Synbiotic supplementation ameliorates anxiety and myocardial ischaemia-reperfusion injury in hyperglycaemic rats by modulating gut microbiota.

Hyperglycaemia, hyperlipidaemia, hypertension and obesity are the main risk factors affecting the development and prognosis of ischaemic heart disease, which is still an important cause of death today. In our study, male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed either a standard diet (SD) or a high fat and high carbohydrate diet (HF-HCD) for 8 weeks and streptozotocin (STZ) was injected at the seventh week of the feeding period. In one set of rats, a mixture of a prebiotic and probiotics (synbiotic, SYN) was administered by gavage starting from the beginning of the feeding period.

ProNGF promotes brain metastasis through TrkA/EphA2 induced Src activation in triple negative breast cancer cells.

Background: Triple-Negative Breast Cancer is particularly aggressive, and its metastasis to the brain has a significant psychological impact on patients' quality of life, in addition to reducing survival. The development of brain metastases is particularly harmful in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). To date, the mechanisms that induce brain metastasis in TNBC are poorly understood.

Metformin extends the chronological lifespan of fission yeast by altering energy metabolism and stress resistance capacity.

The antiaging properties of metformin used for the treatment of type-2 diabetes mellitus have been studied extensively, but there is more to discover regarding underlying mechanisms. Here, we show that metformin significantly prolongs the chronological lifespan (CLS) of Schizosaccharomyces pombe through mechanisms similar to those observed in mammalian cells and other model organisms. While the presence of metformin in the medium caused an increase in carbohydrate consumption and ATP production, it reduced reactive oxygen species production and alleviate oxidative damage parameters such as lipid peroxidation and carbonylated proteins.

Transcriptome sequencing and screening of genes related to glucose availability in Schizosaccharomyces pombe by RNA-seq analysis.

While calorie restriction is the most used experimental intervention to increase lifespan in numerous model organisms, increasing evidence suggests that excess glucose leads to decreased lifespan in various organisms. To fully understand the molecular basis of the pro-aging effect of glucose, it is still important to discover genetic interactions, gene expression patterns, and molecular responses depending on glucose availability. Here, we compared the gene expression profiles in Schizosaccharomyces pombe mid-log-phase cells grown in three different Synthetic Dextrose media with 3%, 5%, and 8% glucose, using the RNA sequencing method.

Prevalence of COVID-19 in 10,000 samples from 7853 patients in Eastern Turkey by positive real-time PCR.

COVID-19, caused by SARS-CoV-2, started in December 2019 and has spread across the world. We analyzed real-time PCR results of 10,000 samples from 2 April to 30 May 2020 in three neighbor cities located in the East of Turkey. The final study population was 7853 cases, after excluding screening tests.

Complex human diseases such as metabolic disorders, cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, and mitochondrial dysfunctions arise from the biochemical or genetic defects in various cellular processes. Therefore, it is important to understand which metabolic processes are affected by which cellular impairment. Because genome-wide screening of mutant collections (haploid/diploid deletion library) provides important clues for the understanding of conserved biological processes and for finding potential target genes, we screened the haploid mutant collection of with wortmannin that inhibits phosphatidylinositol-3-kinase signaling.

Clinical and video head impulse test in the diagnosis of posterior circulation stroke presenting as acute vestibular syndrome in the emergency department.

Introduction: Head impulse test (HIT) is the critical bedside examination which differentiates vestibular neuritis (VN) from posterior circulation stroke (PCS) in acute vestibular syndrome (AVS). Video-oculography based HIT (vHIT) may have aadditional strength in making the differentiation.

Methods: Patients admitted to the emergency department of a tertiary-care medical center with AVS were studied.

Primary Sinonasal Malignant Melanoma: Effect of Clinical and Histopathologic Prognostic Factors on Survival.

Background: Mucosal melanoma is a rare malignancy arising from melanocytes of the mucosal surfaces. The pattern and frequency of oncogenic mutations and histopathological biomarkers have a role on distinct tumour behaviour and survival.

Aims: To assess the rate of C-KIT positivity and its effect on survival of surgically treated sinonasal malignant melanoma patients with other histopathological biomarkers and clinical features.

Pancreatic cystic lymphangioma: diagnostic approach with MDCT and MR imaging.

Lymphangiomas are rare congenital benign tumors arising from the lymphatic system mostly encountered in the neck and axillary regions of pediatric patients. Pancreatic cystic lymphangiomas very rarely occur in adults. Radiologically, the lesion may mimic pancreatic carcinoma and should be considered in the differential diagnosis of any patient found to have an abdominal cystic mass.

