Background: Anastomotic leakage (AL) is a severe complication following esophagectomy with high mortality. Perioperative decreased serum albumin level is considered a predictive of AL, however, its impact on AL incidence in patients treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NCT) followed by minimally invasive esophagectomy (MIE) is not well defined.

Methods: The data of 318 consecutive esophageal cancer patients who underwent MIE were collected retrospectively from January 2021 to December 2021.

Recent studies have reported worldwide vegetation suppression in response to increasing atmospheric vapor pressure deficit (VPD). Here, we integrate multisource datasets to show that increasing VPD caused by warming alone does not suppress vegetation growth in northern peatlands. A site-level manipulation experiment and a multiple-site synthesis find a neutral impact of rising VPD on vegetation growth; regional analysis manifests a strong declining gradient of VPD suppression impacts from sparsely distributed peatland to densely distributed peatland.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how the learning curve of surgeons performing minimally invasive esophagectomies affects the long-term quality of life (QoL) of cancer patients who are disease-free after surgery.
  • Over 280 patients who underwent the procedure between 2009 and 2019 completed QoL questionnaires, revealing that those operated on by more experienced surgeons reported significantly better health outcomes, particularly with respiratory and digestive symptoms.
  • Patients still suffering from symptoms like dyspnea and dysphagia were mainly those who had surgeries during the initial learning phase, indicating a need for enhanced focus on patient care during this period.

Mechanical ball milling is used to produce multi-materials for selective laser melting (SLM). However, since different powders have different particle size distributions and densities there is particle segregation in the powder bed, which affects the mechanical properties of the printed part. Core-shell composite powder materials are created and used in the SLM process to solve this issue.

The development of chemoresistance which results in a poor prognosis often renders current treatments for colorectal cancer (CRC). In this study, we identified reduced microvessel density (MVD) and vascular immaturity resulting from endothelial apoptosis as therapeutic targets for overcoming chemoresistance. We focused on the effect of metformin on MVD, vascular maturity, and endothelial apoptosis of CRCs with a non-angiogenic phenotype, and further investigated its effect in overcoming chemoresistance.
