Pleiotropic effects of melanin pigmentation: haemoparasite infection intensity but not telomere length is associated with plumage morph in black sparrowhawks.

There is increasing recognition of the potential pleiotropic effects of melanin pigmentation, particularly on immunity, with reports of variation in haemoparasite infection intensity and immune responses between the morphs of colour-polymorphic bird species. In a population of the black sparrowhawk () in western South Africa, light morphs have a higher haemoparasite infection intensity, but no physiological effects of this are apparent. Here, we investigate the possible effects of haemoparasite infection on telomere length in this species and explore whether relative telomere length is associated with either plumage morph or sex.

Magnetic resonance imaging-based radiomics analysis of the differential diagnosis of ovarian clear cell carcinoma and endometrioid carcinoma: a retrospective study.

Purpose: To retrospectively evaluate the diagnostic potential of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based features and radiomics analysis (RA)-based features for discriminating ovarian clear cell carcinoma (CCC) from endometrioid carcinoma (EC).

In the course of SRY-box transcription factor 6 (SOX6) expression profiling in human embryonic tissue, SOX 6 was found to be highly expressed in the notochord, based on the findings of immunohistochemistry (IHC). Sox6 is also expressed in the neural tube and the distribution of SOX6 is located in the ventral and dorsal zones of the neural tube. In contrast to the findings that SOX6-positive cells were located on the floor plate of the neural tube, OLIG2- and NKX2.

The rapid development of wind energy in southern Africa represents an additional threat to the already fragile populations of African vultures. The distribution of the vulnerable Cape Vulture Gyps coprotheres overlaps considerably with wind energy development areas in South Africa, creating conflicts that can hinder both vulture conservation and sustainable energy development. To help address this conflict and aid in the safe placement of wind energy facilities, we map the utilization distribution (UD) of this species across its distributional range.

Small intestinal bleeding and stricture caused by Meckel's diverticulum.

A 44-year-old man presented to our hospital with lower gastrointestinal bleeding. We performed balloon-assisted enteroscopy, which revealed diverticulum and stricture at the ileum. The patient underwent segmental small bowel resection and diagnosed with Meckel's diverticulum.

Cs-RHO Goes from Worst to Best as Water Enhances Equilibrium CO Adsorption via Phase Change.

The strong affinity of water to zeolite adsorbents has made adsorption of CO from humid gas mixtures such as flue gas nearly impossible under equilibrated conditions. Here, in this manuscript, we describe a unique cooperative adsorption mechanism between HO and Cs cations on Cs-RHO zeolite, which actually facilitates the equilibrium adsorption of CO under humid conditions. Our data demonstrate that, at a relative humidity of 5%, Cs-RHO adsorbs 3-fold higher amounts of CO relative to dry conditions, at a temperature of 30 °C and CO pressure of 1 bar.

Introduction: Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs), particularly anti-PD-1 antibody, have dramatically changed cancer treatment; however, fatal immune-related adverse events (irAEs) can develop. Here, we describe a severe case of sclerosing cholangitis-like irAE. We report the use of 3 immunosuppressive agents that resulted in the death of the patient due to treatment inefficacy.

Fabrication of biodegradable particles with tunable morphologies by the addition of resveratrol to oil in water emulsions.

Particles for biomedical applications can be produced by emulsifying biocompatible polymers dissolved in an organic solvent in water. The emulsion is then transferred to an extraction bath that removes the solvent from the dispersed droplets, which leads to polymer precipitation and particle formation. Typically, the particles are smooth and spherical, likely because the droplets remain fluid throughout the solvent extraction process allowing minimization of surface area as the volume decreases.

Selective Catalytic Chemistry at Rhodium(II) Nodes in Bimetallic Metal-Organic Frameworks.

We report the first study of a gas-phase reaction catalyzed by highly dispersed sites at the metal nodes of a crystalline metal-organic framework (MOF). Specifically, CuRhBTC (BTC =benzenetricarboxylate) exhibited hydrogenation activity, while other isostructural monometallic and bimetallic MOFs did not. Our multi-technique characterization identifies the oxidation state of Rh in CuRhBTC as +2, which is a Rh oxidation state that has not previously been observed for crystalline MOF metal nodes.

[A Case of Renal Cell Carcinoma Recurrence in the Ureteral Stump, 8 Years after Radical Nephrectomy].

A 62-year-old woman underwent laparoscopic radial nephrectomy for the left renal cell carcinoma in September 2008. In July2016, the patient developed asymptomatic gross hematuria. One hypothesis proposes that different morphs are adapted to different ambient light conditions, with lighter morphs having a selective advantage in bright conditions and darker morphs having advantages in darker conditions. The mechanism for this advantage is proposed to be through enhanced crypsis via background-matching.
