Background: Hypoxanthine, prevalent in animals and plants, is used in the production of food additives, nucleoside antiviral drugs, and disease diagnosis. Current biological fermentation methods synthesize quantities insufficient to meet industrial demands. Therefore, this study aimed to develop a strain capable of industrial-scale production of hypoxanthine.

Article Synopsis
  • Orotic acid is important in healthcare and cosmetics, but it’s hard to produce efficiently due to auxotrophic microorganisms.
  • Researchers created a non-auxotrophic strain of E. coli that can produce orotic acid without needing extra plasmids or inductions.
  • This new strain, called Ora21, achieved record-high production levels and utilized a novel fermentation process that further increased yield, showcasing its potential for industrial use.
