A Case of Parasitic Leiomyoma in the Sigmoid Mesentery Following Total Laparoscopic Hysterectomy.

Parasitic leiomyoma (PL) develops when fragments of a morcellated uterine leiomyoma, during procedures such as laparoscopic myomectomy (LM) or total laparoscopic hysterectomy (TLH), adhere to other tissues. We recently encountered a case where PL developed in the mesentery of the sigmoid colon following TLH. A 51-year-old woman had previously undergone TLH with in-abdominal morcellation.

Clinical Usefulness of a Short Version of the Internet Addiction Test to Screen for Probable Internet Addiction in Adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Internet addiction (IA) is defined as the condition of being addicted to all sorts of activities on the Internet. Individuals with neurodevelopmental disorders, including autism spectrum disorder (ASD), may be susceptible to IA. Elective laparoscopic colectomy in a patient 3 weeks after coronavirus disease 2019 infection: a case report.

Background: According to previous reports, surgery is not recommended until at least 4 weeks after the symptoms of coronavirus disease 2019 resolve. However, strong evidence has not been established regarding the optimal timing and preoperative examination for elective laparoscopic colectomy for colorectal cancer in individuals with a previous coronavirus disease 2019 infection.

Case Presentation: A 63-year-old Asian man underwent elective laparoscopic colectomy for sigmoid colon cancer 3 weeks after asymptomatic coronavirus disease 2019.

The Efficacy of Early Start Denver Model Intervention in Young Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder Within Japan: A Preliminary Study.

Objectives: Among the many intervention programs for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), the Early Start Denver Model (ESDM) is one of the few approaches that has succeeded in demonstrating clinical efficacy in randomized control trials. Here, we inves-tigate the clinical efficacy of ESDM intervention in young children with ASD in a community setting within Japan.

Methods: All subjects were children with ASD who received ESDM intervention during the study period.

Comparative Analysis of Microbial Communities in Fronds and Roots of Three Duckweed Species: Spirodela polyrhiza, Lemna minor, and Lemna aequinoctialis.

The microbial communities inhabiting the fronds of duckweeds have not been investigated in as much detail as those on the roots. We herein examined the microbial communities in three duckweed species using 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing and compared them to those on the roots. The microbial compositions of the fronds were distinct from those of the roots in the three species.

Operation Mechanism of GaN-based Transistors Elucidated by Element-Specific X-ray Nanospectroscopy.

With the rapid depletion of communication-frequency resources, mainly due to the explosive spread of information communication devices for the internet of things, GaN-based high-frequency high-power transistors (GaN-HEMTs) have attracted considerable interest as one of the key devices that can operate in the high-frequency millimeter-wave band. However, GaN-HEMT operation is destabilized by current collapse phenomena arising from surface electron trapping (SET), which has not been fully understood thus far. Here, we conduct quantitative mechanistic studies on SET in GaN-HEMTs by applying element- and site-specific photoelectron nanospectroscopy to a GaN-HEMT device under operation.

Internet Addiction and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Traits among Female College Students in Japan.

Objectives: Previous studies have reported that internet addiction (IA) is associated with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) consistently. However, in terms of gender, there are controversial findings. We aimed to investigate the relation between IA and self-acknowledged ADHD traits among female college students in Japan.

Previously undiagnosed hereditary spherocytosis in a patient with jaundice and pyelonephritis: a case report.

Background: Hereditary spherocytosis is autosomal dominant inherited extravascular hemolytic disorder and is the commonest cause of inherited hemolysis in northern Europe and the United States. The classical clinical features of hereditary spherocytosis are anemia, jaundice, and splenomegaly. However, all of these classical features are not always revealed in the case of mild hemolysis or when hemolysis is well compensated.

Cut endotracheal tube for endoscopic removal of an ingested push-through pack.

A 52-year-old female presented to our clinic after accidentally ingesting a push-through pack (PTP). After determining that the PTP was present in the stomach, we successfully and safely removed it endoscopically by using a handmade endoscopic hood fashioned from a cut endotracheal tube. Foreign body ingestion is a common clinical problem, and most ingested foreign bodies pass spontaneously.

Ortholog-Finder: A Tool for Constructing an Ortholog Data Set.

