Acute necrotising pancreatitis is a condition associated with high morbidity and mortality, and for decades surgical intervention was the gold standard for treatment of symptomatic pancreatic necrosis. A shift towards minimally invasive interventions has reduced the mortality significantly as summarised in this review. Studies comparing open necrosectomy with videoscopic-assisted retroperitoneal debridement (VARD) have demonstrated that VARD lowers morbidity and mortality.
