In this study, we review the initial impacts of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on the Canadian labour market. We focus on changes in employment and aggregate hours worked between February 2020 and April 2020 while accounting for normal monthly changes in these indicators. We find that COVID-19 induced a 32 percent decline in aggregate weekly work hours among workers aged 20-64 years, alongside a 15 percent decline in employment.

Article Synopsis
  • This study explores the link between business cycles and health in Canada, focusing on how fluctuations in the economy affect mortality rates.
  • Using provincial data from 1977 to 2009 and a fixed effects model, the research finds a procyclical relationship, confirming that higher unemployment correlates with lower mortality rates among middle-aged Canadians.
  • Unlike findings in the U.S., the study does not show a significant impact of economic cycles on mortality rates for infants and seniors.

The results indicate that employer-provided pensions have substantial and significant incentive effects on retirement behaviour. Having poor health substantially increases the likelihood of entering retirement, by up to 25 percentage points.
