The efficacy of ultrasonography in hemodynamically stable children with blunt abdominal trauma: a prospective comparison with computed tomography.

Purpose: In this prospective study we aimed to investigate the diagnostic value of ultrasonography (US) in hemodynamically stable children after blunt abdominal trauma (BAT) using computed tomography (CT) as the gold standard.

Materials And Methods: Between 1997 and 2001, 96 children with BAT were evaluated prospectively. CT was performed first, followed by US.

Clinical value of protein S100 and melanoma-inhibitory activity (MIA) in malignant melanoma.

Serum protein S100 and melanoma-inhibitory protein (MIA) have been described as useful tumor markers for malignant melanoma. In this study, these two serum proteins were compared in 48 patients with melanoma at different stages of disease. Serum concentrations of S100 and MIA were measured by immunoradiometric and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays, respectively.

Epidermoid cyst in the renal pelvis.

Epidermoid cysts are benign cysts localizing rarely in solid organs with an unclear pathogenesis. A 55 years old woman having an epidermoid cyst in the renal pelvis was evaluated according to the literature.

Granulosa cell tumor of the ovary: retrospective analysis of 45 cases.

Adult granulosa cell tumors of the ovary are rare neoplasms, accounting for less than 5% of all ovarian malignancies. In addition to the tumor stage, residual disease, patient age, tumor size, extent of surgery, and also some histologic factors have been reported to be of prognostic importance. Tumor registries were screened for all patients treated between 1979 and 1998 for ovarian tumors at the University of Istanbul.

Traumatic pelvic hydatid cyst rupture: report of a case.

Secondary peritoneal echinococcosis is one of the important complications of cyst hydatid disease. Although many ruptured hydatid cysts of a primary organ have been reported, there is only one case of peritoneal hydatid cyst rupture in the literature. In this case report we present a 25 year-old male patient, who had been operated for hydatid cyst of the liver four years ago and had pelvic hydatid cyst rupture due to blunt abdominal trauma.

Retrovesical soft-tissue metastasis of malignant thymoma: case report.

Malignant thymomas are usually confined to the mediastinum at the time of diagnosis and follow-up. Distant metastasis is distinctly rare. This is the first clinical case report of a thoracic malignant thymoma with distant soft-tissue metastasis that involves the retrovesical area to include the seminal vesicle.

The measurement of the rotational deformities with computed tomography in femoral shaft fractures of the children treated with early spica cast.

Twenty-eight children with femoral shaft fractures, treated with early spica cast, were evaluated with computed tomography (CT), for their femoral shaft rotational deformities. The femoral torsion angles were measured on both sides. If the torsion angle of the fractured side was more than the other side, it was considered as an internal rotational deformity and if it was less, it was considered as an external rotational deformity.

Efficacy of cisplatin and cyclophosphamide combination for recurrent and metastatic carcinoma of the uterine cervix.

The efficacy of a combination of cyclophosphamide and cisplatin in patients with metastatic and recurrent carcinoma of the cervix, was tested. Thirty patients were included in the study. Initially, 27 patients (90%) had received pelvic radiation and intracavitary boost and one patient was additionally given paraaortic radiation.

Combination chemotherapy with docetaxel and irinotecan in metastatic malignant melanoma.

Aim: The aim of the current trial was to assess the efficacy and toxicity of 3-weekly intravenous docetaxel and irinotecan in the treatment of patients with metastatic malignant melanoma.

Materials And Methods: Sixteen patients with no history of previous cytotoxic agents or immunological treatment for advanced disease were treated with docetaxel 50 mg/m2 and irinotecan 150 mg/m2 intravenously over 60 min every 21 days. Prior immunotherapy with interferon and chemotherapy for adjuvant therapies were accepted provided there was a minimum 4-week treatment-free interval.

Evaluation of pulmonary changes due to biomass fuels using high-resolution computed tomography.

Biomass fuels are frequently used in rural areas of the world for cooking and heating frequently. It has been reported that the use of these fuels causes hazardous effects on the lungs. In this study, we evaluated the pulmonary changes due to the use of biomass fuels in a female population that lives in our territory by high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT).

Detection of circulating melanoma cells by a two-marker polymerase chain reaction assay in relation to therapy.

Malignant melanoma is one of the most rapidly increasing cancer types, and patients with metastatic disease have a very poor prognosis. Detection of metastatic melanoma cells in circulation may aid the clinician in assessing tumor progression, metastatic potential, and response to therapy. Tyrosinase is a key enzyme in melanin biosynthesis.

