Predictive factors of portal hypertensive enteropathy exacerbations based on long-term outcomes.

Background: Portal hypertensive enteropathy (PHE) is a small-bowel lesion observed in patients with portal hypertension. The clinical significance of endoscopic findings in PHE remains unclear. We aimed to clarify the clinical significance and predictive factors of capsule endoscopic findings in patients with PHE based on long-term outcomes.

Sex Differences in Predicting Difficult Laryngeal Exposure: Validation and Modification of Predictive Models.

Objectives/hypothesis: To determine the presence of sex differences in difficult laryngeal exposure and the Laryngoscore, validate the Laryngoscore, mini-Laryngoscore, and Clarysse's model for predicting difficult laryngeal exposure, and modify the Laryngoscore for improved prediction accuracy.

Study Design: Retrospective study.

Methods: This study included 153 patients who underwent laryngeal microsurgery at a tertiary laryngology center and university hospital.

Regional Collaboration for Heart Failure Patients Certified as Needing Support or Care in Long-Term Care Insurance System.

Background: Heart failure (HF) patients with complex care needs often experience exacerbations during the transitional phase as care providers and settings change. Regional collaboration aims to ensure continuity of care; however, its impact on vulnerable patients certified as needing support or care under the Japanese long-term care insurance (LTCI) system remains unclear.

Methods And Results: We implemented a regional collaborative program for HF patients involving 3 pillars of transitional care with general practitioners and nursing care facilities: (1) standardized health monitoring using a patient diary and identification of exacerbation warning signs; (2) standardized information sharing among care providers; and (3) standardized HF management manuals.

Association of dorsal malunion in distal radius fractures with wrist osteoarthritis: Alterations of bone density and stress-distribution patterns in relation to deformation angles.

Objective: Distal radius fractures (DRFs) with dorsal malunion increase the risk of osteoarthritis (OA), although the cause of post-DRF OA is yet to be elucidated. To clarify the abnormal effects of a post-DRF dorsal radius deformity, we evaluated the bone density (BD) and stress-distribution patterns of the articular surface in dorsally malunited DRFs.

Design: In 36 cases of dorsally malunited DRFs following extra-articular fractures, we generated three-dimensional computerized models of the malunited distal radius from computed tomography data and extracted the subchondral bones of the radiocarpal joint (RCJ) and distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ).

Stability mechanism of crystalline CO2 and Xe.

We explore the phase behaviors of simple molecular crystals in order to investigate the molecular basis of the stability mechanism relative to their liquid counterparts. The free energies of the face centered cubic crystals of Xe and CO2 are calculated as a collection of oscillators, and those of the liquids are from an equation of state via molecular dynamics simulations. The vibrational free energy in the solid is separated into the harmonic and anharmonic terms.

An extended-gate-type organic transistor for monitoring the Menschutkin reaction of tetrazole at a solid-liquid interface.

We herein propose an approach to visualize the Menschutkin reaction at an interface between a self-assembled monolayer with nucleophilic properties and water containing alkyl halides. An organic field-effect transistor functionalized with a nucleophilic monolayer has detected alkylation depending on differences in the leaving group ability and the bulkiness of electrophilic alkyls.

Innovative use of a stent retriever for temporary revascularization in acute internal carotid artery dissection.

Internal carotid artery dissection is rare but can be a cause of stroke in young people. In a case of revascularization for stroke associated with internal carotid artery dissection, we initially used a stent retriever for thrombectomy. Since an appropriately-sized stent for permanent treatment was not available, we innovatively maintained temporary revascularization with the stent retriever for 90 minutes.

A national survey of medical staffs' required capability and workload for accelerator-based boron neutron capture therapy.

This study aimed to identify the required capabilities and workload of medical staff in accelerator-based boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT). From August to September 2022, a questionnaire related to the capabilities and workload in the accelerator-based BNCT was administered to 12 physicians, 7 medical physicists and 7 radiological technologists engaged in BNCT and 6 other medical physicists who were not engaged in BNCT to compare the results acquired by those engaged in BNCT. Only 6-21% of patients referred for BNCT received it.

The impact of renal function on initial therapy in transplant-ineligible multiple myeloma patients.

The prognosis for multiple myeloma (MM) patients has improved with the advent of new drugs, but the prognosis with renal impairment (RI) is poor. The choice of treatment in such cases is critical, but there are no set criteria. We examined the impact of RI on initial therapy in transplant-ineligible MM patients.

Genetic polymorphisms of calpain1 and calpain3 genes and their effects on growth, carcass, and meat quality traits in Betong chicken (KU line).

