Purpose: This cohort study evaluated the factors associated with discontinuation of antihypertensive pharmacotherapy among Chinese patients who were prescribed beta-blockers. We tested the hypothesis that patients' age, gender, socioeconomic status, clinical settings and the number of comorbidities were significantly associated with the discontinuation of beta-blockers.

Methods: From a validated clinical database we included all adult patients 18 years or older who were prescribed a beta-blocker in any government primary care clinic in one large territory of Hong Kong during 01 January 2004-30 June 2007.

Osteosarcoma is the most common primary malignancy of bone. Overexpression of mitotic arrest defective protein 2 (MAD2) is found in many human neoplasms, but its role in the oncogenesis of osteosarcoma is an untouched topic. The objective of this research was to observe the expression of MAD2 in human osteosarcoma and explore its clinicopathologic significance.

Purpose: Transforming growth factor (TGF)-beta is considered to be responsible for the formation of scars such as adhesions around healing digital flexor tendons. We proposed to deliver microRNAs (miRNAs) to silence expression of the TGF-beta1 gene and to investigate the effectiveness of miRNAs in down-regulation of the TGF-beta1 gene in vitro and in vivo.

Methods: We designed and engineered 4 miRNAs according to genetic sequences of chicken TGF-beta1.

Purpose: Pulleys have an important role in digital flexion, but little is known about how the strength of a tendon repair is affected by a major pulley. We evaluated the difference in strengths of flexor tendon repairs in the pulley area when the pulley was intact or divided in a chicken tendon injury model.

Methods: In each of 100 long toes of 50 Leghorn chickens, a complete, transverse laceration of the flexor digitorum profundus tendon was made in the region of the A2 pulley and was repaired surgically.

Purpose: Release of part of the A2 pulley has been suggested to improve function after zone II primary flexor tendon repairs. The purpose of this study was to measure the effect of A2 pulley release compared with pulley preservation on repaired tendon gliding resistance and rupture in the early postoperative period in a chicken model.

Methods: We divided 104 long toes from 52 Leghorn chickens into 2 experimental groups.

Objective: Tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) as a main thrombolytic drug for acute ischemic stroke remains complicated by risk of hemorrhagic transformation. However, whether endogenous tPA is also involved in hemorrhagic transformation is yet unclear.

Methods: We randomly assigned male Sprague-Dawley rats into three groups: the heparin group, the control group and the sham operated group.

Objective: Tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) may aggravate ischemic neuronal damage after focal cerebral ischemia and increase blood-brain barrier permeability. Human serum albumin has neuroprotective effects on ischemic stroke. However, whether albumin can attenuate the deleterious effects of tPA is yet unknown.

Purpose: To investigate changes in the lengths of selected carpal ligaments during wrist radioulnar deviation in vivo.

Methods: We studied in vivo changes in the lengths of fibers of 5 palmar and dorsal intracapsular ligaments of the wrist during radioulnar deviation in 6 wrists of healthy volunteers using a noninvasive approach. Using serial computed tomography scans and volume registration techniques, the carpal kinematics were examined at 4 positions, from 40 degrees ulnar deviation to 20 degrees radial deviation, in 20 degrees increments.

Necrosis of surgically transferred flaps is a major problem in reconstructive surgery. We investigated efficacy of a new vector system-adeno-associated viral 2 (AAV2)-mediated bFGF gene transfer to enhance survival of the ischemic flap. Thirty-eight Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into 3 gene therapy groups and 1 nontreated control of 9 or 10 each.

To evaluate the antibacterial effect of multivalent silver ion carried by zirconium phosphate (ZP-Ag) both in vitro and in an experimental rat burn wound compared with that of sulfadiazine silver (SD-Ag). Firstly, the minimal inhibition concentration and the minimal bactericidal concentration of ZP-Ag to three different strains of bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Escherichia coli) were compared with those of SD-Ag in vitro. Following this dressings containing the same mass of ZP-Ag or SD-Ag were applied to wounds in a rat burn model and their antimicrobial activity assayed.

The development of integrated imaging systems for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and positron emission tomography (PET) is currently being explored in a number of laboratories and industrial settings. PET/MRI scanners for both preclinical and human research applications are being developed. PET/MRI overcomes many limitations of PET/computed tomography (CT), such as limited tissue contrast and high radiation doses delivered to the patient or the animal being studied.

Bone marrow stromal cells (MSCs) can be differentiated into neuronal and glial-like cell types under appropriate experimental conditions. However, previously reported methods are complicated and involve the use of toxic reagents. Here, we present a simplified and nontoxic method for efficient conversion of rat MSCs into neurospheres that express the neuroectodermal marker nestin.

Background: Treatment of the disrupted intrasynovial flexor tendon is troublesome and can be complicated by the rupture of weak repairs and the formation of adhesions. The central issue underlying the unsatisfactory outcomes is the lack of sufficient healing capacity, which prohibits aggressive postoperative tendon motion. Transfer of genes that are critical to healing by means of an efficient vector system offers a promising way of strengthening the repair.
