Youth who have dropped out of school engage in risky health behaviors and have limited access to health care. It is difficult for health experts to develop programs that successfully reach this population. Employment and training programs for youth who have dropped out are a potential venue for addressing the many health needs of these youth.

The mental health needs of out-of-school adolescents and young adults: an intervention conducted in employment training programs, Baltimore, Maryland, 2007-2008.

Introduction: Despite the large number of adolescents and young adults in employment training programs, a population that has poorer health and greater health risk than similarly aged in-school peers, we are unaware of any health interventions that have been evaluated in this setting. The primary objective of our study was to evaluate changes in depressive symptoms, coping strategies, and receipt of mental health services among low-income African American adolescents and young adults receiving a mental health intervention integrated into an employment training program.

Methods: The intervention consisted of an on-site mental health clinician, a peer-led depression prevention intervention, and training sessions for employment training staff.

We examined whether mental health training for staff of an employment training program for out-of-school youth aged 16 to 22 years would increase mental health discussions and referrals. We reviewed case files of participants at 1 Baltimore program who enrolled 6 months before (n = 303) and after (n = 263) a 2-day training program. Chi-square analyses indicated increases in the percentage of participants with discussions (1% to 9%, χ(2) = 4.

Hepatocellular carcinoma presenting as an isolated sphenoid sinus lesion: a case report.

We report a rare case of a metastatic sphenoid sinus lesion originating from an undiagnosed hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in a 53-year-old man who presented with gradually progressive external ophthalmoplegia. Imaging showed a right sphenoid sinus lesion infiltrating the parasellar region. Although a primary sphenoid biopsy was inconclusive, positive hepatitis B surface antigen and CT-guided fine-needle aspiration cytology suggested an HCC.

Use of technology with health care providers: perspectives from urban youth.

Objective: To evaluate urban youths' use of and access to technology and solicit their opinions about using technology with healthcare providers.

Study Design: Urban youth (aged 14-24 years) were invited to participate in focus groups in which a trained focus group facilitator used a survey and a structured guide to elicit responses regarding the foregoing objective. All sessions were audiotaped and transcribed.

Up to 32% of parotid neoplasms are malignant, and treatment for resectable parotid carcinomas remains primarily surgical. Resection is centred round the identification and preservation (where possible) of the main trunk of the facial nerve. Limited dissection of the temporal bone and identification of the facial nerve proximally in the mastoid portion can facilitate resection for all parotid carcinomas that occur in the preauricular portion of the gland.

An 11-year-old girl reported with an intraoral swelling which was noticed by her mother at birth and increased to its present size during the last year A thorough clinical examination did not shed a conclusive diagnosis. This case highlights and discusses the history, clinical features, histologic features, differential diagnosis and the clinical management of this lesion. Awareness of such an entity will enrich the knowledge of the pediatric dentists who may be the first ones to encounter such cases in their day-to-day practice.

The objective of this study was to ascertain the effects of a mouthwash prepared with Triphala on dental plaque, gingival inflammation, and microbial growth and compare it with commercially available Chlorhexidine mouthwash. This study was conducted after ethics committee approval and written consent from guardians (and assent from the children) were obtained. A total of 1431 students in the age group 8-12 years, belonging to classes fourth to seventh, were the subjects for this study.

A comparison of three screening tools to identify perinatal depression among low-income African American women.

Background: The purpose of the current study was to determine the sensitivity, specificity, and positive predictive value of three depression screening tools among a low-income African American population of pregnant and recently delivered women enrolled in home visitation programs in a low-income urban community.

Methods: Ninety-five women enrolled in home visitation programs-32 who were pregnant and 63 with a child <6 months comprise the study sample. Each woman completed a structured clinical interview and three depression screening tools-the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS), Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D), and Beck Depression Inventory II (BDI-II).

Preventing perinatal depression in low-income home visiting clients: a randomized controlled trial.

Objective: To assess the efficacy of a 6-week cognitive-behavioral intervention in preventing the onset of perinatal depression and reducing depressive symptoms among low-income women in home visitation programs.

Method: Sixty-one women who were pregnant or who had a child less than 6 months of age and who were assessed as at risk for perinatal depression were randomized to a 6-week, group-based cognitive-behavioral intervention or usual home visiting services. Study participants were predominately African American, unmarried, and unemployed.

Haim-Munk syndrome is an extremely rare autosomal recessive disorder of keratinization characterized clinically by palmoplantar hyperkeratosis, severe early onset periodontitis, onychogryphosis, pes planus, arachnodactyly, and acro-osteolysis. Recently, germline mutations in the lysosomal protease cathepsin C gene have been identified as the underlying genetic defect in Haim-Munk syndrome and in the clinically related disorders, such as Papillon-Lefèvre syndrome and prepubertal periodontitis. The periodontal disease associated with these syndromes is particularly aggressive and unresponsive to traditional periodontal therapies.

Perceptions of mental health services among low-income, perinatal African-American women.

Introduction: The objective of this qualitative study was to explore perceptions of mental health services as a barrier to service use among low-income, urban, perinatal African-American clients of home visiting programs.

Methods: Inductive thematic analysis procedures were used to analyze data collected from focus groups conducted with clients (n = 38) and staff (n = 26) of two paraprofessional home visiting programs.

Findings: Four complementary themes were identified: Perceptions of mental health care providers, concerns about confidentiality, beliefs about the effectiveness of psychotherapy, and perceptions of psychotropic medication.

Long-term oncologic outcomes of laparoscopic radical nephrectomy for kidney cancer resection: Dundee cohort and metaanalysis of observational studies.

Background: The long-term oncologic outcome of laparoscopic radical nephrectomy compared with that of open radical nephrectomy remains unclear. A few case series with follow-up periods longer than 5 years are reported in the literature. The existing literature is focused primarily on early and intermediate outcomes of laparoscopic radical nephrectomy.

Evaluation of β-tricalcium phosphate in human infrabony periodontal osseous defects: a clinical study.

Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) (Synthograft, Bicon USA) in periodontal osseous defects in comparison to open flap debridement (OFD).

Method And Materials: Twelve patients showing clinical and radiographic evidence of almost identical bilateral infrabony defects were selected. The infrabony defects in the 12 patients were treated with OFD+β-TCP on one side and OFD on the other side.

Reorganization of the primary motor cortex of adult macaque monkeys after sensory loss resulting from partial spinal cord injuries.

Long-term injuries to the dorsal columns of the spinal cord at cervical levels result in large-scale somatotopic reorganization of the somatosensory areas of the cortex and the ventroposterior nucleus of the thalamus. As a result of this reorganization, intact inputs from the face expand into the deafferented hand representations. Dorsal column injuries also result in permanent deficits in the use of digits for precision grip and a loss of fractionated movements of the digits.
