Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to compare two techniques for scleral fixation of intraocular lenses (IOL): the double-flanged polypropylene method and the Hoffman scleral pocket method.
  • Involving 140 patients, the results showed that both techniques produced similar visual acuity outcomes, but the flange technique resulted in less myopic spherical equivalents and had a higher incidence of complications, such as elevated intraocular pressure and corneal edema.
  • The flange technique may be a viable option for scleral IOL fixation due to its shorter learning curve and comparable surgical time, despite having more complications associated with it.

Introduction: Coats disease is a rare vasculature pathology that usually presents as retinal telangiectasia with possible progression to exudative retinal detachment (RD). Intravitreal anti-VEGF injections, cryotherapy, laser photocoagulation, and surgery are commonly used to control the disease and prevent its progression. Although iatrogenic tractional RDs secondary to anti-VEGF injections have been reported in patients with Coats disease, RDs in Coats disease are exudative, secondary to retinal exudation and vascular abnormalities.

Objective: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has imposed measures of social distancing and barriers in delivery of "in person" education. Institutions, involved in training the next generation of ophthalmologists, are using alternative teaching methods to maintain the standard of education.

Methods: We conducted a worldwide survey among physicians, who are actively involved in Ophthalmology-related education, between 3 and 14 April 2020.

Purpose: To describe a surgical variant for scleral buckling technique using a chandelier and scleral releasable suture.

Methods: We collected retrospectively 20 eyes of 20 patients who underwent to scleral buckling for retinal detachment. In all cases, the surgeons performed the surgical variant of scleral buckling using a 27-gauge (G) chandelier as endoillumination and releasable 7.
