Antimicrobial therapy for water-associated wound infections in a disaster setting: gram-negative bacilli in an aquatic environment and lessons from Banda Aceh.

Introduction: As members of the Japan Disaster Relief (JDR) team in Banda Aceh, three of the authors treated 1,891 patients following the tsunami of 2004. Of the 367 cases with traumatic injuries, 216 cases required antimicrobial therapy. The medical services were continued by the Japan Self-Defense (JSD) Medical Team until mid-March 2005.

Assessment of radiographic factors affecting surgical exposure and orthodontic alignment of impacted canines of the palate: a 15-year retrospective study.

Objective: Impacted canines require a combination of both surgical and orthodontic management. In this study, patients treated for bone-impacted canines of the hard palatal were evaluated to assess which radiographic factors influenced the feasibility to move impacted maxillary permanent canines from the hard palate into the alveolar arch.

Materials And Methods: Eighty patients aged 12 to 24 (average 16 years) were treated surgically and orthodontically to align 146 bone-impacted canines of the hard palate (from 1994 to 2008).

Alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma of the left hand with bilateral breast metastases in an adolescent female.

Rhabdomyosarcoma is a common extramammary malignancy in pediatric age groups, but it rarely metastasizes to the breast. Breast rhabdomyosarcomas are commonly metastatic, with possible primary locations at the head and neck, trunk, extremities, retroperitoneum and perianal region. We report a case of primary alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma of the upper extremities in a 17-year-old adolescent female who presented with bilateral lower limb weakness and bilateral breast lumps.

The distribution and coexistence of some wild plants in relation to mineral nutrient availability in a high sodium polluted site in central Sudan.

The factors affecting the distribution and coexistence of Cyperus laevigatus, Typha angustata and Paspalum viginatum, in a high sodium polluted site in central Sudan, were investigated. The high sodium content of the site was mainly due to effluents from a near by textile factory where high quantities of Na compounds, like: NaOH, Na2CO3, Na2SiO3 and NaHCO3 were used in the textile processes. The investigation was carried out by chemical analysis of soil and plant samples and computation of correlation coefficients between soil nutrients and ion uptake by the investigated plants.

Seroprevalence of toxoplasmosis among migrant workers from different Asian countries working in Malaysia.

A serologic study of Toxoplasma antibodies among 501 foreign migrant workers in Malaysia was conducted in a plantation and detention camp. The highest prevalence rate of 46.2% was among Nepalese workers.

Quality control chart method for analyzing PEF variability in occupational asthma.

Background: Asthma is the most common occupational respiratory disorder in the industrialized world. In this research we investigated the effectiveness of quality control chart as a method to explore the work-relatedness of asthma using peak expiratory flow (PEF) as the variable of interest.

Method: PEF measurements were recorded from several workers suspected of having occupational asthma.

Modulation of formalin-induced fos-like immunoreactivity in the spinal cord by swim stress-induced analgesia, morphine and ketamine.

Induction of c-fos in the spinal cord due to pain is well established. This study aims to look at the effects of acute swim stress on Fos-like immunoreactivity (FLI) induced by formalin and how it is modulated by ketamine and morphine. Acutely-stressed and non-stressed adult male Sprague Dawley rats were pretreated with intraperitoneal injection of ketamine 5 mg/kg (Ketava, Atlantic Lab), morphine 10 mg/kg (Rhotard, Custom Pharmaceutical), or saline, 5 minutes prior to experimentation.

Risk factors for wound complication in pilonidal sinus procedures.

Background: Pilonidal disease is a common condition among young people. Complicated pilonidal surgical wounds are associated with considerable morbidity, including chronic sacral wound, loss of work time, and lifestyle limitation. The aim of our study is to report our experience with Karydakis procedure and explore the risk factors associated with infection and poor healing in pilonidal operation.

Cervical radiculopathy secondary to Hodgkin's lymphoma.

Background: Spinal cord/root compression is a rare complication of HL and usually seen in the setting of progressive, advanced disease. It is extremely rare to occur as an initial presentation of HL. We report a case of HL presented with bilateral cervical radiculopathy.

Metastatic penile cancer presenting as hypercalcemia and pathological fracture of the humerus: a rare event.

Distant haematogenous metastasis in penile cancer is rare. A patient who had total penectomy and bilateral inguinal lymphadenectomy for penile cancer but later presented with hypercalcemia of malignancy and pathological fracture of the humerus is reported.

Membranous glomerulonephritis (MGN) is one of the common forms of nephrotic syndrome in the adult population. The majority of MGN are idiopathic, but the secondary forms can be seen in the setting of autoimmune disease, neoplasia, infection and following exposure to certain therapeutic agents. Histologically, MGN is an immunologically mediated disease in which immune complexes deposit in the subepithelial space.

Cervical carcinoma is the second leading cancer in women in Malaysia, after breast cancer. Human papillomavirus (HPV) has been implicated in the development of dysplasia or cervical intraepithelial neoplasia and progression to squamous cell carcinoma. Because of the confinement of the human papillomavirus infection within the epithelial layer, the presence of dentritic cells or Langerhans cells in epithelial layer of the ectocervix is paramount in producing immune response.

Organ culture studies on the development of mouse embryo limb buds under EMF influence.

Purpose: To investigate the effects of an electromagnetic field (EMF) on limb bud development in vitro, an organ culture system was applied.

Materials And Methods: Three test groups of amputated mouse limb buds included the experimental (E) group which received EMF (50 Hz/13.1 mT, for 2 h), a sham (Sh) group exposed to no EMF treatment and the control (C) group.

Background: Septal hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (sHCM) is a characteristic anomaly of the infant of diabetic mother (IDM). Insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) has been identified as a mediator of tissue overgrowth and we have previously shown that maternal IGF-1 levels were significantly elevated among neonates with asymmetrical sHCM. IGF-1 does not cross the placenta; it exerts physiologic action through binding to the IGF-1 receptor (IGF-1R).

Susceptibility patterns and cross-resistance of antibiotics against Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolated from burn patients in the South of Iran.
