Sleep medicine and chronobiology education among Brazilian medical students.

Chronobiology and sleep medicine are pivotal disciplines for understanding human health. Additionally, the lack of training in medical schools exacerbates the underdiagnosis and undertreatment of sleep disorders. This study investigated the exposure of Brazilian medical students to chronobiology and sleep medicine during their undergraduate education and assessed their knowledge in these areas.

Integrating sleep care in psychological practice: A survey of Brazilian clinical psychologists and a global bibliometric analysis.

Given psychologists' role and the use of psychotherapies for sleep issues, our study explored: (1) whether psychologists inquire about patients' sleep quality and their beliefs regarding the relationship between mental health and biological rhythms, and (2) global trends in psychological approaches through a bibliometric analysis. We analyzed responses from 1011 Brazilian clinical psychologists (October 2018-May 2019) and found that most routinely inquire about sleep quality and address sleep problems, while a small portion did not perceive a direct link between mental disorders and biological rhythms. Behavioral psychotherapy practitioners showed greater interest in sleep quality.

Melatonin, known as the hormone of darkness, plays a crucial role in regulating both the circadian and reproductive systems in mammals. Hypothyroidism is a key endocrine disorder that harms the reproductive system.

Impact of computer-aided characterization for diagnosis of colorectal lesions, including sessile serrated lesions: Multireader, multicase study.

Objectives: Computer-aided characterization (CADx) may be used to implement optical biopsy strategies into colonoscopy practice; however, its impact on endoscopic diagnosis remains unknown. We aimed to evaluate the additional diagnostic value of CADx when used by endoscopists for assessing colorectal polyps.

Methods: This was a single-center, multicase, multireader, image-reading study using randomly extracted images of pathologically confirmed polyps resected between July 2021 and January 2022.

The complex relationship between circadian rhythms and mental health makes it challenging to determine causality between circadian desynchronization and mental disorders. Regarding the fact that psychologists act as the front line for initial mental health care, we aimed to assess the knowledge and use of sleep science and basic chronobiology by professional psychologists in Brazil.

Severe Liver Disorder Following Liver Transplantation in STING-Associated Vasculopathy with Onset in Infancy.

Purpose: STING-associated vasculopathy with onset in infancy (SAVI) is a type-I interferonopathy, characterized by systemic inflammation, peripheral vascular inflammation, and pulmonary manifestations. There are three reports of SAVI patients developing liver disease, but no report of a SAVI patient requiring liver transplantation. Therefore, the relevance of liver inflammation is unclear in SAVI.

[Long-Term Disease Control with Capecitabine plus Bevacizumab Therapy for an Elderly Patient with Unresectable Colon Cancer-A Case Report].

An 83-year-old man visited our hospital with liver tumors detected by abdominal ultrasonography. On investigation, he was diagnosed with sigmoid colon cancer with metastasis in the supraclavicular lymph node, liver, and para-aortic lymph node(T3N1M1b, Stage ⅣB[Union for International Cancer Control 8th edition]). He was administered combination therapy with capecitabine and bevacizumab owing to the increased age and Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status score of 1.

Circadian rhythms and substance use disorders: A bidirectional relationship.

The circadian system organizes circadian rhythms (biological cycles that occur around 24 h) that couple environmental cues (zeitgebers) with internal functions of the organism. The misalignment between circadian rhythms and external cues is known as chronodisruption and contributes to the development of mental, metabolic and other disorders, including cancer, cardiovascular diseases and addictive disorders. Drug addiction represents a global public health concern and affects the health and well-being of individuals, families and communities.

Objective: Lips can easily become dry and rough, one reason being the characteristics of their ceramide (CER) profile. Lips have lower levels of total ceramides, higher percentages of CER[NS] and CER[AS], and lower percentages of CER[NP] and CER[NH] than skin in other regions of the body. The purpose of this study was to clarify the effects of synthetic pseudo-ceramide (pCer; Cetyl-PG hydroxyethyl palmitamide) to improve the dryness and roughness of the lips of healthy subjects in a formulation that exclude an occlusive effect.

Measurement of human blood viscosity a using Falling Needle Rheometer and the correlation to the Modified Herschel-Bulkley model equation.

We measured the blood viscosity of 25 male and 25 female healthy people (total 50) using a compact-sized falling needle viscometer (Falling Needle Rheometer) capable of highly accurate measurements. Based on the analysis of the flow characteristics, most of the blood specific non-Newtonian fluid (Casson fluid) behavior was confirmed. Additionally, the blood from males has a higher apparent viscosity and Casson yield value than that from women.

Antiviral therapy against cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection is indicated for symptomatic infection in the fetus and premature neonates. In mature neonates, the benefit of antiviral therapy for severe CMV infection remains controversial. Additionally, when diagnosing symptomatic CMV disease occurring during the early neonatal period, it is difficult to differentiate between congenital and acquired infections.

[A Case of Extrahepatic Bile Duct Carcinoid Tumor Involving Diagnostic Difficulties].

A patient in his 60s had undergone laparoscopic anterior resection for the treatment of carcinoma of the rectum in February 2016. Histopathologic examination revealed the lesion as a pT2(MP)n(-)M0, fStage Ⅰrectal cancer. One year post-surgery, contrast-enhanced computed tomography(CT)revealed enhancement of parts of the intrapancreatic distal bile ducts.

Synthesis and Aromaticity of Benzene-Fused Doubly N-Confused Porphyrins.

The efficacy of a highly occlusive formulation for dry lips.

Objective: Since skin on the lips has a lower water content in the stratum corneum (SC) and a higher transepidermal water loss (TEWL) value than skin on the cheek, the lips are usually very dry and rough areas. Therefore, a lip balm approach to increase occlusivity of the lips is generally used to reduce water loss. Although there have been reports of an improvement effect on lip roughness by specific care agents, differences in the effects due to the occlusivity of a formulation without a specific care agent have not been reported.

[A Case of Small Bowel Perforation Caused by Malignant Lymphoma after Methotrexate Therapy for Rheumatoid Arthritis].

A 73-year-old woman had a history of medication, including methotrexate for rheumatoid arthritis, for 5 years. She had chronic epigastralgia for 2 weeks and found to have multiple submucosal tumors on upper gastrointestinal endoscopy in another hospital. She had a strong abdominal pain thereafter and diagnosed as having gastrointestinal perforation on the basis of CT scans.
