A Novel Filtration Membrane for Clustered Circulating Tumor Cell Extraction: A Prospective Feasibility Study.

Background/aim: Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) have garnered attention as biomarkers for therapeutic response and prognosis in malignant neoplasms. Nonetheless, existing literature predominantly relies on surrogate markers of tumor cells or focuses on single-cell CTC, failing to adequately address the challenge of detecting cluster-forming CTCs, which bear considerable prognostic implications. This prospective study aims to validate the efficacy of a novel filtration membrane, namely Soft Micro Pore Filter (S-MPF), for rare cell recovery in detecting CTCs through the analysis of clinical samples.

Partitioning the biodiversity effects on productivity into density and size components.

Plant density and size - two factors that represent plant survival and growth - are key determinants of yield but have rarely been analysed explicitly in the context of biodiversity-productivity relationships. Here, we derive equations to partition the net, complementarity and selection effects of biodiversity into additive components that reflect diversity-induced changes in plant density and size. Applications of the new method to empirical datasets reveal contrasting ways in which plant density and size regulate yield in species mixtures.

Isolated bilateral hypoglossal nerve paralysis following an atlanto-occipital dislocation: A case report.

The present report highlights a case of successful treatment of an 11-year-old male patient who presented with an atlanto-occipital dislocation and multiple fractures of the forearm, pelvis, and lower leg because of a fall. The patient experienced dysarthria and paralysis of the tongue, which became completely immobile and could not be moved from side to side, impeding speech. The patient also experienced dysphagia due to the inability to propel food toward the pharynx and chewing attempts resulted in scattering of food residue throughout the oral cavity.

Verification of A New Filter for Isolation of Circulating Tumor Cells by Only Blood Filtration.

Background/aim: Since circulating tumor cells (CTCs) are precursors of metastatic lesions, extracting CTCs from whole blood is useful in obtaining information for cancer treatment. One of the CTC isolation methods is the size selection method; however, since the conventional methods are expensive and cumbersome, we developed an affordable and simple filter, whose usefulness is verified in this study.

Background: Symptomatic vasospasm (SVS) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), and serum sodium frequently decreases before SVS. Serum sodium changes might be regulated by sodium metabolism-related hormones. This multi-institutional prospective cohort study therefore investigated the measurement of sodium metabolism-related hormones to elucidate the pathophysiology of serum sodium changes in SAH.

Here, we report the case of a patient with transient prosopagnosia associated with brain metastasis from epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)-mutated lung adenocarcinoma who was treated with tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs).

Introduction: This study aimed to determine the causes of disruption of the three-dimensional architecture of endometrial glands prepared using BD SurePath™ liquid-based cytology (SP-LBC) reagents. One sample preparation method for endometrial cytology is presented in which this three-dimensional architecture can be retained.

Methods: SP-LBC specimens were prepared by the following three methods: (1) using the BD PrepMate (PrepMate) System after cellular fixation for 1-6 h (method A); (2) without using the PrepMate System after cellular fixation for 1-6 h (method B); and (3) using the PrepMate System after cellular fixation for at least 18 h (method C).

An Autopsy Confirmed Neuromyelitis Optica Spectrum Disorder with Extensive Brain White Matter Lesion and Optic Neuritis but Intact Spinal Cord, Clinically Mimicking a Secondary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis-like Course.

A 57-year-old woman presented with optic neuritis with repeated clinical symptoms of focal demyelination of the cerebral white matter and brain stem for 14 years. At the end of the patient's course, the clinical signs mimicked secondary progressive multiple sclerosis, but whether it was caused by interferon administration or neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSD) - or a combination of both or others - was unclear. Histopathological findings indicated the etiology to be NMOSD, with no apparent plaque in spinal cord specimens.

Background: The use of Kampo medications (Japanese traditional herbal medications) is common in Japan. However, some Kampo medications may cause heart failure. Given that the incidence of heart failure has increased in past decades, investigating the prevalence of the use of Kampo medications that may cause heart failure in patients with acute heart failure is important.

No studies to investigate the effect of a deprescribing intervention on the occurrence of potential prescribing omissions (PPOs) among elderly patients with polypharmacy have been conducted. Therefore, the effect of deprescribing on PPOs among elderly patients with polypharmacy was investigated. All 121 consecutive elderly patients who received in-hospital deprescribing interventions were evaluated.

Temporal changes in spatial variation: partitioning the extinction and colonisation components of beta diversity.

The last two decades have witnessed unprecedented changes in beta diversity, the spatial variation in species composition, from local to global scales. However, analytical challenges have hampered empirical ecologists from quantifying the extinction and colonisation processes behind these changing beta diversity patterns. Here, we develop a novel numerical method to additively partition the temporal changes in beta diversity into components that reflect local extinctions and colonisations.

RGB-color forward-viewing spectrally encoded endoscope using three orders of diffraction.

Spectrally encoded endoscopy (SEE) is an ultra-miniature endoscopy technology that encodes each spatial location on the sample with a different wavelength. One challenge in SEE is achieving color imaging with a small probe. We present a novel SEE probe that is capable of conducting real-time RGB imaging using three diffraction orders (6th order diffraction of the blue spectrum, 5th of green, and 4th of red).

Regulation of hepatic oxidative stress by voltage-gated proton channels (Hv1/VSOP) in Kupffer cells and its potential relationship with glucose metabolism.

Voltage-gated proton channels (Hv1/VSOP), encoded by Hvcn1, are important regulator of reactive oxygen species (ROS) production in many types of immune cells. While in vitro studies indicate that Hv1/VSOP regulates ROS production by maintaining pH homeostasis, there are few studies investigating the functional importance of Hv1/VSOP in vivo. In the present study, we first show that Hv1/VSOP is functionally expressed in liver resident macrophage, Kupffer cells, regulating the hepatic oxidative stress in vivo.

Partitioning the colonization and extinction components of beta diversity across disturbance gradients.

Changes in species diversity often result from species losses and gains. The dynamic nature of beta diversity (spatial variation in species composition) that derives from such temporal species turnover, however, has received relatively little attention. Here, we disentangled extinction and colonization components of beta diversity by using the sets of species that went locally extinct and that newly colonized the study sites.

A Case of Anti-CRMP5 Paraneoplastic Neurological Syndrome Induced by Atezolizumab for Small Cell Lung Cancer.

We herein report a 76-year-old man who developed irritability and forgetfulness 5 months after the introduction of atezolizumab for the treatment of small cell lung cancer (SCLC). Brain magnetic resonance imaging showed lesions of the striatum, and an investigation of the serum revealed a high titer of anti-CRMP5 antibody. After stopping atezolizumab and starting steroid pulse therapy, these clinical features improved.

Urbanization and plant invasion alter the structure of litter microarthropod communities.

Anthropogenic activity underpins the creation of urban ecosystems, often with introduced or invasive species playing a large role in structuring ecological communities. While the effects of urbanization on charismatic taxa such as birds, bees or butterflies have received much attention, the impacts on small and inconspicuous organisms remain poorly understood. Here, we assess how the community structure of leaf litter-inhabiting microarthropods in city parks varies along an urbanization gradient in Toronto, Canada.
