Environmental pollution due to the improper use of the chemical fungicides represents a vital ecological problem, which affects human and animal health, as well as the microbial biodiversity and abundance in the soil. In this study, an endophytic fungus Aspergillus oryzae YRA3, isolated from the wild plant Atractylis carduus (Forssk.) C.

The present study was conducted in order to describe the assemblage of wood decay fungi and mycomycetes associated with the Hail region in the North of Saudi Arabia by using incubation chambers. There was a collection of coarse woody debris from the study area, AL baithe, which was brought to the laboratory and placed inside a series of incubation chambers in which water was added. Over a period of several weeks, fruiting bodies appeared in these chambers which were morphologically analysed via AmScope stereomicroscope and molecular identification was carried out via ITS-1F and ITS-4R DNA sequencing methods.

Obesity, which is considered a pandemic due to its high prevalence, is a risk factor for many types of cancers, including lymphoma, through a variety of mechanisms by promoting an inflammatory state. Specifically, over the last few decades, obesity has been suggested not only to increase the risk of lymphoma but also to be associated with poor clinical outcomes and worse responses to different treatments for those diseases. Within the extensive range of proinflammatory mediators that adipose tissue releases, leptin has been demonstrated to be a key adipokine due to its pleotropic effects in many physiological systems and diseases.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), which affects about a quarter of the global population, poses a substantial health and economic burden in all countries, yet there is no approved pharmacotherapy to treat this entity, nor well-established strategies for its diagnosis. Its prevalence has been rapidly driven by increased physical inactivity, in addition to excessive calorie intake compared to energy expenditure, affecting both adults and children. The increase in the number of cases, together with the higher morbimortality that this disease entails with respect to the general population, makes NAFLD a serious public health problem.

Seven endophytic fungi were isolated from the tropical medicinal plant L. After preliminary screening, was selected for the epigenetic activation treatments. The antibacterial, antifungal, and antioxidant potentials of crude extracts obtained from the treatments (with and without epigenetic modifiers) were analyzed in vitro.

WHIM syndrome is a primary autosomal dominant immuno deficiency due to CXCR4 mutations characterized by mucocutaneous warts, hypogammaglobulinemia, recurrent bacterial infections and myelokathesis. Treatment consists in prophylactic antibiotics, immunoglobulin replacement and granulocyte or granulocyte/monocyte colony stimulating factors. We present the case of a 21 year old woman who showed leukopenia at 10 months of age and one year later multiple infections with hypogammaglobulinemia requiring intravenous immunoglobulin.

Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) data are measured via patient questionnaires, completed by the patients themselves at different time points. We focused on oncology data gathered through the use of European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer questionnaires, which decompose HRQoL into several functional dimensions, several symptomatic dimensions, and the global health status (GHS). We aimed to perform a global analysis of HRQoL and reduce the number of analyses required by using a two-step approach.

Vaginal swab samples were collected both from women with signs of acute vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC; n=270) and from healthy controls (n=100). The microscopic examination revealed a significant difference in the proportion of positive cultures of Candida between the VVC (33%) and control (21%) groups. To determine the frequency of different species, positive cultures were analyzed using the germ tube test, CHROMagar medium, API 20 AUX System and DNA analysis.

Aim: The authors performed a prospective study in a series of patients undergoing combined general and epidural anaesthesia for major abdominal surgery in order to define if the epidural catheter inserted for postoperative analgesia induced in the short-term (7-8 postoperative days) any cytopathologically appreciable inflammatory response.

Methods: From April to September 2001, 20 consecutive patients undergoing combined general and epidural anaesthesia for major abdominal surgery at the National Cancer Research Institute and Villa Scassi Hospital (Genoa), were recruited after obtaining Institutional Ethics Committee approval and written consent from the patients. The standard technique for epidural anaesthesia was adopted.

Ten patients receiving propofol for the induction and maintenance of anaesthesia were compared with 10 patients in whom anaesthesia was induced with thyopentone and maintained with fentanil. The cardiovascular response to anaesthesia, the effects on coagulation and fibrinolysis and the neuroendocrine response have been investigated during surgical procedures exceeding 90'. There was a larger decrease in PA after induction in the propofol group versus control, but the overall quality of anaesthesia during induction and maintenance was comparable in both groups.
