Xylitol is a highly demanded polyol in the food, pharmaceutical, and chemical industries. However, its current production methods are considered energy-intensive, require the use of hazardous chemical catalysts, and depend on complex and costly equipment. The biotechnological route of xylitol production is proposed as a sustainable alternative, but it still requires process improvements, such as enhanced fermentation capabilities, to be economically competitive.

Measurement properties of the Brazilian-Portuguese version of the PROMIS-29 questionnaire and the Impact Score in patients with chronic low back pain.

Background: A task force from the US National Institute of Health aimed to establish parameters for surveys with patients with chronic low back pain (LBP) by recommending the use of the Patient-Reported Outcome Measurement Information System 29-item (PROMIS-29) questionnaire and the stratification according to the Impact Score. We aimed to assess the internal consistency, reliability, measurement error, construct validity and responsiveness of the Brazilian-Portuguese version of the PROMIS-29 questionnaire (version 2.1) and the Impact Score in patients with chronic LBP.

Trio-based whole exome sequencing in patients with ectopic posterior pituitary.

Introduction: Ectopic posterior pituitary (EPP) is a rare congenital abnormality, sometimes associated with other midline defects, such as pituitary stalk interruption syndrome (PSIS), in which thin or absent pituitary stalk and anterior pituitary hypoplasia are combined to EPP. Most cases are sporadic, with few reports of familial cases, and many congenital hypopituitarism (CH) cases remain unsolved.

Objective: To search for candidate genes associated with this condition, we performed trio-based whole-exome sequencing (WES) on patients with EPP, including two familial cases.

Herbicide Leaching in Soil with Different Properties: Perspectives from Commercial Formulations and Analytical Standards.

The leaching of herbicides into the soil is essential to control germinating seeds and parts of vegetative weeds. However, herbicide transportation to deeper soil layers can result in groundwater contamination and, consequently, environmental issues. In this research, our objective was to investigate differences in herbicide leaching between commercial formulations and analytical standards using three different soils.

New Insights into Cutaneous Asepsis: Synergism between Pfaffia and Rosemary Extracts.

(1) Background: In hospitals, medical and dental clinics, antiseptics or disinfectants play an essential role in the control of nosocomial infections. This study aimed to evaluate and glycolic extracts regarding: (I) their antimicrobial action on planktonic and biofilm (monotypic and cutaneous biofilm model-, and ); and (II) their cytotoxicity on human keratinocytes (HaCaT). Prognosis of a new episode of low-back pain in a community inception cohort.

Background: Most studies investigating the prognosis of low back pain (LBP) enrol people presenting for care, rather than all people who have an episode of LBP. We aimed to describe the prognosis of an acute episode of LBP in a community inception cohort.

Methods: We used data from two previous studies investigating recurrence of LBP.

Herbicide mixtures have often been used to control weeds in crops worldwide, but the behavior of these mixtures in the environment is still poorly understood. Laboratory and greenhouse tests have been conducted to study the interaction of the herbicides diuron, hexazinone, and sulfometuron-methyl which have been applied alone and in binary and ternary mixtures in the processes of sorption, desorption, half-life, and leaching in the soil. A new index of the risk of leaching of these herbicides has also been proposed.

The speed of the sorption reaction alters the bioavailability of herbicides in the soil and, consequently, the transport and transformation processes of the molecule in the environment. In this research, the sorption kinetics of sulfometuron-methyl was evaluated in different Brazilian soils in which sugarcane is grown. The sorption speed was carried out by the batch equilibrium method.

What triggers an episode of acute low back pain? A protocol of a replication case-crossover study.

Objective: To describe all the procedures of a study that will replicate a previous case-crossover study investigating physical and psychosocial transient exposure risk factors for triggering an episode of acute non-specific low back pain (LBP) at emergency departments in an emerging country.

Methods: This case-crossover study will recruit 350 patients, aged between 18 and 80 years, with a new episode of acute non-specific LBP seeking care at emergency departments from public hospitals in Brazil. We will collect information about exposure to a range of physical (eg, awkward postures, lifting children or animals, vigorous physical activity) and psychosocial triggers (eg, distraction, tiredness, alcohol consumption) that were examined in the previous study.
