Long-term use of opioids for pain management results in rapid development of tolerance and dependence leading to severe withdrawal symptoms. We have previously demonstrated that endothelin-A (ETA) receptor antagonists potentiate opioid analgesia and eliminate analgesic tolerance. This study was designed to investigate the involvement of central ET mechanisms in opioid withdrawal.

Unlabelled: Quorum quenching decreases Pseudomonas aeruginosa virulence factors and biofilm formation, alleviating infections in animal models. Nevertheless, it is usually performed in laboratory strains such as PAO1 and PA14, and studies involving clinical or environmental isolates are scarce. In this work, the effects of ZnO nanoparticles, a potent quorum and virulence quencher for the PAO1 strain, were tested in six clinical strains from cystic fibrosis patients, a furanone C-30 resistant clinical strain from urine, two PA14 gallium resistant mutants, a PA14 C-30 resistant mutant and four environmental isolates.

The combination of various experimental techniques with theoretical simulations has allowed elucidation of the mode of incorporation of fluorene based derivatives into phospholipid bilayers. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations on a fully hydrated 1,2-dimyristoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphatidylcholine (DMPC) bilayer, with benzene (B), biphenyl (BP), fluorene (F) and tri-(9,9-di-n-octylfluorenyl-2,7-diyl), TF, have provided insights into the topography of these molecules when they are present in the phospholipid bilayer, and suggest marked differences between the behavior of the small molecules and the oligomer. Further information on the interaction of neutral fluorenes within the phospholipid bilayer was obtained by an infrared (IR) spectroscopic study of films of DMPC and of the phospholipid with PFO deuterated specifically on its alkyl chains (DMPC-PFO-d34).

Hypoglycemia is one of the main burdens for type I Diabetes Mellitus (DM I) patients. The consequences of hypoglycemia can be quite unpleasant due to the variety of disagreeable physical and psychological symptoms it triggers. The patient's previous experience with hypoglycemia episodes will condition his psychological reaction to future episodes, promoting behavioral modifications that associate with poor glycemic control and worse prognosis, and even with developing psychological disorders, leading to fear of hypoglycemia (FH).

Aberrant lymphocytes signaling is one of the numerous mechanisms thought to be responsible for the pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases. One of the most successful approaches to the treatment of autoimmunity is through targeting of lymphocytes, whose multiple targetable functions include proliferation, cytokine secretion, and migration. The adhesion process is a critical step, not only for migration but also for their communication with antigen-presenting cells, and is therefore a clear target for therapy.

Careful fidelity monitoring and feedback are critical to implementing effective interventions. A wide range of procedures exist to assess fidelity; most are derived from observational assessments (Schoenwald and Garland, Psycholog Assess 25:146-156, 2013). However, these fidelity measures are resource intensive for research teams in efficacy/effectiveness trials, and are often unattainable or unmanageable for the host organization to rate when the program is implemented on a large scale.
