For the design of a new chiroptically active host-guest system, a bent amphiphilic compound was synthesized using cyclic monoterpenes as key biorelated chiral frameworks. In water, the bent amphiphiles form a terpene-based micellar capsule with a core diameter of ∼2 nm in a spontaneous and quantitative fashion. The resultant chiral capsule shows wide-ranging uptake abilities toward achiral fluorescent dyes in water.

Elemental analysis at the single-cell level is an emerging technique in the field of inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). In comparison to the analysis of cell suspensions by fast time-resolved analysis, single-cell sampling by laser ablation (LA) allows the discriminatory analysis of single cells according to their size and morphology. In this study, we evaluated the changes in elemental contents in a single cell through differentiation of rat adrenal pheochromocytoma into neuron-like cells by LA-ICP-MS.

Introduction: To prevent infection after limb-sparing surgery for primary malignant bone tumors, it is important to cover the megaprosthesis with muscle tissue that has sufficient blood flow. Coverage with a lateral gastrocnemius flap has been reported in cases of distal femoral replacement in which the vastus lateralis and vastus intermedius muscles have been resected; however, the risk of peroneal nerve palsy is reportedly high because the muscle flap passes near the peroneal head. This study was performed to examine the postoperative outcomes of patients with primary malignant bone tumors of the distal femur who underwent wide resection (including the vastus lateralis and vastus intermedius muscles) followed by reconstruction with a megaprosthesis and coverage of the lateral side of the prosthesis with a sartorius muscle flap.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates how liver fibrosis negatively affects liver natural killer (NK) cells, which are important for fighting tumors, and the role of interleukin-33 (IL-33) in this process.
  • The research reveals that higher levels of liver fibrosis correlate with lower survival rates and a higher chance of cancer recurrence after surgery, as indicated by the Fibrosis-4 (FIB-4) index.
  • The findings suggest that targeting IL-33 and enhancing NK cell function could be potential treatment strategies to improve the liver's immune response against hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in patients with liver fibrosis.

Adnexal cyst torsion in late preterm pregnancies is rare, but it frequently causes secondary uterine contractions. Thus, deciding on performing a simultaneous cesarean section due to the potential for early postoperative labor onset is crucial despite no obstetric indications. Here, we report a case of adnexal torsion at 34 weeks of gestation treated with emergency surgery, followed by a full-term vaginal delivery, along with a literature review.

Pure metal nanowires (NWs) are one-dimensional nanomaterials with distinctive properties for various applications. Nevertheless, mass-growth forests have not been developed because of vapor pressure limitations, chemical reduction problems, or both. We succeeded in the mass growth of aluminum (Al) NW forests at desired locations by controlling atomic diffusion within the solid film.

Ideonella sakaiensis is a bacterium that can degrade and consume polyethylene terephthalate (PET), a plastic material that was previously considered non-biodegradable. The degradation of PET requires two enzymes, namely poly (ethylene terephthalate) hydrolase (PETase) and mono (2-hydroxyethyl) terephthalate hydrolase (MHETase), which break down PET into terephthalate (TPA) and ethylene glycol (EG), which serve as carbon sources for the bacterium. Previous studies have focused on the enzymatic properties, structure, and mechanism of action of PETase and MHETase.

Food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome (FPIES) caused by fish and others is prevalent in the Mediterranean regions but is less frequently reported in Japan. This case report describes a 3-year-old Japanese girl who developed FPIES triggered by multiple seafoods, including swordfish, cod, and squid. The diagnosis was confirmed through oral food challenge tests (OFC), which led to repeated vomiting and an increase in thymus and activation-regulated chemokine (TARC) levels.

Aim: Education on insulin self-injection techniques is important for good glycemic control, but its effectiveness in some elderly patients is limited due to loss of cognitive function and impaired activities of daily living. We hypothesized that classification using the Dementia Assessment Sheet for Community-based Integrated Care System 8-items (DASC-8) would help identify elderly patients with diabetes who effectively learn self-injection techniques.

Methods: Diabetes patients aged ≥ 65 years who used a self-injection insulin pen were administered the DASC-8 and a questionnaire to evaluate insulin self-injection techniques, and then received technical education.

Diacylglycerol O-acyltransferase 1 (DGAT1) is a key enzyme for fat absorption step in the enterocytes. We previously reported that DGAT1 inhibition increased plasma alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) activities in corn oil-loaded rats via protein kinase C (PKC) activation. In the present study, we investigated the mechanism with respect to the morphology and permeability of the small intestine, focusing on PKC function, and found that shortening of the intestinal villi and a decrease in the number of tdT-mediated dUTP-biotin nick-end labeling-positive cells in the tips of the villi were observed in the jejunum of DGAT1 inhibitor-treated rats loaded with corn oil.
