanical resonator. Uniaxial strain induced by the mechanical resonance efficiently detunes the exciton energies and modulates the coupling strength via the deformation potential in GaAs. This allows optical access to the long-lived dark states without using any external electromagnetic field.

Estriol biosynthesis in human placenta requires the uptake of a fetal liver-derived estriol precursor, 16α-hydroxydehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (16α-OH DHEAS), by placental syncytiotrophoblasts at their basal plasma membrane (BM), which faces the fetal circulation. The aim of this work is to identify the transporter(s) mediating 16α-OH DHEAS uptake at the fetal side of syncytiotrophoblasts by using human placental BM-enriched vesicles and to examine the contribution of the putative transporter to estriol synthesis at the cellular level, using choriocarcinoma JEG-3 cells. Organic anion transporter (OAT)-4 and organic anion transporting polypeptide 2B1 proteins were enriched in human placental BM vesicles compared with crude membrane fraction.

Polycrystalline Er-Sc silicates (Er(x)Sc(2-x)SiO₅ and Er(x)Sc(2-x)Si₂O₇) were fabricated using multilayer nanostructured films of Er₂O₃/SiO₂/Sc₂O₃ deposited on SiO₂/Si substrates by RF- sputtering and thermal annealing at high temperature. RBS, TEM, GIXD, and PL results show the presence of Er(x)Sc(2-x)SiO₅ with an emission peak at 1528 nm for annealing from 900 to 1100 °C, and Er(x)Sc(2-x)Si₂O₇ with an emission peak at 1537 nm for higher annealing temperature. The PL intensity of the Er(x)Sc(2-x)Si₂O₇ phase is five times stronger than that of the Er(x)Sc(2-x)SiO₅ phase at 1250 °C.

Polycrystalline Er-Sc silicates (Er x Sc2-x Si2O7 and Er x Sc2-x SiO5) were fabricated using multilayer nanostructured films of Er2O3/SiO2/Sc2O3 deposited on SiO2/Si substrates by RF sputtering and thermal annealing at high temperature. The films were characterized by synchrotron radiation grazing incidence X-ray diffraction, cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and micro-photoluminescence measurements. The Er-Sc silicate phase Er x Sc2-x Si2O7 is the dominant film, and Er and Sc are homogeneously distributed after thermal treatment because of the excess of oxygen from SiO2 interlayers.

Systems-level identification and analysis of cellular circuits in the brain will require the development of whole-brain imaging with single-cell resolution. To this end, we performed comprehensive chemical screening to develop a whole-brain clearing and imaging method, termed CUBIC (clear, unobstructed brain imaging cocktails and computational analysis). CUBIC is a simple and efficient method involving the immersion of brain samples in chemical mixtures containing aminoalcohols, which enables rapid whole-brain imaging with single-photon excitation microscopy.

The photoluminescence spectra from a quantum-dot exciton weakly-coupled to a planar photonic-crystal cavity is experimentally investigated by temperature tuning. Significant resonance shifts of the cavity mode are observed as the cavity mode spectrally approaches that of the exciton mode, showing the appearance of cavity-to-exciton attraction or mode pulling. Cavity-mode spectral shifts are also found theoretically using a master equation model that includes incoherent pump processes for the coupled exciton and cavity, pure dephasing, and allows for photon emission via radiation modes and the leaky cavity mode.

We demonstrate the coherent transfer of optical orbital angular momentum (OAM) to the center of mass momentum of excitons in semiconductor GaN using a four-wave mixing (FWM) process. When we apply the optical vortex (OV) as an excitation pulse, the diffracted FWM signal exhibits phase singularities that satisfy the OAM conservation law, which remain clear within the exciton dephasing time (approximately 1ps). We also demonstrate the arbitrary control of the topological charge in the output signal by changing the OAM of the input pulse.