Good outcomes of patients with stage IB endometrial cancer with surgery alone.

Background: Most patients with endometrial cancer have stage I disease. Adjuvant therapy in stage IB (formerly IC) endometrial cancer is controversial, treatment options including observation or brachytherapy/ radiotherapy in grade 1-3 patients with or without chemotherapy. The purpose of this study was to assess the outcomes of our patients with stage IB endometrioid endometrial cancer.

Impact of treatment strategies on local control and survival in uterine carcinosarcomas in Turkey.

Background: The purpose of this study was to determine the clinical characteristics, patterns of recurrence and survival outcomes in patients with uterine carcinosarcomas treated in our institution.

Materials And Methods: Records of 26 patients diagnosed between 2007 and 2011 with uterine carcinosarcoma were retrospectively evaluated for demographic features, tumor characteristics, treatment regimens and patient outcomes in terms of DFS and OS RESULTS: Median age was 61 (range 43-78). 10 patients (38%) had stage I disease at diagnosis, 3 (12%) had stage II, 4 (15%) had stage III and 9 (35%) had stage IV.

Neoadjuvant chemotherapy followed by cesarean radical hysterectomy in a triplet pregnancy complicated by clear cell carcinoma of the cervix: a case presentation and literature review.

Objective: To report a triplet pregnancy complicated by clear cell cervical carcinoma that was managed using neoadjuvant chemotherapy followed by caesarean radical hysterectomy.

Patient History: A 26-year-old woman had a diagnosis of cervical clear cell carcinoma, which was International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics stage IB1, at 18 weeks of gestation during a triplet pregnancy. Owing to the patient's strong desire for full-term pregnancy, 3 cycles of neoadjuvant chemotherapy was administered after magnetic resonance imaging evaluation of the tumor.

Cu,Zn superoxide dismutase (SOD1) is an antioxidant enzyme that catalyzes the removal of superoxide radicals generated in various biological oxidations. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is one of the most common neurodegenerative disorders, occurring in families (FALS) and sporadically (SALS). FALS and SALS are distinguishable genetically but not clinically.

Effect of graft type on postoperative liver function recovery in living liver donors.

Background: Donor safety is the primary focus in living-donor liver transplantation. Although, the procedure carries a significant risk of morbidity and even death, the use of marginal living donors is a current issue of discussion.

Patients And Methods: Between September 2001 and October 2008, we performed 203 liver transplantation procedures using organs from living donors.

Renin-angiotensin system polymorphisms: a risk factor for progression to end-stage renal disease in vesicoureteral reflux patients.

Aim. Renin-angiotensin system (RAS) gene mutations have been implicated as a risk factor for the presence and progression of renal disease in vesicoureteral reflux (VUR). However, the results are contradictory, and the effects of RAS polymorphisms in VUR patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) have not been defined yet.

Postpartum sacral stress fracture: an unusual case of low-back and buttock pain.

Low-back and buttock pain is a common complaint during pregnancy and the postpartum period and is usually attributable to mechanical lesions of the pelvis. Sacral stress fractures are unusual but important causes that should be considered in differential diagnosis. To date, only eight postpartum sacral stress fractures have been reported in the literature.

The effect of superoxide dismutase deficiency on zinc toxicity in Schizosaccharomyces pombe.

Zinc is a metal which is a cofactor in many enzymes and a structural element in zinc finger motifs those are important in relation between DNA and regulator proteins. Little is known about uptake, distribution, toxicity and detoxification of zinc ions in cells. In this study, zinc toxicity and detoxification levels have been compared in wild type and Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase mutant (sod1Delta) cells of the fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe.

Neurofibroma of the bladder wall in von Recklinghausen's disease.

Neurofibromatosis, or von Recklinghausen's disease, is an autosomal dominant disease with multiple neurofibroma and café-au-lait spots. However, neurofibroma in the bladder wall is a rare condition in von Recklinghausen's disease. A 31-year-old man with neurogenic voiding dysfunction due to sacral meningocele and acute urinary retention with neurofibroma of the bladder wall is presented with detailed radiologic evaluation.

Primary choriocarcinoma of the stomach and pancreas: CT findings.

In this report we present the CT findings of two non-gestational, extragonadal choriocarcinomas, one arising within the stomach and one in the pancreas. These are rare tumours and a pancreatic primary site has not been previously described.
