Objective: We aim to describe the parotid fascia as a landmark that can help identify the immediately underlying facial nerve trunk.

Methods: Dissection of the parotid fascia and identification of the facial nerve trunk were carried out on 8 fresh cadaveric parotid glands. The attachments and arrangement of the parotid gland and its fascia were evaluated and histologically assessed, with special attention to the fascia overlying the facial nerve trunk.

Historically patients with advanced basal cell carcinoma have been subjected to large surgical resections for the treatment of their disease. However, with the development of vismodegib, a first in class molecule that acts to inhibit the hedgehog pathway, patients with advanced and metastatic basal cell carcinoma may have renewed hope in limiting the morbidity involved with surgery. Preliminary data shows a relatively good safety profile and promising results, although further research remains to be conducted.

Low plasma adiponectin has been identified as a risk factor for type 2 diabetes. Our objective was to determine the extent to which low maternal plasma adiponectin is predictive of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), a condition that is biochemically and epidemiologically similar to type 2 diabetes. We used a prospective, nested case-control study design to compare maternal plasma adiponectin concentrations in 41 cases with 70 controls.