Orthologs are widely used for phylogenetic analysis of species; however, identifying genuine orthologs among distantly related species is challenging, because genes obtained through horizontal gene transfer (HGT) and out-paralogs derived from gene duplication before speciation are often present among the predicted orthologs. We developed a program, "Ortholog-Finder," to obtain ortholog data sets for performing phylogenetic analysis by using all open-reading frame data of species. The program includes five processes for minimizing the effects of HGT and out-paralogs in phylogeny construction: 1) HGT filtering: Genes derived from HGT could be detected and deleted from the initial sequence data set by examining their base compositions.

Risk Factors for Second Eye Involvement in Eyes with Unilateral Polypoidal Choroidal Vasculopathy.

Purpose: To investigate risk factors associated with developing polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV) lesions in the unaffected fellow eye of patients with unilateral PCV.

Methods: We studied 179 patients with initial unilateral PCV who were followed up for a period of 24 months or longer to monitor for second eye involvement. All patients underwent genotyping for CFH I62V (rs800292) and ARMS2 A69S (rs10490924) using TaqMan technology.

Aqueous humor cytokine levels in patients with polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy and neovascular age-related macular degeneration.

Purpose: To investigate the possible roles of various cytokines or growth factors in the pathogenesis of exudative age-related macular degeneration (AMD) by comparing aqueous humor levels of 14 cytokines between eyes with polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV) and those with neovascular AMD.

Methods: Forty eyes from 40 patients with treatment-naïve exudative AMD consisting of 18 eyes with neovascular AMD and 22 eyes with PCV were studied. Twenty eyes from 20 patients with no retinal pathology who underwent cataract surgery served as controls.

The chicken domestication process represents a typical model of artificial selection, and gives significant insight into the general understanding of the influence of artificial selection on recognizable phenotypes. Two Japanese domesticated chicken varieties, the fighting cock (Shamo) and the long-crowing chicken (Naganakidori), have been selectively bred for dramatically different phenotypes. The former has been selected exclusively for aggressiveness and the latter for long crowing with an obedient sitting posture.

Divergence of East Asians and Europeans estimated using male- and female-specific genetic markers.

To study the male and female lineages of East Asian and European humans, we have sequenced 25 short tandem repeat markers on 453 Y-chromosomes and collected sequences of 72 complete mitochondrial genomes to construct independent phylogenetic trees for male and female lineages. The results indicate that East Asian individuals fall into two clades, one that includes East Asian individuals only and a second that contains East Asian and European individuals. Surprisingly, the European individuals did not form an independent clade, but branched within in the East Asians.

Age-dependent changes in the functions and compositions of photosynthetic complexes in the thylakoid membranes of Arabidopsis thaliana.

Photosynthetic complexes in the thylakoid membrane of plant leaves primarily function as energy-harvesting machinery during the growth period. However, leaves undergo developmental and functional transitions along aging and, at the senescence stage, these complexes become major sources for nutrients to be remobilized to other organs such as developing seeds. Purpose: To describe macular slippage toward the optic disc after macular hole surgery with internal limiting membrane (ILM) peeling.

Materials And Methods: A total of 27 eyes of 27 patients with idiopathic macular hole were included in this retrospective study. The fovea-to-disc distance (FDD) was measured from digital color fundus images before and at least six months after surgery.

Convergent stereoselective synthesis of multiple sulfated GlcNα(1,4)GlcAβ(1,4) dodecasaccharides.

In this paper, we describe an effective method for the elongation of a GlcNα(1,4)GlcAβ(1,4) sequence using a GlcNTrocα(1,4)GlcA disaccharide unit and the synthesis of the N- and/or O-sulfated GlcNα(1,4)GlcAβ(1,4) oligosaccharides. N-Troc protection of GlcNα(1,4)GlcA units was effective for the synthesis of the GlcNα(1,4)GlcAβ(1,4) oligosaccharides in comparison with the azido substituent. The GlcNα(1,4)GlcAβ(1,4) dodecasaccharide was successfully prepared by the direct β-selective glycosidation of glucuronate in the GlcNα(1,4)GlcAβ(1,4)GlcNα(1,4)GlcAβ(1,4) tetrasaccharide.

Introduction: Recent studies show that a clinical pathway (CP) optimizes pain management in palliative care; however, studies on CPs in home palliative care, especially in remote locations, are scarce. Physicians performing palliative care in remote areas frequently face characteristic difficulties. The CP is an effective tool to overcome these difficulties.
