Aims/hypothesis: Type 2 diabetes is associated with a high risk of sudden cardiac death (SCD), but the risk of dying from another cause (non-SCD) is proportionally even higher. The aim of the study was to identify easily available ECG-derived features associated with SCD, while considering the competing risk of dying from non-SCD causes.

Methods: In the SURDIAGENE (Survie, Diabete de type 2 et Genetique) French prospective cohort of individuals with type 2 diabetes, 15 baseline ECG parameters were interpreted among 1362 participants (mean age 65 years; HbA 62±17 mmol/mol [7.

Background: Left ventricular ejection fraction lacks accuracy in predicting sudden cardiac death, resulting in unnecessary implantation of cardioverter defibrillators for the primary prevention of sudden cardiac death. Baroreflex sensitivity could help to stratify patients at risk of ventricular arrhythmia.

Aim: To assess the association between cardiac baroreflex sensitivity and ventricular arrhythmias in patients implanted with an implantable cardioverter defibrillator for the primary prevention of sudden cardiac death after myocardial infarction.

Campylobacter has been associated with immunoproliferative small intestinal disease (IPSID), on the basis of 16S rDNA sequencing, in situ hybridization, and immunohistochemistry. Here, for the first time, we have cultured Campylobacter from the stools of a patient with IPSID. Phenotypic analysis and whole genome sequencing identified Campylobacter coli.

In primary Crohn's disease (CD), laparoscopic ileocolic resection has been shown to be both feasible and safe, and is associated with improved outcomes in terms of postoperative morbidity and length of hospital stay. At this time, it is unclear whether the laparoscopic approach can be routinely proposed as a safe procedure for patients with complex CD involving localized abscess, fistula or recurrent disease. The aim of this systematic literature review was to assess the feasibility and safety of laparoscopic surgery for complex or recurrent CD.

Haiti's Ministry of Public Health and Population collaborated with global partners to enhance malaria surveillance in two disaster-affected areas within 3 months of the January 2010 earthquake. Data were collected between March 4 and April 9, 2010 by mobile medical teams. Malaria rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) were used for case confirmation.

Mortality rate of acute pancreatitis is 5% but can reach 47% in necrotizing pancreatitis with multiorgan failure. Prediction of an unfavourable outcome is based on bioclinical scoring systems either specific of pancreatitis or not, single biological prognostic criteria as CRP and procalciton levels measured during the first 48 h and abdominal CT-scan. Medical treatment of acute pancreatitis is symptomatic and requires intensive care in severe forms of the disease.

The diagnosis of acute pancreatitis is based on the association of an acute abdominal pain with raised level of seric lipase exceeding three fold the normal value during the first 48 h following pain occurrence. The main causes are biliary lithiasis and chronic alcoholism. Oedematous pancreatitis resume in a few days whereas severe necrotizing pancreatitis may require long staining and complex medico-surgical management.

Objectives: The association between workplace bullying and psychotropic drug use is not well established. This study was aimed at exploring the association between workplace bullying, and its characteristics, and psychotropic drug use and studying the mediating role of physical and mental health.

Methods: The study population consisted of a random sample of 3132 men and 4562 women of the working population in the south-east of France.

Spermatogonia- stem cells and progenitors of adult spermatogenesis- are killed through a p53-regulated apoptotic process after gamma-irradiation but the death effectors are still poorly characterized. Our data demonstrate that both intrinsic and extrinsic apoptotic pathways are involved, and especially that spermatogonia can be split into two main populations, according to apoptotic effectors. Following irradiation both Dr5 and Puma genes are upregulated in the alpha6-integrin-positive Side Population (SP) fraction, which is highly enriched in spermatogonia.

Background: The short-term effects of granulocyte-colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) have been extensively studied, but recent reports of G-CSF-induced genetic perturbations raised concerns regarding its long-term safety. In this respect, duration of G-CSF-induced perturbations has been less studied than short-term effects and needs to be evaluated.

Study Design And Methods: G-CSF mobilization-induced immunologic alterations were prospectively analyzed in a cohort of 24 healthy donors.

Lung emphysema and fibrosis are severe complications of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and uncontrolled protease activation may be involved in the pathogenesis. Using experimental elastase-induced acute inflammation, we demonstrate here that inflammation and development of emphysema is IL-1R1 and Toll/IL-1R signal transduction adaptor MyD88 dependent; however, TLR recognition is dispensable in this model. Elastase induces IL-1beta, TNF-alpha, keratinocyte-derived chemokine, and IL-6 secretion and neutrophil recruitment in the lung, which is drastically reduced in the absence of IL-1R1 or MyD88.

Study Objectives: The purpose of this study was to explore the associations between workplace bullying, the characteristics of workplace bullying, and sleep disturbances in a large sample of employees of the French working population.

Design: Workplace bullying, evaluated using the validated instrument developed by Leymann, and sleep disturbances, as well as covariates, were measured using a self-administered questionnaire. Covariates included age, marital status, presence of children, education, occupation, working hours, night work, physical and chemical exposures at work, self-reported health, and depressive symptoms.

Background: Pancreatic fistula (PF) is one of the most common postoperative complications of pancreatoduodenectomy (PD). A recent International Study Group on Pancreatic Fistula (ISGPF) definition grades the severity of PF according to the clinical impact on the patient's hospital course. Although PF is generally treated conservatively (grade A), some cases may require interventional procedures (grade B) or may be life-threatening and necessitate emergency reoperation (grade C).

Ion-exchange chromatography has been applied to purification of unsaturated oligoglucuronans. After an isocratic elution on a strong anion-exchange column, the collected fractions were desalted by low pressure size exclusion chromatography. However, this efficient separation was limited by the time required to desalt.

Cushing's syndrome is infrequently associated with adenocarcinomas of the lung. We present the clinical features of this syndrome in one case report. The pathogenesis of the syndrome explains the clinical signs, rather different from classical Cushing's disease and also the highly suggestive biological features.
