We found that a newly isolated Burkholderia sp. produced (R)-2-amino-1-phenylethanol from 2-aminoacetophenone, showing the high stereospecificity. NADPH-dependent 2-aminoacetophenone reductase purified to homogeneity was a dimer with a molecular mass of 65,000.

We screened soil samples for CO(2)-requiring extreme oligotrophs similar to Rhodococcus erythropolis N9T-4, which can grow on a basal salt agar medium without an organic carbon source. From 387 soil samples, three isolates were obtained and identified as Streptomyces spp. by 16S rDNA analysis.

The mean energy intake increased from 825+/-48 kcal/d to 1567+/-66 kcal/d after the 6-week treatment period. The fasting glucose level did not change, remaining at about 100 mg/dl throughout this period.

Biogenic Mn oxides have a high sorption capacity for metal cations and an ability to oxidize numerous inorganic and organic compounds, owing to their structural and redox features. Thus, the microbial process is of significance in both biogeochemical and biotechnological contexts.

Methods: The PyNpase levels in tumor tissue, normal tissue adjacent to the tumor, and normal tissue apart from the tumor were measured in 102 patients. Additionally, the PyNpase levels were measured in rat and mouse urinary bladders treated with BBN.
Rhodococcus erythropolis N9T-4, which was isolated from crude oil, showed extremely oligotrophic growth and formed its colonies on a minimal salt medium solidified using agar or silica gel without any additional carbon source. N9T-4 did not grow under CO(2)-limiting conditions but could grow on a medium containing NaHCO(3) under the same conditions, suggesting that the oligotrophic growth of N9T-4 depends on CO(2). Proteomic analysis of N9T-4 revealed that two proteins, with molecular masses of 45 and 55 kDa, were highly induced under the oligotrophic conditions.

Herein, we evaluated the antitumor effects of intratumoral injection of RGD fiber-mutant adenoviral vectors (AdRGDs) encoding the chemokines CCL17, CCL19, CCL20, CCL21, CCL22, CCL27, XCL1 or CX3CL1 in a murine model of preexisting CT26 colon carcinoma. Among these 8 chemokine-expressing AdRGDs, injection of AdRGD-CCL17 most effectively induced tumor regression and generated specific immunity in rechallenge experiments.

From the results of the inversion of an (R)-isomer to an (S)-isomer and GC-MS, it was suggested that (R)-1,2,4-butanetriol is oxidized to 1,4-dihydroxy-2-butanone, which is reduced to an (S)-isomer.

In this study, we characterized the KCNJ2 channels with an ATS mutation (T75M) which is associated with cardiac phenotypes of bi-directional ventricular tachycardia, syncope, and QT(c) prolongation. Confocal imaging of GFP-KCNJ2 fusion proteins showed that the T75M mutation impaired membrane localization of the channel protein, which was restored by co-expression of WT channels with T75M channels.

In particular, five aryl hydrocarbons, including a novel chlorinated aryl ether, were identified for the first time as environmental pollutants. In the effluent stream, concentration levels of up to 1600 microg L(-1) and 190 microg g(-1) were detected in the surface water and surface sediment, respectively.

The conversion ratio from morphine to fentanyl has been claimed to be 100:1 or 150:1, but there may exist individual variations.
Methods: We retrospectively evaluated the analgesic effects and adverse effects of fentanyl patch in 24 cases among 22 patients (11 men and 11 women).
Background: The null phenotype of the Lutheran blood group system, Lu(null) or Lu(a-b-), is characterized by the lack of all Lutheran system antigens. It can arise from three genetic backgrounds: recessive, dominant, or X-linked. Lu(null) of the recessive type appears to result from homozygosity for an inactive LU gene.

Most often, neutrophil-specific antibodies are directed toward human neutrophil antigen (HNA)-1 (Fcgamma receptor 3b) and HNA-2a (CD177) in these disorders.
Study Design And Methods: To detect the alloantibodies in the serum samples, a panel of cell lines was established in which the HNA-1a, HNA-1b (polymorphisms of HNA-1), or HNA-2a gene was transduced with a retrovirus vector to confer stable transgene expression in K562 cells that exhibited low background reactivity to human serum samples obtained from healthy donors in flow cytometric analysis.
Background: In addition to the telomere shortening that occurs with cell division, oxidative stress can damage or shorten telomeres and induce a condition termed premature senescence, possibly before telomeres become critically short. We investigated the effects of cell-cycle turnover and oxidative stress on cellular senescence in hepatitis C virus (HCV)-related chronic liver injury.
Method: Using quantitative fluorescence in situ hybridization, the telomere lengths of hepatocytes in biopsy specimens from HCV-positive patients were estimated.
A novel photochromic helicenoid diarylethene (R)-1-[1-(1-methoxymethoxyethyl)-2-naphtho[2,1-b]thienyl]-2-(2,4,5-trimethyl-3-thienyl)hexafluorocyclopentene was synthesized enantioselectively. We successfully treated a 20-year-old man with very rare McLeod phenotype CGD with reduced-intensity conditioning and unrelated-donor umbilical cord blood transplantation. We postulate that reduced-intensity conditioning-allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation is a promising therapeutic strategy for patients with CGD even if only unrelated-donor umbilical cord blood is available.

However determining HR status based on IHC only in biochemically HR negative breast cancers has never been studied. The aim of this study is to examine the histological characteristics in immunohistochemically HR positive but biochemically HR negative breast cancers.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA glucose sensor was developed by electrocopolymerization using pyrroles containing a tris-bipyridine (bpy) osmium complex (Os-py), pyrrole (py), pyrrole propanoic acid (PPA) and glucose oxidase (GOx) to improve the key performance characteristics, such as the sensitivity, selectivity, and long-term stability. Tris-bipyridine osmium pyrrole complexes with four different methylene moieties were utilized to correlate the methylene length with the glucose sensor performance. The electrocatalytic response of glucose was clearly observed at electrodes modified with Os-py, except for the electrode immobilized with the Os-py complex containing the shortest methylene moiety.
