The fruits of palm trees (Arecaceae) are a very important food source for fauna and for humans, despite the still incipient role of these fruits in conventional diet. Seven palm tree species (plus one variety) that are native to the southern half of South America located east of the Andes (Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, and the southern states of Brazil) were studied. For the first time, the fatty acid profiles of palm seeds and the content of both amino acids and phenolic compounds present in the pulp (yellowish fleshy mesocarps) of the fruits were determined.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFFusion splicing is an already mature technology used to join the ends of optical fibers in the telecommunication industry. However, there is a lack of reliable and well-described protocols to join the ends of fused silica microtubes or capillaries using fusion splicing. In this work, a step-by-step procedure is proposed and demonstrated to find the optimal operation conditions to splice the ends of fused silica capillaries by fusion.

Colonized grain flours were analysed for their nutritional, physical and physico-chemical characteristics and biological activity in vitro. Wheat flour with P.

The aim of this study is to analyze the nutritional composition of its seeds and the mutagenic/antimutagenic activity of the hydroalcoholic extract of the seed flour. Chemical elements (colloquially known as minerals) were determined using Particle-Induced X-ray Emission (PIXE) and Flame Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (FAAS), while the content of amino acids (aminogram) and fatty acids (profile of fatty acids) were quantified by HPLC.

The present work reviews the potential biomarkers of AD based on the concentration changes of small molecules and chemical elements in noninvasive samples (urine, saliva, hair and others). An updated table with 74 target compounds is produced and ranked.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFAnalytical instruments able to provide extremely high sensitivities, separation efficiencies, and peak capacities are important for both applied sciences and basic research. It is even more interesting if this can be achieved within organic, aqueous, and physiological solutions without restricting the operation parameters, such as buffer pH, temperature, ionic strength, and background electrolyte composition. Toroidal capillary electrophoresis offers this potential, as was recently proposed and demonstrated.

The resolution between two neighboring peaks is proportional to the square root of the plate number. Currently available commercial capillary electrophoresis instruments easily reach plate numbers of a few million.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFAmantadine (AMA) is an uncompetitive antagonist of the N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor, with clinical application, acting on treatment of influenza A virus and Parkinson's disease. It has been proposed that AMA can indirectly modulate dopaminergic transmission. In high doses, the central nervous system is its primary site of toxicity.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA multiresidue method is described for determining six sulfonamides (SAs) (sulfadiazine, sulfathiazole, sulfamethazine, sulfamethoxazole, sulfaquinoxaline and sulfadimethoxine) in liver by a capillary electrophoresis screening method and a liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry confirmatory assay. Samples were prepared by homogenizing the tissue, with sodium hydroxide and acetonitrile. After evaporation, extracts were injected in the capillary electrophoresis system or mass spectrometry system for confirmatory analysis.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA large number of nanostructures have the potential to be used together with electrophoresis as separation media or separation additive in capillary electrophoresis, micellar electrokinetic chromatography, capillary electrochromatography, and other analytical techniques. Among those structures are nanotubes, nanocavities, nanowires, nanoposts, nanocones, nanospheres, molecular imprints, nanoparachutes (conical monodendrons), and general nanoparticles with random structures. This review is focused only on publications describing experimental works using molecular imprints, nanoposts, and nanospheres that are fabricated and applied for the purpose of separation media in electrophoresis-driven separations.
