Autoimmune bullous diseases (AIBDs) are characterized by the formation of vesicles, bullous lesions, and mucosal erosions. The autoantibodies target the cellular anchoring structures from the surface of epidermal keratinocyte named desmosomes, leading to a loss of cellular cohesion named acantholysis. AIBDs are classified into intraepidermal or subepidermal types based on clinical features, histological characteristics, and immunofluorescence patterns.

Article Synopsis
  • Burns are a big health problem that can make kids really sick and lead to a long hospital stay.
  • This study looked at 32 kids with serious burns to see how certain body proteins, called adipokines, change over time and relate to their recovery.
  • The results showed that some proteins (like adiponectin, resistin, and leptin) are linked with how bad the burns are, how long kids stay in the hospital, and other important health markers.

Tattooing is the procedure of implanting permanent pigment granules and additives into the dermal layer of the skin, serving various purposes such as decoration, medical identification, or accidental markings. There has been a significant rise in the popularity of decorative tattooing as a form of body art among both teenagers and young adults. Thus, the incidence of tattoos is increasing, with expanding applications such as permanent makeup, scar camouflage, nipple-areola, lips, and eyebrows tattooing, and utilization in oncological radiotherapy such as colon marking.

Background: Informal caregivers (ie, individuals who provide assistance to a known person with health or functional needs, often unpaid) experience high levels of stress. Caregiver stress is associated with negative outcomes for both caregivers and care recipients. Mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) show promise for improving stress, emotional distress, and sleep disturbance in caregivers of persons with Alzheimer disease and related dementias (ADRD).

Background: Young sexual and gender minorities (SGMs) of color may face unique experiences of discrimination based on their intersectional positions (eg, discrimination based on both racial or ethnic identity and sexual identity). Emerging evidence suggests that mindfulness practices may reduce stress from discrimination and improve overall well-being among young SGM. Moreover, the omnipresence of smartphone access among racial or ethnic and sexual minority communities provides a method through which to administer mindfulness-based interventions among young SGMs of color.

Introduction: Many medical schools are moving toward integrated curricula in response to the 2010 Carnegie report. However, there is often apprehension that student performance on standard assessment metrics of medical knowledge acquisition could suffer during the transition period. Therefore, we sought to analyze the impact of curriculum redesign on the medical knowledge acquisition of the transitional cohort, as measured by NBME subject exam scores.

We analyze four-dimensional Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker cosmologies in type IIB, arising from a M-theory dual, and find that the null energy condition (NEC) has to be obeyed by them (except for the negatively curved case) in order for the M-theory action to have a Wilsonian effective description. However, this does not imply that the M-theory metric has to obey the 11D NEC. Thus, we propose a new swampland conjecture-the 4D NEC is a consistency condition for any theory to have a completion within M theory-with an explicit derivation of it for cosmological backgrounds from a top-down perspective.

Introduction: Extensive lower limb traumatic injuries are particularly challenging when they associate skin and soft tissue defects, moreover when the patient is a child. In view of more frequent recommendations and reports of negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) use for severe trauma and extensive soft tissue defects of the lower extremity, we aimed at reviewing the indications and outcomes of this technique in our pediatric plastic surgery department.

Method: We performed a retrospective study for the period 2016-2019, in order to identify patients having suffered injuries of the ankle and foot, for who NPWT was used in the therapeutic protocol.
