Background: Hospitalization for Transurethral Prostate Resection (TURP) involves circadian rhythm disturbance - a possible cause of Postoperative Neurocognitive Disorder (POCD) in elderly patients. This study investigated whether melatonin ameliorated this effect.
Methods: A double-blind, randomized clinical trial used a battery of neuropsychological tests to evaluate cognitive performance of 118 patients aged ≥ 60, before TURP with spinal anesthesia, and at 21- and 180-days PO.
Introduction: Keratoconus patients turn to the internet for answers to their disease expectations. Webpages are not filtered or submitted to evaluation before getting published. We aim to evaluate the quality and readability of the online information regarding keratoconus in Portugal and Brazil.

Objective: Tofacitinib, an oral Janus kinase inhibitor, has been tested against a placebo in 289 patients with COVID-19 pneumonia. We analyzed the data from the tofacitinib- and placebo-treated patient cohorts to evaluate the laboratory profiles between baseline and day 7.
Methods: We performed post hoc analyses on the following laboratory tests over time during the first 7 days after randomization: hemoglobin, leukocytes, neutrophils, lymphocytes, platelets, alanine aminotransferase, and aspartate aminotransferase.
Objective: Radical cystectomy (RC) with ileal conduit (IC) remains a main treatment for muscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC). Laparoscopy in this multistage surgery is quite demanding, so laparoscopic RC (LRC) with intracorporeal IC (IIC) is a technically exceptional procedure. We aim to simplify it, demonstrating our technique, step-by-step.

This study assessed the pathogenicity of Callinectes sapidus Reovirus 2 in Callinectes danae and its effects on the metabolic, immunological and behavioural parameters. CsRV2-negative specimens were divided into CsRV2 inoculum (n = 10) and saline injection (n = 15).

In this framework, our goal in this study was to analyze the media representation of scientists in Brazil during the first year of this global public health crisis. To this end, we applied a research protocol and, using statistical techniques, quantitatively analyzed newscasts on the country's main TV news program, Jornal Nacional.

Chemical and structural alterations hold great importance in the field of diagenesis. Attenuated Total Reflectance - Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) is a valuable method for examining bio-apatite composition changes. Infrared spectroscopy (IR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were employed to analyze both modern and archaeological bone specimens.

As nymphs of Diaphorina citri play a crucial role in the acquisition and transmission of the citrus greening bacterium, suppression of this life stage is particularly important. However, the lack of a tractable feeding assay for use with first instar D.

Materials And Methods: This single-center cross-sectional survey collected retrospective data from the clinical phase of BBO examinations between 2016 and 2023. The quality of orthodontic clinical outcomes of each case was assessed by means of the Cast-Radiograph Evaluation (CRE), while case complexity was evaluated using the Discrepancy Index (DI), both tools provided by the American Board of Orthodontics.
Background: Heart transplantation (HT) recipients are at risk for urgent rehospitalizations following discharge. However, data on prevalence, risk factors and clinical outcomes associated with post-HT rehospitalization are limited.
Methods: This study aims to describe patterns of urgent rehospitalizations in HT recipients at a cardiology reference center in Brazil.
Nerve agents are organophosphates (OPs) that act as potent inhibitors of acetylcholinesterase (AChE), the enzyme responsible for the hydrolysis of acetylcholine. After inhibition, a dealkylation reaction of the phosphorylated serine, known as the aging of AChE, can occur. When aged, reactivators of OP-inhibited AChE are no longer effective.

According to the IPCC, by the year 2100, rises in global temperature could reach up to 5 °C above current averages. On a planet-wide scale, this is one of the effects of climate changes that could have repercussions on the biological cycle of Aedes aegypti, the main arbovirus vector in urban environments and a transmitter of the arboviruses that cause dengue, Zika, chikungunya and urban yellow fever. The objective of this study was to evaluate morphological changes in Ae.

Stimulation of the dorsal half of the rat periaqueductal gray (DPAG) with 60-Hz pulses of increasing intensity, 30-μA pulses of increasing frequency, or increasing doses of an excitatory amino acid elicits sequential defensive responses of exophthalmia, immobility, trotting, galloping, and jumping. These responses may be controlled by voltage-gated calcium channel-specific firing patterns. Indeed, a previous study showed that microinjection of the DPAG with 15 nmol of verapamil, a putative blocker of L-type calcium channels, attenuated all defensive responses to electrical stimulation at the same site as the injection.

The recipient characteristics and operative and long-term variables were assessed in a meta-analysis. A total of 781 studies were screened, and 33 were thoroughly reviewed.

Objective: To determine whether the addition of dapagliflozin, an SGLT-2 inhibitor, to standard intensive care unit (ICU) care improves outcomes in a critically ill population with acute organ dysfunction.
Design, Setting, And Participants: Multicenter, randomized, open-label, clinical trial conducted at 22 ICUs in Brazil.
Introduction: , an important cattle ectoparasite, is responsible for a substantial negative impact on the economy due to productivity loss. The emergence of resistance to widely used commercial acaricides has sparked efforts to explore alternative products for tick control.
Methods: To address this challenge, innovative solutions targeting essential tick enzymes, like glutathione S-transferase (GST), have gained attention.
The number of Americans with multiple jobs is increasing and multiple jobholders work more hours per week. However, the associations between multiple jobholding and hypertension are unknown. The aim of this study was to examine the associations of multiple jobholding with hypertension and determine whether weekly working hours moderated this association.
