Obligate anaerobic bacteria in genus are among the most dominant taxa in the colon of healthy individuals and contribute to intestinal homeostasis. A decline in the abundance of this genus is associated with the occurrence of various gastrointestinal disorders, including inflammatory bowel diseases. In the colon, these diseases are accompanied by an imbalance between the generation and elimination of reactive oxygen species (ROS), and oxidative stress is closely linked to disruptions in anaerobiosis.

Article Synopsis
  • An outbreak of VIM-1-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae in Spain posed a significant threat to hospitals, prompting a detailed genomic study of 18 isolates between 2005 and 2007.
  • The majority of isolates were clonal (17 ST39), while one acquired a plasmid responsible for antibiotic resistance, exhibiting nearly universal resistance to antibiotics.
  • Although no evidence of widespread distribution of this strain was found, the VIM-1 plasmid was present in various Enterobacterales species, indicating localized concerns about antibiotic resistance evolution.
