Three new aza-BODIPY dyes incorporating fused fluorene or carbazole moieties have been prepared. The dyes show significant enhancement of photophysical properties compared to the parent 1,3,5,7-tetraphenyl aza-BODIPY (TPAB): a bathochromic shift of the absorption maximum (up to 2700 cm ) and emission maximum (up to 2270 cm ); an almost threefold increase in molar absorption coefficients (to ca. 230 000 M  cm ) and a significant increase in the fluorescence quantum yield to 49-66 %.

A new fluorescent sensor for Na is presented. The sensor relies on a Na selective fluoroionophore based on a bright red-emitting BODIPY chromophore. The fluorescence of the fluoroionophore is enhanced upon binding of Na-ions to the highly selective aza-crown ether receptor due to reduction of the photoinduced electron transfer (PET) quenching.

From 1,2;3,4-di-O-isopropylidene-α-D-galactopyranose, a series of highly functionalized (hydroxymethyl)cyclopentanes was easily available. In line with reports by Reymond and Jäger on similar structures, these amine containing basic carbasugars are potent inhibitors of β-D-galactosidases and, for the first time, could be shown to act as pharmacological chaperones for G-gangliosidosis-associated lysosomal acid β-galactosidase mutant R201C, thus representing a new structural type of pharmacological chaperones for this lysosomal storage disease.

New aza-BODIPY indicators which cover the pH scale from 1.5 to 13 are presented. The new indicators feature absorption/emission bands in the red/near-infrared (NIR) spectral region, exhibit high molar absorption coefficients (∼ 80,000 M(-1) cm(-1)) and show good quantum yields (∼20%).
