Article Synopsis
  • This review talks about diastolic dysfunction, which can make it hard for people to breathe during exercise, and how echocardiography (a heart imaging method) helps check how well the heart is working.
  • It mentions that traditional images might not show problems when a person is active, so stress echocardiography is useful to find these issues during exercise.
  • The review also highlights new ways to test and understand heart function for different groups of patients like athletes or people with heart issues, allowing doctors to get a better look at heart health without surgery.

Background: Cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) differentiates cardiac metastasis (C) and cardiac thrombus (C) based on tissue characteristics stemming from vascularity on late gadolinium enhancement (LGE). Perfusion CMR can assess magnitude of vascularity; utility for cardiac masses (C) is unknown.

Objectives: This study sought to determine if perfusion CMR provides diagnostic and prognostic utility for C beyond binary differentiation of C and C.

Article Synopsis
  • Mitral valve prolapse and aortic root dilatation are common in people with hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (hEDS), but the range of cardiovascular issues has not been fully explored until now.
  • A study reviewing 258 patients diagnosed with hEDS or hypermobility spectrum disorder (HSD) found mitral valve prolapse in 7.5% and thoracic aortic dilatation in 15.2%, with higher rates in those with hEDS.
  • Most cardiovascular symptoms were mild, especially in women, but patients with aortic dilatation need ongoing monitoring, and healthcare providers should include hEDS/HSD when evaluating patients with specific arterial complications like cervical artery dissection or spontaneous

Article Synopsis
  • - Dysautonomia is a common issue in patients with joint hypermobility disorders, affecting 65% of females and 44% of males in a study of 144 patients, leading to debilitating symptoms like exercise intolerance.
  • - The study found that the prevalence of a sedentary lifestyle increased significantly among dysautonomic patients, rising from 44% to 85% after the onset of symptoms, suggesting a drastic decline in physical activity.
  • - Echocardiographic analysis indicated that dysautonomia is linked to smaller cardiac chamber sizes, which may contribute to the symptoms experienced by these patients and could be related to a decline in aerobic fitness.

Objectives: The goal of this study is to determine the incidence, predictors, and outcomes of atrial fibrillation (AF) or atrial flutter (AFL) in patients hospitalized with coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19).

Background: COVID-19 results in increased inflammatory markers previously associated with atrial arrhythmias. However, little is known about their incidence or specificity in COVID-19 or their association with outcomes.

Background: Patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) who develop cardiac injury are reported to experience higher rates of malignant cardiac arrhythmias. However, little is known about these arrhythmias-their frequency, the underlying mechanisms, and their impact on mortality.

Methods: We extracted data from a registry (NCT04358029) regarding consecutive inpatients with confirmed COVID-19 who were receiving continuous telemetric ECG monitoring and had a definitive disposition of hospital discharge or death.

Article Synopsis
  • A study of 140 patients with hypermobility disorders revealed that 66% experienced headaches or neck pain, with migraines being the most common headache type.
  • Cervical spondylosis was frequently found in those with neck symptoms, with 61% of affected patients reporting this condition.
  • The study suggested that headaches, particularly migraines, might be related to cervical spine issues, as many patients showed improvement after targeted cervical treatments.

Cardiac amyloidosis is an acquired heart disease secondary to the deposition of β-pleated amyloid proteins in heart tissue. Amyloid light chain (AL) amyloidosis is usually secondary to multiple myeloma and can rapidly deteriorate cardiac function, with high mortality. Up to 50% of AL patients have cardiac involvement presenting as heart failure, conduction abnormalities, and cardiomyopathies.

Objective: To assess the effectiveness of a traditional birth attendant (TBA) referral program on increasing the number of deliveries overseen by skilled birth attendants (SBA) in rural Kenyan health facilities before and after the implementation of a free maternity care policy.

Methods: In a rural region of Kenya, TBAs were recruited to educate pregnant women about the importance of delivering in healthcare facilities and were offered a stipend for every pregnant woman whom they brought to the healthcare facility. We evaluated the percentage of prenatal care (PNC) patients who delivered at the intervention site compared with the percentage of PNC patients who delivered at rural control facilities, before and after the referral program was implemented, and before and after the Kenya government implemented a policy of free maternity care.
