This study investigates the influence of various in-process cooling techniques on the microstructural characteristics and mechanical properties of the friction stir-welded AA-2219-T6 alloy. The in-process cooling methods used include normal air, dry fan, an oil-water mixture (20:80), and water. The primary objective is to determine the optimal cooling strategy for enhancing the quality of the weldment.

In this paper, the Electron Beam Welding (EBW) was used to join thin plates of low-nickel nitrogen-strengthened austenitic stainless steel (LNiASS), a material valued for its superior mechanical properties and cost-effectiveness. Traditional welding techniques often lead to issues such as hot cracking, reduced toughness, and undesirable microstructures. The objective was to address these challenges using EB·W.

As compared to traditional fusion welding processes, electron beam welding (EBW) is known to produce structurally robust microstructures and narrow heat-affected zone (HAZ) in metals. The process becomes more significant for the tempered alloys vulnerable to heat exposure. In the present investigation, Al 2219-T6 alloy was joined using the EBW process.
