Ramus frame dental implants were retrospectively studied in 360 adults with severely atrophic edentulous mandibles. Patient records up to 12 years post-treatment were independently reviewed after a single clinician surgically placed titanium long-arm ("Tatum") ramus frame implants and immediately loaded them with a mandibular overdenture. A total of 11 ramus frames were removed at 19 to 109 months post-treatment, mostly due to supramucosal bar fracture (N = 6) or mobility (N = 3).

This study examined the effects of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and arachidonic acid (AA) on inflammation mediators during osteoblastogenesis, in terms of modulation of the cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 and the inducible nitric oxide (NO) synthase (iNOS) pathways. We hypothesized that n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) would reduce the production of inflammation mediators, including prostaglandin E(2) (PGE(2)) and NO, and related mRNA gene expression during osteoblastogenesis. Using characters from mitochondrial DNA to construct maximum parsimony and maximum likelihood trees, we performed a phylogenetic analysis on representative species of 14 genera: 12 that belong to the treefrog family Rhacophoridae and two, Amolops and Rana, that are not rhacophorids. Our results support a phylogenetic hypothesis that depicts a monophyletic family Rhacophoridae. In this family, the Malagasy genera Aglyptodactylus, Boophis, Mantella, and Mantidactylus form a well-supported sister clade to all other rhacophorid genera, and Mantella is the sister taxon to Mantidactylus.

Chronic beryllium disease (CBD) is associated with the allelic substitution of a Glu69 in the HLA-DPB1 gene. Although up to 97% of CBD patients may have the Glu69 marker, about 30-45% of beryllium-exposed, unaffected individuals carry the same marker. Because CBD occurs in only 1-6% of exposed workers, the presence of Glu69 does not appear to be the sole genetic factor underlying the disease development.

Seven novel microsatellite markers have been developed from a new cosmid library constructed from flow-sorted human Y chromosomes. These microsatellites are tetranucleotide GATA repeats and are polymorphic among unrelated individuals. Five of the seven markers are male-specific, with no PCR product being generated from female DNA.

The shape, quantity, and quality of bone in the mandible and maxilla are significant factors in deciding which implant options are possible. An understanding of the importance of each of these factors is necessary for the successful diagnosis of edentulous and partially edentulous arches and for optimum use of the many devices and concepts being promoted to the profession and the public. This paper will discuss the differences between the bone of the mandible and the maxilla and between the dentulous and edentulous areas and how these affect implant treatment.
