The authors characterized the role of interleukins in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the development of vasospasm after subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH), particularly interleukin-6 (IL-6). Concentrations of interleukin-1 beta (IL-1 beta), IL-6, and interleukin-8 (IL-8) were measured serially in CSF of 24 patients and in serum of 9 patients with SAH and correlated clinically. Additionally, the effects of the same cytokines on the cerebral arteries of dogs were analyzed on angiograms after intracisternal injection.

Methods: We measured the concentrations of the NO metabolites, nitrite and nitrate, in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) obtained from the cisternal drainage of patients with SAH. Studies were performed for 31 patients who had undergone surgical obliteration of bleeding aneurysms within 3 days of their hemorrhage.
We report a case of multiple communicating intradural cystic lesions. Magnetic resonance imaging did not demonstrate the lesions. Neuroradiological diagnosis of the intradural arachnoid cysts was made from myelography and myelo-computed tomography using both lumbar and cervical punctures.

To investigate the influence of inducible nitric oxide synthase on cerebral arteries after subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) in vivo, lipopolysaccharide (LPS), a major inducer of inducible nitric oxide synthase, was injected intracisternally into control and SAH model dogs. Intracisternal injection of LPS (0.5 mg) produced a long-lasting, submaximal vasodilation of the basilar artery of control dogs on angiography.

The function of nitric oxide in spastic cerebral arteries after subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) was angiographically investigated in dogs. On days 4 and 7, after two intracisternal injections of autologous blood, higher concentrations of L-arginine than those of endogenous L-arginine in the cerebrospinal fluid produced a transient vasodilation of the spastic basilar artery, whereas NG-monomethyl-L-arginine (L-NMMA) produced no significant vasoconstriction. The vasodilator effect of L-arginine after SAH was stronger on day 4 than day 7, but less than that in intact dogs.

These included L-arginine (a substrate for the formation of nitric oxide), NG-monomethyl-L-arginine (L-NMMA, an analog of L-arginine that inhibits the formation of nitric oxide from L-arginine), and superoxide dismutase (SOD, which protects nitric oxide from oxidation by superoxide anion), which were given via intracisternal injection. The diameter of the basilar artery was assessed angiographically.

A rare case of true aneurysms of the middle meningeal artery (MMA) associated with cavernous hemangioma in a 47-year-old male is presented. Angiography showed aneurysmal dilatation of the MMA, which was a tumor feeder. Histological examination confirmed the true aneurysmal character of the dilatation.
