Comparison of Becton Dickinson Vacutainer rapid serum tube with the serum separator tube for routine chemistry and immunoassay tests.

Aims: To shorten the clotting time and resolve the delayed clotting or no clotting on specimens from patients on anticoagulant therapy, Becton Dickinson (BD) recently developed the Vacutainer rapid serum tube (RST). The aim of this study was to systematically compare the new RST tube with the widely used serum separator tube (SST) for routine chemistry and immunoassay tests on 3 common analyser platforms.

Methods: Blood from 45 people (24 women and 21 men, age 21-77 years) was collected using the SST and RST tubes in sequence.

Interference of gadolinium-based contrast agents on colorimetric calcium assays.

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential interference of five gadolinium-based contrast agents (GBCAs), gadodiamide (Omniscan®), gadobenate dimeglumine (Multihance®), gadoxetate disodium (Primovist®), gadobutrol (Gadovist®), and gadoteridol (Prohance®), on three clinical laboratory widely used colorimetric calcium assays including the newly developed 5-nitro-5'methyl-l,2-bis(2-aminophenoxy)ethane-N,N,N',N'-tetraacetic acid (NM-BAPTA) method.

Methods: Plasma was collected from healthy volunteers aged 23-52, and spiked with varying concentrations of the five GBCAs. Calcium determinations were performed in duplicates using the o-cresolphthalein complexone (OCP), arsenazo-III dye, and NM-BAPTA methods on the Roche Integra 400, Abbott Architect 16000, and Roche Modular P automated analyzers respectively.

Performance evaluation of Siemens ADVIA Centaur and Roche MODULAR Analytics E170 Total 25-OH Vitamin D assays.

Objectives: To evaluate the newly developed Roche MODULAR Analytics E170 Total Vitamin D and the Siemens ADVIA Centaur Vitamin D Total assays.

Materials And Methods: Assays were evaluated using the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute protocols. Split patient samples were compared with LC-MS/MS and DiaSorin LIAISON assays (n=79 including 15 specimens with detectable endogenous 25-OH vitamin D(2)).

An analysis of the MCMI-I at the item level.

The study reports on principal component analyses of the MCMI-1 at the item level. The 175 items of the MCMI were separated for analysis into 100 descriptive of personality and 75 that represent clinical symptoms. The data analyzed came from a sample of 253 psychiatric outpatients and a sample of 185 inpatient alcoholics.

Biosynthesis of 1-methyladenine by isolated segments of starfish ovaries.

Acid-soluble 1-methyladenine (1-MeA) and an insoluble fraction containing 1-MeA were formed when radioactive L-methionine or adenine (A) were incubated with starfish ovary segments. Attempts to prepare free ribonucleic acid (RNA) from ovaries failed since it was strongly bonded to protein as ribonucleoprotein (RN-P) which was therefore used in studies involving RNA. Incubation of ovary segments with [8-14C]adenine-8 (A-8-14C) yielded both soluble 1-Me-A-8-14C and RN-P-8-14C, and similar incubation with L-[methyl-14C]methionine yielded soluble 1-MeA-14CH3 and RN-P-14CH3.
