Introduction: One of the basic chronic diseases of the MFH domain that is treated on an outpatient basis is temporomandibular dysfunction (TMD). It represents a number of pathological conditions that lead to the dysfunction of the normal function of the stomatognatic system. Observing the etiologic factors of this condition, temporomandibular TM trauma, poor habits such as infantile type of swallowing, tongue depression, and tectogenic disturbance of the myofunctional squamous system are reported in order to reconstruct the defects of neighboring regions.

Elongated Miofascial Temporal Flap in Comparison with Standard Surgical Procedure of Temporal Muscle Reconstruction.

Introduction: Flap of the temporal muscle (m. temporalis) with its natural position, its mass and its length, compared with other bound and free microvascular flaps, is the method of choice for covering the middle part of the face after the removal of large tumor masses.

Material: The study included a sample of 36 patients who were surgically treated due to malignant process at the middle face level with the performed partial, total or bilateral maxillectomy at the Clinic for Maxillofacial Surgery, University Clinical Center in Sarajevo.

Influence of the optic disc size on cup diameter in patients with glaucoma simplex chronicum.

Introduction: The relationship between the optic disc size, neuroretinal rim and cup diameter is the key in identifying glaucomatous changes in optic nerve head. Like some other biological characteristics, changes of the optic disc differ among healthy populations, thus hindering detection of pathological changes.

Material And Methods: From the total number of 90 patients, we selected those that have optic disc diameter less than 1.

The incidence of recurrent pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid gland in relation to the choice of surgical procedure.

Aim: To investigate an incidence of recurrence of pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid gland in relation to the choice of surgical procedure.

Methods: All patients with a diagnosis of pleomorphic adenoma of parotid gland who underwent surgery at the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery (MFS) of the Clinical Center of the University of Sarajevo (CCU), Bosnia and Herzegovina, in the period 01 January 1992 - 31 December 2010 were included in the study. The incidence of recurrence and complications in relation to the choice of surgical procedure (enucleation, excision of the tumor, superficial parotidectomy and total parotidectomy) as well as the choice of diagnostic procedures were compared.

Modificiation of infrahyoid neuromyocutaneous flap with radical neck dissection.

Introduction: Understanding technique of flap surgery allow uncompromising tumor resection and operation of tumors previously considered inoperable. Infrahyoid neuro-myocutaneous flap (IHNMCF) is pedicled flap harvested from the anterior part of the neck. IHNMCF is a good solution for the moderated sized defects of the head and neck below the zygomatic arch.

The relationship between oral hygiene and oral colonisation with Candida species.

Orbital defects after malignant tumor removal represent a major problem for satisfactory reconstruction. Treatment and surgical reconstruction according to the regular surgical protocol improves with each new case contributing to continuous improvement of surgical techniques in order to achieve better reconstruction of the defect. In our modification in 20 patients there was presented a new method of reconstruction of the defect where the orbits included also a part of the muscle (sternocleidomastoid muscle) for better stabilization at the desired position on the immediate ocular prosthesis installation site in order to quickly overcome the postoperative defect after orbital exenteration.

New method for maximum mobilization of temporalis muscle flap.

Introduction: Pedicled temporalis muscle flap presenting a good flap for closing large craniofacial defects. Careful surgeons usually do not mobilize temporalis muscle flap enough to make appropriate use, fully closure, especially if defect exceeds the median line.

Patients And Methods: Temporalis flap was used in 16 patients, ages ranged between 12 and 76.

Managment of frontal sinus fracture: obliteration sinus with cancellous bone graft.

Frontal sinus fractures make up about 2-15% of all facial fractures.This is relatively low frequency of occurrence, but it has a large potential of complication and may involve not only the frontal sinuse but more importantly the brain and the eyes. The management depends of the complexity.

A cutaneous horn is a uncommon and rare lesion. It is a conical projection of hyperkeratotic epidermis. Vary from a few milimeters to a several centimeters in length.

Management of a comatose patient with multiple intracranial aneurysms--lessons learned.

The perioperative management of a deeply comatose patient (Glasgow Coma Score, GCS 5) following a spontaneous subarachnoid hemorrhage is presented. Six intracranial aneurysms of the anterior circulation were discovered at operation, contrary to angiographic findings. These were successfully clipped by the author (KD).

Pineal region tumors--neurosurgical review.

The treatment for the pineal region tumors depends on tumor histology. Nowadays, germinomas can be cured by radiotherapy and chemotherapy without surgical resection but the other pineal region tumors should be primary treated by surgery. Two microsurgical approaches, the infratentorial supracerebellar and the occipital transtentorial, are accepted as the main standard accesses to the pineal region.

Digital techniques in experimental medicine.

Color Doppler and intravenous angiography (digital technique) can widely be used in experimental medicine. Their wide clinical application, availability, simplicity and small cost impose their importance. Color Doppler analysis of the vascular activity of certain region is more precise than the classic intravenous angiography, but requires contact of highly sophisticated equipment with the experimental animal.

Transmandibular approach to the malignant neoplasms of the mouth base, tongue root and oropharynx.

Tumors of the mouth basis, tongue root and oropharynx present a challenge for surgical treatment. High recurrence rates, poor survival, and significant postoperative alterations in speech and swallowing function are common experiences for patients with malignancies in these anatomic sites. This paper reviews the evaluation of displayed patients: pathologic features, surgical approaches and postoperative complications reported in recent managing patients with these neoplasms.

[Temporoparietal pedicled flap for orbital reconstruction].

Introduction: This is excellent technique for orbital cavity reconstruction. The pericranial flap and flap of superficial temporoparietal fascia are supplied by superficial temporal artery and vein. These flaps are used as skin carrier without hairs of retroauricular area that can be moved to area of eye socket.

[Clinical value of certain slice groups in reconstruction of head and neck defects].

Unlabelled: Post surgical and posttraumatic defects of head and neck, until couple of years ago, was treated with the surgical procedures which did not produced satisfactory results in terms of reconstruction of lost function and esthetic appearance. Only during last couple of years these defects are treated with the more aggressive methods than before. Esthetic appearance, functions of speech and swallowing became important features in the post surgical evaluation of the reconstruction value.

[Several variantes of transfacial approach to calvaria bases and subbasal space].

Unlabelled: Surgical procedure of transfacial translocation is one of procedures that ensure the best approach and visualization of the whole medial and lateral region of the middle third of the face, base of calvaria and rhinopharynx, sphenoid sinus, pterygomaxillary fossa, odontoid process and clivus.

Patient And Methods: In ten patients using transfacial approach, the tumors of base of calvaria and subbasal space were removed. There were six planocellular carcinomas, two transitional carcinomas and two tumors with endocranial origin.

[Craniofacial surgical treatment of the gigantic plasmacytoma of the skull base: case report].

The complex craniofacial surgery of solitary bone plasmacytoma (SBP) of the skull base with excellent postoperative outcome was presented. This surgical management was result of the team approach and strategy of neurosurgeon (KD) and maxillofacial surgeon (TM). SBP of the skull base is very rare condition which should be treated by radical microsurgical resection and postoperative radiotherapy.

[Use of new computer technologies in surgical education--virtual surgery].

Education is a process of accepting knowledge and skills or manners modification throught training. One of the most important characteristics in surgery education are classical education program through adequate literature and observation in operation room. Lip and palate clefts are relative rare diseases and classical knowledge acquirement of surgery methods in this field is sometimes defficient.
