Hydrogen Sulfide (HS) is an endogenously produced gas, previously demonstrated to reduce oxidative stress, reduce ATP depletion, and protect from ischemia and reperfusion injury. An essential process during Danio rerio's left-right organizer (Kupffer's Vesicle, KV) formation is the formation of a motile cilium by developing KV cells which extends into the KV lumen. Beating of motile cilia within the KV lumen directs fluid flow to establish the embryo's left-right axis. However, the timepoint at which KV cells start to form cilia and how cilia formation is coordinated with KV lumen formation have not been examined.

During mitosis, Aurora B kinase is required for forming proper bi-oriented kinetochore-microtubule attachments. Current models suggest that tension exerted between a pair of sister-kinetochores (inter-kinetochore stretch) produces a spatial separation of Aurora B kinase from kinetochore-associated microtubule binding substrates, such as the Knl1-Mis12-Ndc80 (KMN) network, resulting in a decrease of phosphorylation and, thus, an increase of affinity for microtubules. Using Single-Molecule High-Resolution Colocalization (SHREC) microscopy analysis of the kinetochore-associated motor CENP-E, we now show that CENP-E undergoes structural rearrangements prior to and after tension generation at the kinetochore, and displays a bi-modal Gaussian distribution on a pair of bi-oriented sister kinetochores.

The mechanisms involved in the p53-dependent control of gene expression following DNA damage have not been completely elucidated. Here, we show that the p53 C terminus associates with factors that are required for the ultraviolet (UV)-induced inhibition of the mRNA 3' cleavage step of the polyadenylation reaction, such as the tumor suppressor BARD1 and the 3' processing factor cleavage-stimulation factor 1 (CstF1). We found that p53 can coexist in complexes with CstF and BARD1 in extracts of UV-treated cells, suggesting a role for p53 in mRNA 3' cleavage following DNA damage.

Objective: The objective of this study was to quantify hormones that regulate energy and glucose homeostasis to establish possible mechanisms for the greater efficacy of Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) compared with laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (LAGB) in achieving weight loss and improved insulin sensitivity.

Design: Longitudinal study of patients undergoing LAGB (n=15) and RYGB (n=28) who were studied before surgery and at 2, 12, 26 and 52 weeks afterwards.

Background: The aim of this study was to measure the circulating levels of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), glucose-dependent insulinotropic peptide (GIP), and glucagon in patients who had undergone adjustable gastric banding (BND) or Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) to understand the differences in glucose and insulin regulation after these procedures.

Methods: This was a cross-sectional study of 3 groups of women matched for age and body mass index: group 1, overweight controls (n = 13); group 2, BND (n = 10); and group 3, RYGB (n = 13).
