Introduction: Macrophages play a vital role in the development of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Macrophages are functionally and phenotypically heterogeneous immune cells and commonly exist in two distinct or polarized subsets: pro-inflammatory M1 and anti-inflammatory M2 phenotypes. Previous reports suggest that stimulation of α7 or α4β2 nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) in macrophages leads to an anti-inflammatory response.
