Thermophilic anaerobic digestion (TAD) provides a promising solution for sustainable high-strength waste treatment due to its enhanced methane-rich biogas recovery. However, high organic loading rates (OLR) exceeding 3.0 kgCOD/m/day and short hydraulic retention times (HRT) below 10 days pose challenges in waste-to-energy conversion during TAD, stemming from volatile fatty acids (VFAs) accumulation and methanogenesis failure.

The study of medicinal plants, such as the genus (Clusiaceae), in the treatment of non-communicable chronic diseases has aroused the interest of researchers. However, there are no studies in the literature that have investigated the effects of in experimental models of obesity for possible metabolic alterations. Swiss mice receiving a high-fat diet were supplemented with aqueous or ethanolic extract of at doses of 200 or 400 mg/kg/day.

Background: Studies indicate that different parts of Linn have nutritional properties that mean it can be used as an adjuvant for the treatment of various pathologies.

Methods: The fatty acid composition of the oil extracted from the seeds of Linn was evaluated by gas chromatography, and an acute toxicity test was performed. For the experiment, Swiss mice were fed a balanced or high-fat diet and supplemented with saline, soybean oil, olive oil, or papaya seed oil.

Accessible chromatin often represents gene regulatory elements, including promoters and enhancers, essential for gene expression. Assay for Transposase Accessible Chromatin sequencing (ATAC-seq) is one of the most popular techniques to investigate chromatin accessibility across the genome. Here we describe, step by step, a series of optimized experimental methods and bioinformatics pipelines for ATAC-seq analysis.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers assessed immune response profiles in SARS-CoV-2 infected patients by examining 71 biomarkers across different clinical groups: asymptomatic, mild, and severe cases.
  • They found that certain angiogenesis and cardiovascular disease biomarkers were significantly elevated in severe cases compared to the other groups, indicating distinct immune profiles.
  • The study highlights important differences in cytokines and chemokines among patients, providing insights into potential prognostic markers for understanding disease severity in COVID-19 infections.

  • Buriti pulp oil contains beneficial bioactive substances and lipids that may help protect against cardiovascular and inflammatory diseases.
  • In a study with 108 Swiss mice over 90 days, various combinations of buriti oil and olive oil were tested, showing stability and effective metabolic interactions without affecting food intake or weight gain.
  • The strongest cardioprotective effect was seen in the group combining buriti oil and extra virgin olive oil, suggesting that this combination could be a valuable dietary supplement for people.

Article Synopsis
  • Obesity is a chronic health issue linked to serious health problems and global mortality, prompting research on dietary solutions.
  • A study evaluated the effects of lyophilized pulp from a Brazilian palm when added to a high-fat diet in mice over 90 days, testing different concentrations (1%, 2%, 4%).
  • Results showed that 4% pulp improved HDL cholesterol levels and reduced fat deposits in mice compared to those on a high-fat diet alone, highlighting the health benefits of palm pulp’s fibers and monounsaturated fatty acids.

Perianal gland tumors are modified sebaceous glands present in the skin of the perianal region in the dog. Hormonal stimulation may induce hyperplasia of the perianal glands or their neoplastic progression. The presence of androgen (AR) and estrogen (ER) receptors have been demonstrated both in normal perianal glands as well as in perianal tumors.

International migrants are at heightened risk for tuberculosis (TB) disease. Intensified incarceration at international borders may compound population-wide TB risk. However, few studies have investigated the contributions of migration, local transmission, or prisons in driving incident TB at international borders.

During osteopetrosis course, impaired bone remodeling induces skeletal osteosclerosis and abnormally dense bones, which, however, are brittle and susceptible to low-energy fractures. In this study, radiological evaluation and densitometric measurements of several bones of the skeleton in one of the oldest patients in the world suffering from osteopetrosis was presented. : Volumetric bone mineral density measurements of the examined bones in an 80-year-old man were performed using two different quantitative computed tomography techniques.

There are still controversies regarding the correlation between the beneficial effects for health and the administration of isolated compounds or crude extracts in therapeutic applications. , found in the Brazilian Cerrado, demonstrated beneficial effects in metabolic disorders associated with obesity. We investigated the effects of hydroethanolic extract and two isolated substances from the extract (S1 and S2) in a diet-induced obesity (DIO) model.

We studied the changes in morphological, geometric, densitometric, and mechanical parameters of the femur and tibia during 56 D of rearing chickens with different growth rates. Ten femur and tibia were collected from fast-growing chickens (FG) and 2 types of medium-growing chickens (MGH and MGGP) immediately after hatching (0 D) and on 7, 14, 21, 35, 42, 49, and 56 D of life. The bone parameters of chickens across all genetic groups were found to be similar on 0 D, with exceptions of lower percentage contribution of bone weight (BW) in FG chickens (P < 0.

This study was performed to determine morphological, densitometric, mechanical, and elemental characteristics of maxillary teeth in 5-month-old Polish Merino sheep. The total tooth volume (Tvol) was determined using quantitative computed tomography. Micro-computed tomography was used to determine the total enamel volume (Evol), volumetric enamel mineral density, total dentine volume (Dvol), volumetric dentine mineral density, and total tooth enamel and dentine volume (EDvol).

Background/aim: Determination of DNA adduct count was performed in mononuclear cells during antihormonal treatment of perianal gland tumors.

Materials And Methods: Eight- to fifteen-year-old dogs with carcinoma (CAR Group; N=5), epithelioma (EPI Group; N=16) or adenoma (ADE Group; N=24) were used. The control group suffered from perineal hernia or rectal diverticulum (CTR Group; N=25).

Genes involved in sexual reproduction diverge rapidly as a result of reproductive fitness. Here, we identify a novel protein domain in the germline-specific Polycomb protein SCML2 that is required for the establishment of unique gene expression programs after the mitosis-to-meiosis transition in spermatogenesis. We term this novel domain, which is comprised of rapidly evolved, DNA-binding repeat units of 28 amino acids, the SCML2 DNA-binding (SDB) repeats.

Interrelationships between morphological, densitometric, and mechanical properties of deciduous mandibular teeth (incisors, canine, second premolar) were investigated. To perform morphometric, densitometric, and mechanical analyses, teeth were obtained from 5-month-old sheep. Measurements of mean volumetric tooth mineral density and total tooth volume were performed using quantitative computed tomography.

We conducted a population-based study of tuberculosis (TB) from 2009 to 2015 in an indigenous community of Brazil, the largest in the country, to investigate risk factors associated with recent TB transmission. The clinical isolates of were genotyped by IS-RFLP (restriction fragment length polymorphism) and spoligotyping analysis. Among 67 isolates typed by RFLP, 69% fell into fifteen clusters, and 91% of TB cases with shared IS-RFLP pattern were diagnosed within 2 years of another case in the cluster.
