Orchids parasitically depend on external nutrients from mycorrhizal fungi for seed germination. Previous findings suggest that orchids utilize a genetic system of mutualistic arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) symbiosis, in which the plant hormone gibberellin (GA) negatively affects fungal colonization and development, to establish parasitic symbiosis. Although GA generally promotes seed germination in photosynthetic plants, previous studies have reported low sensitivity of GA in seed germination of mycoheterotrophic orchids where mycorrhizal symbiosis occurs concurrently.

Insulin signaling often plays a role in the regulation of cancer, including tumor initiation, progression, and response to treatment. In addition, the insulin-regulated PI3K-Akt-mTOR pathway plays an important role in the regulation of islet cell proliferation, and this pathway is hyperactivated in human non-functional pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (PanNETs). We, therefore, investigated the effect of a very low carbohydrate diet (ketogenic diet) on a mouse model that develops non-functional PanNETs to ask how reduced PI3K-Akt-mTOR signaling might affect the development and progression of non-functional PanNET.

Resistance to chemoradiotherapy is the main cause of cancer treatment failure. Osteocytes, osteoblasts (bone-forming cells), and osteoclasts (bone-resorbing cells) are the primary types of cells that regulate bone metabolism in mammals. Sclerostin produced in bone cells activates osteoclasts, inhibiting bone formation; excess production of sclerostin, therefore, leads to the loss of bone mass. Astronauts are inevitably exposed to two major risks during space flight, microgravity and radiation.
