Coal occupies an absolute advantage in the primary energy structure of China. However, the production of coal poses a serious threat to the ecological environment and human health. In order to quantify the environmental impact of coal mining, this study used the life cycle assessment (LCA) method to analyse the life cycle of coal mining from the cradle-to-gate.

Short-term preoperative methionine restriction (MetR) is a promising translatable strategy to mitigate surgical injury response. However, its application to improve post-interventional vascular remodeling remains underexplored. Here we find that MetR protects from arterial intimal hyperplasia in a focal stenosis model and pathologic vascular remodeling following vein graft surgery in male mice.

The abundance and biological contribution of natural killer (NK) cells in cancer are controversial. Here, we aim to uncover clinical relevance and cellular roles of NK cells in colon cancer liver metastasis (CCLM). Here, we integrated single-cell RNA-sequencing, spatial transcriptomics (ST), and bulk RNA-sequencing datasets to investigate NK cells' biological properties and functions in the microenvironment of primary and liver metastatic tumors.

Article Synopsis
  • Human Enterovirus 71 (EV71) is a major cause of hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) worldwide, with an inactivated vaccine already available, but new advanced vaccine candidates are being explored.
  • Researchers created two DNA-launched live attenuated vaccine candidates (pDL-EV71) that showed effectiveness in generating infectious EV71 in lab tests and were safe in animal models, with no clinical symptoms reported.
  • Immunization with pDL-EV71 led to strong antibody responses, and a single dose provided complete protection against severe EV71 infection in newborn mice, indicating its potential as a viable vaccine candidate for further research.

In electroencephalogram (EEG) cognitive recognition research, the combined use of artificial neural networks (ANNs) and spiking neural networks (SNNs) plays an important role to realize different categories of recognition tasks. However, most of the existing studies focus on the unidirectional interaction between an ANN and a SNN, which may be overly dependent on the performance of ANNs or SNNs. Inspired by the symbiosis phenomenon in nature, in this study, we propose a general DNA-like Hybrid Symbiosis (DNA-HS) framework, which enables mutual learning between the ANN and the SNN generated by this ANN through parametric genetic algorithm and bidirectional interaction mechanism to enhance the optimization ability of the model parameters, resulting in a significant improvement of the performance of the DNA-HS framework in all aspects.

Rapid, low-cost and high-specific diagnosis based on nucleic acid detection is pivotal in both detecting and controlling various infectious diseases, effectively curbing their spread. Moreover, the analysis of circulating DNA in whole blood has emerged as a promising noninvasive strategy for cancer diagnosis and monitoring. Although traditional nucleic acid detection methods are reliable, their time-consuming and intricate processes restrict their application in rapid field assays.

Background: Metabolic reprogramming and epigenetic alterations contribute to the aggressiveness of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). Lactate-dependent histone modification is a new type of histone mark, which links glycolysis metabolite to the epigenetic process of lactylation. However, the role of histone lactylation in PDAC remains unclear.

Background: The consumption of cheese and fish has been linked to the onset of depression. However, the connection between consuming cheese, consuming fish, experiencing depression, and the pathways that mediate this relationship remains unclear. The purpose of this research was to investigate the potential association between the consumption of cheese and fish and the occurrence of depression.

Background: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder. Dementia severity was assessed mainly through cognitive function, psychobehavioral symptoms, and daily living ability. Currently, there are not many drugs that can be selected to treat mild to moderate AD, and the value of drugs remains controversial.

Background: Differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) is commonly diagnosed in women of child-bearing age, but whether pregnancy influences the prognosis of DTC remains controversial. This study aimed to summarize existing evidence regarding the association of pregnancy with recurrence risk in patients previously treated for DTC.

Methods: We searched PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane, and Scopus based on the prespecified protocol registered at PROSPERO (CRD42022367896).

The specific and sensitive detection of 17β-estradiol (E2) is critical for diagnosing and treating numerous diseases, and aptamers have emerged as promising recognition probes for developing detection platforms. However, traditional long-sequence E2 aptamers have demonstrated limited clinical performance due to redundant structures that can affect their stability and recognition ability. There is thus an urgent need to further optimize the structure of the aptamer to build an effective detection platform for E2.

Coal mining has important detrimental effects on the environment and human health. By the end of 2022, China mined more than 4 billion tons of raw coal, and coal mining contributed to adverse environmental impacts. The objective of this work is to evaluate the environmental impacts emanated from coal mines in different periods (construction period, production period and closing period) and to find the relationship between coal mine scale and ecological impacts.

Introduction: Both UCM and DCC are used to treat preterm infants, but there is no uniform standard for the length of UCM. The aim of this work was to explore the effectiveness and safety of different umbilical cord milking (UCM) lengths versus delayed cord clamping (DCC).

Methods: We enrolled premature infants from the Affiliated Hospital of Zunyi Medical University between September 2019 and October 2020 with random allocation (1:1:1:1) to the UCM 10 cm, UCM 20 cm, UCM 30 cm, and DCC groups.

Carbon emission control is an important aspect of regional sustainable development. However, there are few studies on predicting the impact of different socio-economic development strategies on carbon emissions under the premise of established government policy objectives, and then evaluating the degree of achievement of policy objectives. In order to research the effect of social and economic development strategies on carbon emissions, remote sensing land use data of Zhejiang Province from 2000 to 2020 were utilized in this paper to quantify carbon emissions, combined with Kaya identity and LMDI decomposition method, and multi-scenario carbon emissions simulation and prediction were carried out under the STIRPAT model framework.

Continuous in vivo monitoring (CIVM) of pH value is essential for personalized medicine, as many diseases are closely related to acid-base imbalances. However, conventional pH meters are limited in their ability to perform CIVM due to excessive blood consumption, large device volume, frequent calibration, and inadequate real-time monitoring. There is thus an urgent need for a portable method for CIVM of pH value.

Background: Preterm complications are now the second leading cause of death in children under five years of age. Colostrum is essential to prevent infection and promote maturation in preterm infants. Guidelines recommend that preterm infants be fed colostrum by the oral and pharyngeal routes as early as possible after birth to provide immune protection; however, due to disease and an uncoordinated sucking and swallowing function, it is challenging to provide colostrum through the oropharyngeal route, which limits the immune protection it provides.