Betong chicken (KU line) is a slow-growing Thai native chicken used for meat production. The objectives of this study were to identify polymorphisms of the calpain1 (CAPN1) and calpain3 (CAPN3) genes and to investigate their effects on growth, carcass, and meat quality traits in Betong chickens (KU line). A sample of 252 Betong chickens (KU line) was screened for CAPN1 and CAPN3 polymorphisms.

Intra-Articular Corrective Osteotomy for Distal Radial Intra-Articular Malunion Using Patient-Matched Instruments: A Prospective, Multicenter, Open-Label, Single-Arm Trial.

Background: Corrective osteotomy for intra-articular malunion is a challenging procedure. However, recent advancements, including patient-matched instruments created on the basis of preoperative computer simulation, enable accurate intra-articular correction. We hypothesized that intra-articular corrective osteotomy using patient-matched instruments for the treatment of distal radial intra-articular malunion would reduce intra-articular deformity and restore wrist function at 12 months of follow-up.

The particle contact model is important for powder simulations. Although several contact models have been proposed, their validity has not yet been well established. Therefore, we perform molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to clarify the particle interaction.

Vertical margin distance in T1 colorectal carcinoma resected by endoscopic submucosal dissection affects prognosis after additional surgery.

Unlabelled: PURPOSE : A vertical margin (VM) distance of < 500 µm is a risk factor for recurrence in patients with T1 colorectal carcinoma (CRC) resected by endoscopy. We aimed to determine the effects of the VM distance on the recurrence and prognosis of T1 CRC.

Methods: We enrolled 168 patients with T1 CRC who underwent additional surgery after endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) at multiple centers between 2008 and 2016.

Monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio is a prognostic predictor for patients with non-small cell lung cancer treated with stereotactic body radiation therapy.

Background: The monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio (MLR), a systemic inflammation biomarker, has been shown to predict patient outcomes in several types of cancer. This study aimed to determine the association between MLR and local control (LC) and cause-specific survival (CSS) rates in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) treated with stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT).

Prognostic Impact and Genomic Backgrounds of Renal Parenchymal Infiltration or Micronodular Spread in Nonmetastatic Clear Cell Renal Cell Carcinoma.

A subset of clear cell renal cell carcinomas (ccRCCs) exhibits various growth patterns that infiltrate the normal renal parenchyma; however, our understanding of its association with cancer aggressiveness is incomplete. Here, we show that the morphology of the tumor interface with normal renal parenchyma is robustly associated with cancer recurrence after surgery, even when compared with the TNM staging system or the World Health Organization/International Society of Urological Pathology (WHO/ISUP) nuclear grade in nonmetastatic ccRCC. Hematoxylin and eosin-stained slides of whole tissue sections from surgical specimens were analyzed using a cohort of 331 patients with nonmetastatic ccRCC treated with radical nephrectomy.

Physical Fitness and Exercise Performance of Transgender Women.

Introduction: In spite of the evolving participation of transgender adults in exercise and sports, research investigating the physical fitness of transgender women remains scarce in the scientific literature.

Methods: In this cross-sectional study, a variety of reference standard measures of physical fitness of transgender women who had undergone gender-affirming orchiectomy (30 ± 4 yr; n = 15) and who had not (27 ± 4 yr: n = 15) were compared with reference males (28 ± 5 yr; n = 15) and reference females (29 ± 5 yr; n = 15) who were matched for age and estimated physical activity level. Transgender women had been undergoing feminizing gender-affirming therapy for 8 to 10 yr.

In this study, we present the surgical case of a symptomatic SXG associated with Rathke cleft cyst. The intraoperative decision to prevent postoperative cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leakage and secure the drainage route is discussed.

Cardiac sarcoidosis treated with nonsteroidal immunosuppressive therapy.

Background: Nonsteroidal immunosuppressive therapy is a potential therapeutic strategy for cardiac sarcoidosis. However, it is not recommended as an established treatment option. New non-contrast MRI of endolymphatic hydrops in Ménière's disease considering inversion time.

Objectives: Three-tesla MRI with gadolinium-based contrast agents is important in diagnosing Ménière's disease. However, contrast agents cannot be used in some patients. By using the compositional difference between the inner ear endolymph and perilymph, we performed basic and clinical research focused on potassium ions and protein to find the optimal parameters for visualizing endolymphatic hydrops on MRI without contrast.

PQBP3/NOL7 is an intrinsically disordered protein.

PQBP3 is a protein binding to polyglutamine tract sequences that are expanded in a group of neurodegenerative diseases called polyglutamine diseases. The function of PQBP3 was revealed recently as an inhibitor protein of proteasome-dependent degradation of Lamin B1 that is shifted from nucleolus to peripheral region of nucleus to keep nuclear membrane stability. Here, we address whether PQBP3 is an intrinsically disordered protein (IDP) like other polyglutamine binding proteins including PQBP1, PQBP5 and VCP.