Normal thyroid volume by ultrasonography in healthy children.

With the objective of creating standards for the volume of the thyroid gland by ultrasonography in the 0-16-year age group, thyroid volumes of 302 healthy children (150 boys, 152 girls) were measured by ultrasonography. The transverse (x), sagittal (y) and anteroposterior (z) lengths of the right and left lobes and isthmus were measured. Volumes of these were calculated by the ellipsoid volume formula [V = (pi/6) x x x y x z].

Adjuvant intraperitoneal chemotherapy with cisplatinum, mitoxantrone, 5-fluorouracil, and calcium folinate in patients with gastric cancer: a phase II study.

Gastric carcinoma remains one of the leading causes of cancer-related death in the world. Clinical studies have revealed that approximately two thirds of the patients seek treatment for early recurrence within the abdominal cavity. The aim of this phase II study was to evaluate the toxicity, feasibility, and efficacy of adjuvant intraperitoneal chemotherapy (IPCT) with cisplatin, mitoxantrone, 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), and folinic acid in patients with stage II-III gastric cancer.

Variation of the ulnar variance with powerful grip.

Causal relationships between ulnar variance and wrist disorders are known. Gripping and pronation cause proximal translation of the radius with respect to the ulna, leading to a statistically significant increase in ulnar variance. The purpose of this study was to investigate variation of the ulnar variance with powerful grip.

Anemia in oncology practice: relation to diseases and their therapies.

Anemia is common in patients with cancer and is a frequent complication of myelosuppressive chemotherapy. In this study, we investigated the incidence and severity of chemotherapy-induced anemia caused by the most common chemotherapy regimens, including the new generation of chemotherapeutic agents, used in the treatment of the major nonmyeloid malignancies in adults. Five hundred fifty-two patients with histologically proven carcinoma originating from breast (n = 165), lung (n = 128), colon (n = 75), ovary (n = 84), and malignant lymphoma (n = 100) were included in this study.

Safety of paclitaxel in a patient with ovarian cancer and hyperbilirubinemia due to Rotor's syndrome.

Background: Rotor's syndrome is a rare congenital disorder characterized by functional hyperbilirubinemia. Treatment decision may be challenging in a cancer patient with Rotor's syndrome, since the majority of the antineoplastic agents are metabolized in the liver and excreted via the biliary system. We report the first case of paclitaxel administration in a patient with ovarian cancer and elevated bilirubin levels due to Rotor's syndrome.

Prognostic role of nm23 gene expression in patients with ovarian cancer.

The aim of the study was to define the prognostic role of the metastasis suppressor gene, nm23, in 50 patients with primary ovarian cancer. Immunohistochemical analysis was performed on formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded specimens by the primary nm23 monoclonal antibody (Novocastra, NCL-nm23 clone 37.6).

The role of chemotherapy in malignant mixed mullerian tumors of the female genital tract.

Thirteen patients with malignant mixed mullerian tumor of the female genital tract, treated and followed in our clinic from 1989 to 1999 were retrospectively evaluated. Seven patients (53.8%) with advanced disease or postoperative residual tumor were treated with adjuvant chemotherapy.

Treatment of aggressive non-Hodgkin's lymphoma with dose-intensified epirubicin in combination of cyclophosphamide, vincristine, and prednisone (CEOP-100): a phase II study.

Epirubicin is an agent with a lower incidence of cardiotoxicity and myelotoxicity compared with doxorubicin; and it is active in patients with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL). Our aim was to define the therapeutic efficacy and toxicity of dose-intensified epirubicin in combination with cyclophosphamide, vincristine, and prednisone (CEOP) in patients with diffuse large-cell NHL. Previously untreated patients aged between 15 and 75 years, with at least one measurable lesion, adequate liver, renal, cardiac functions, and no central nervous system involvement were included in the study.

Prognostic factors in pancreatic carcinoma: serum LDH levels predict survival in metastatic disease.

In this study, our aim was to investigate the impact of various prognostic factors on survival in patients with pancreatic carcinoma. The group consisted of 127 cases with adenocarcinoma histologically. The patients had a median age of 58 years, and 81 (64%) were male.

Prognostic significance of melanoma inhibiting activity levels in malignant melanoma.

This analytic (phase II) study aimed to investigate the hypothesis that the decline in serum melanoma-inhibiting activity (MIA) levels following initiation of treatment might have prognostic value. The mean serum lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), MIA and S100 levels in patients with malignant melanoma before treatment were higher than in the control group. Patients with visceral dissemination had much higher mean serum MIA levels than patients with nodal spread only.
